Debating the Bachelor Tax: Masculinity and the Politics of Taxation in Britain, 1894-1920.

'Bachelor tax' was a popular shorthand for controversial changes in government policy regarding income tax and marital status. From 1918, men were given tax allowances for a wife, and from 1920, all married and unmarried people had their incomes taxed on different terms for the first time. By examining the letters pages of national and local newspapers, alongside the reports and minutes of the Royal Commission on the Income Tax, this article argues that bachelors became contentious figures in this period, decried for their failure to marry and have children and pilloried as incomplete citizens

'Visible' compulsions: OCD and the politics of science in British clinical psychology, 1948-1975.

This article historicizes a single stage in how the contemporary obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) category was built. Starting from the position that the two central components which make up OCD are 'obsessions' and 'compulsions', it illustrates how these concepts were taken apart by a small group of clinical psychologists working at the Institute of Psychiatry and the Maudsley psychiatric hospital in south London in the early 1970s, and why compulsions were investigated whilst obsessions were ignored. The decision to distinguish the previously undifferentiated symptoms is attributed to the

The 2009 H1N1 pandemic, vaccine-associated narcolepsy, and the politics of risk and harm.

The article traces the emergence of a new type of vaccine injury-vaccine-associated narcolepsy-following immunization with Pandemrix vaccine during the 2009 H1N1 pandemic in Europe. The article highlights the processual nature of vaccine injury: it shows how vaccine-associated narcolepsy emerges gradually as a recognized object through epidemiological and immunological studies as well as patient organizations' public discourses. The article argues that despite public recognition of injury, vaccine-associated narcolepsy remains an incongruous object characterized by underlying tensions. These t

Queering the politics of lambda picture book finalists: challenging creeping neoliberalism through curricular innovations.

In many instances, adults serve as gatekeepers for what books children are permitted to explore. Unfortunately, this means that most children have limited access to picture books with lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) characters. In this article, we use queer pedagogy and observations about neoliberalism to provide a qualitative analysis of LGBTQ characters in picture books which were finalists for a Lambda Literary Award during 2000-2005. We examined the ways in which LGBTQ identities and relationships are negotiated and how sexual prejudice is treated. While it is improb

Bad blood: poverty, psychopathy and the politics of transgression in Kenya Colony, 1939-59.

This article examines the inter-relationship between psychiatry and sex, both fertile fields within the recent historiography of colonialism and empire. Using a series of case files pertaining to European patients admitted to the Mathari Mental Hospital in Nairobi during the 1940s and 1950s, this article shows how sexual transgression among colonial Europeans precipitated, and was combined with, mental distress. Considering psychiatric treatment as a form of social control, the article investigates a number of cases in which a European patient had been perceived to have transgressed the normat

Border harm and affective injustice: The politics of anger at the Melilla border, Spain.

This article examines protests in a detention center in Melilla, Spain-a site where structural violence intersects with the everyday harms of confinement. Adopting a justice and dignity-centered perspective, we analyze grassroots forms of resistance emerging at the border. The study focuses on the protests of Tunisian migrants and explores the role of emotions under specific conditions of oppression. Grounded in theories of affective injustice and in dialogue with community psychology scholarship on detention and resistance, we expose the emotional harms produced by confinement and the affecti

Rebranding the Nation: Migrant Fashion Production and the Contested Politics of 'Made in Italy'.

This article examines how Chinese migrant entrepreneurs in Prato engage with the contested meaning of the Made in Italy production label. As Chinese-run fashion firms have become central to Italy's fast fashion sector, their growing visibility has raised public concerns about authenticity, national identity, and the perceived erosion of cultural heritage. Drawing on 35 semi-structured interviews and ethnographic fieldwork, the study explores how commercial nationalism shapes both the marginalisation and the legitimisation of migrant-led production. It argues that the controversy surrounding Ma

Health evidence meets politics: informing the development and evaluation of electoral platforms in Lebanon.

BACKGROUND: Whilst significant efforts have been undertaken to strengthen the role of evidence in policymaking, there is still limited work aiming to strengthen the role of evidence in electoral platforms, which are provided to inform citizens' voting decisions in democratic systems. This study aims to develop a guide targeted at political parties and candidates to support them in developing and communicating electoral platforms that are action-oriented, evidence-based and responsive to people needs. It also aims to pilot test and apply an evaluation tool to understand how political platforms

From the ports to the hinterland. Plague, bacteriology, and politics in Argentina (1899-1940).

In 1899, the first cases of plague were recognised in Paraguay and a few months later in Buenos Aires as part of the third plague pandemic. In the first decades of the twentieth century, plague slowly advanced towards the Argentinian hinterland. In this paper we focus on the production of scientific knowledge about plague in Argentina, where a core of bacteriologists emerged early on. We show how they not only played a central role in the complex process of plague recognition and intervention, but also influenced the scientific development of bacteriology in Argentina and potentially in South

The origin story of rapamycin: systemic bias in biomedical research and cold war politics.

METEI (Medical Expedition to Easter Island) was a Canadian-led expedition to Easter Island in 1964 that led to the discovery of rapamycin, launching a billion-dollar drug industry and major field of biomedical research. Stanley's Dream, by medical historian Jacalyn Duffin, provides remarkable details about METEI and raises important and timely questions about systemic bias in biomedical studies, the relationship between science and geopolitics, as well as obligations of pharmaceutical companies to indigenous communities. As such, this book is a must-read for those interested in the intersectio…

Politics, Pushback, and Pandemics: Challenges to Public Health Orders in the 1918 Influenza Pandemic.

During the first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic in the United States, many state governors faced an increasing number of acts of defiance as well as political and legal challenges to their public health emergency orders. Less well studied are the similar acts of protest that occurred during the 1918-1919 influenza pandemic, when residents, business owners, clergy, and even local politicians grew increasingly restless by the ongoing public health measures, defied public health edicts, and agitated to have them rescinded. We explore several of the themes that emerged during the late fall of 1918

Queer Theory and Biomedical Practice: The Biomedicalization of Sexuality/The Cultural Politics of Biomedicine.

This article works across multiple disciplinary boundaries, especially queer theory, to examine critically the controversial, and often socially controlling, role of biomedical knowledge and interventions in the realm of human sexuality. It will attempt to situate scientific/medical discourses on sexuality historically, socially, and culturally in order to expose the ways in which "proper" sexual health in medical research and clinical practice has been conflated with prevailing social norms at particular historical junctures in the 20th and 21st centuries. How might the relationship between c

Evolution of postanesthesia care units: a legacy of politics, funding, and patient safety concerns.

Postanesthesia care units or PACUs (earlier called recovery rooms) flourished after World War II as social, political, and economic influences advanced enormous changes in health care expectations and delivery in the United States. Innovations in science and technology, facilitated by increased federal funding of scientific research in the years preceding and during the war, heralded a postwar need for greater complexity of hospital care safely delivered by trained personnel. PACUs began to open in new and modernized postwar hospitals as a means to safely provide more complex postoperative car

Between universal feminism and particular nationalism: politics, religion and gender (in)equality in Israel.

This article argues that one of the many "idiosyncrasies" of the Israeli case, namely Israel's continuing, violent conflict with its Arab neighbours, is of highly influential relevance to the issue of gender relations. Viewed by many Israeli Jews as a struggle for the very existence of the Jewish state, the Arab-Israeli conflict has overshadowed most other civil and social issues, rendering them "secondary" to the primary concern of securing the safe existence of the state. This has pushed such pressing issues as gender equality and women's rights aside, thus allowing for the perpetuation of d

[Cancer or syphilis laryngis, politics or diagnostic failure--problems of Emperor Frederick's III disease].

The case history of the German emperor Frederick III, who died of laryngeal cancer in 1888, is briefly reported. In spite of fact, that the German laryngologists the patient's pathologic changes diagnosed as laryngeal cancer in early stage, the ultimate diagnosis was made too late for surgery to have any effect. This delay was due to the differences in opinions between the attending laryngologists; particularly between that of the English prominent laryngologist Morell Mackenzie and the Germans, prof. Gerhardt and prof. Bergmann. The roles of the British Queen Victoria as well as her daughter,

Race and the politics of polio: Warm Springs, Tuskegee, and the March of Dimes.

The Tuskegee Institute opened a polio center in 1941, funded by the March of Dimes. The center's founding was the result of a new visibility of Black polio survivors and the growing political embarrassment around the policy of the Georgia Warm Springs polio rehabilitation center, which Franklin Roosevelt had founded in the 1920s before he became president and which had maintained a Whites-only policy of admission. This policy, reflecting the ubiquitous norm of race-segregated health facilities of the era, was also sustained by a persuasive scientific argument about polio itself: that Blacks we
