An improved method for high-temperature induced embryo sac chromosome doubling in Populus simonii Carr. × P. nigra var. italica (Moench.) Kochne, an interspecific hybrid of Tacamahaca and Aigeiros poplars.

Chromosome doubling is considered an important technique in poplar breeding, with many triploid clones being artificially induced and select … osome doubling in the embryo sac at a high temperature. The development of the embryo sac after the pollination of this hybrid was investigated to determine the induction period. Ploidy of seedlings was identified by flow cytometry after initial filtering using the chloroplast counting method. Eleven triploids and one tetraploid were ultimately obtained, and …

Trophic Niche Overlap in Stingless Bees (Melipona Illiger, 1806) Across Seasons in Southern Brazil.

Understanding how stingless bee species share floral resources is essential for optimizing meliponiculture and supporting pollinator conservation. This study investigated the trophic niche overlap of four Melipona species (M. quadrifasciata, M. bicolor, M. torrida, and M. mondury) in Southern Brazil across warm and cold seasons. Pollen samples were collected monthly over 10 months and analyzed to assess richness, trophic niche breadth, and overlap between species' trophic niches. Results showed seasonal variation in foraging patterns, with all species (except M. mondury) reducing their niche b

Comparing In Vivo and In Vitro Pollen Tube Attraction Assays for Arabidopsis and Maize.

Pollen tube attraction is a crucial step in the reproduction of angiosperms, ensuring that the male gametophytes, which carry two sperm cells, accurately target the compatible female gametophytes, or embryo sacs, in order to achieve double fertilization. Various experimental systems have been developed to study this process in vivo and in vitro, particularly in the model plant Arabidopsis thaliana (Arabidopsis). However, fewer methods have been described for other plant species, including grasses, which generate much thicker reproductive tissues and organs. Here, we present and compare optimiz

Effect of peak bloom timing on the transmission of the bumble bee pathogen Crithidia bombi (Trypanosomatida: Trypanosomatidae).

Pathogen spread is a major driver of wild and managed bee decline, with shared floral resources often serving as transmission hubs. However, the abundance of floral resources changes throughout the season, potentially altering bee visitation rate per flower. This could affect pathogen transmission by influencing both the likelihood of pathogen deposition on flowers and of new hosts encountering pathogens. We assessed the effect of peak bloom timing on transmission of a bumble bee (Bombus impatiens Cresson) (Hymenoptera: Apidae) pathogen (Crithidia bombi Lipa & Triggiani) in a 2-wk tent experim

Maintenance of andromonoecy in an autogamous species: Superior male function in male flowers of the endangered Sagittaria guayanensis.

Andromonoecy is a rare sexual system in plants. The function of additional male flowers in andromonoecious species has been widely discussed … hermaphroditic flowers. In addition, pollen production and export were higher in male flowers. Hand pollination demonstrated that siring ability did not differ between flower type. However, the natural siring success of male flowers was triple that of hermaphroditic flowers. The seeds sired by male flowers performed better than those sired by hermaphroditic f …

Introduced species shed friends as well as enemies.

Many studies seeking to understand the success of biological invasions focus on species' escape from negative interactions, such as damage from herbivores, pathogens, or predators in their introduced range (enemy release). However, much less work has been done to assess the possibility that introduced species might shed mutualists such as pollinators, seed dispersers, and mycorrhizae when they are transported to a new range. We ran a cross-continental field study and found that plants were being visited by 2.6 times more potential pollinators with 1.8 times greater richness in their native ran

The reproductive multiverse of diandrous orchids: two anthers offer new perspectives on the role of floral traits.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Floral trait influences on pollination performance have been extensively studied in monandrous orchids (one anther). Diandrous orchids (two anthers) introduce a new hierarchical level because removing two pollen smears requires at least two visits, potentially indicating more attractive flowers and greater opportunities for pollination performance via male function. We studied trait-performance relationships in diandrous orchids using a threatened hoverfly-pollinated Phragmipedium that mimics oviposition sites by resembling aphids. METHODS: We measured flower size and hei…

Prevalence of monogamy at the level of flowers in plants.

Different types of genomic conflicts are possible in plants with multiovulate ovaries that produce multiseeded fruits: between the maternal plant and its offspring, among developing seeds, between paternal and maternal genomes over seed development, and among paternal parents if different parents sire seeds within an ovary. We tested the hypothesis that such conflicts in multiseeded fruits can be reduced if seeds are sired by a single pollen parent. We conducted a meta-analysis of paternity in 63 species across diverse plant families to assess paternity within fruits. Our results reveal that a

Insect herbivores drive sex allocation in angiosperm flowers.

Why sex has evolved and is maintained is an open question in evolutionary biology. The Red Queen hypothesis predicts that host lineages subjected to more intense parasite pressure should invest more in sexual reproduction to continuously create novel defences against their rapidly evolving natural enemies. In this comparative study across the angiosperms, we show that hermaphrodite plant species associated with higher species richness of insect herbivores evolved flowers with higher biomass allocation towards the male sex, an indication of their greater outcrossing effort. This pattern remaine

Genetic potential for changes in breeding systems: Predicted and observed trait changes during artificial selection for male and female allocation in a gynodioecious species.

PREMISE: Evolution of separate sexes from hermaphroditism often proceeds through gynodioecy, but genetic constraints on this process are poo … ecy. Other biomass traits, pollen and ovule numbers, and inflorescence characters important in wind pollination evolved indirectly in response to selection on sex allocation. Responses generally followed predictions from multivariate selection models, with some responses unexpectedly large due to increased genetic correlations as selection proceeded. CONCLUS …

Floral nectary and osmophore of Epipactis helleborine (L.) Crantz (Orchidaceae).

The analysis of flowers collected at different stages of anthesis provides strong evidence to conclude that the shell-shaped hypochile and the knobs of epichile form a nectary. The scent comes from the aromatic constituents of nectar and the epichile tissue and the apices of all tepals (osmophores). The comparison between pollinated and unpollinated flowers revealed that the anthesis of unpollinated flowers lasted up to the 16th day. The nectariferous secretory cells formed single-layered epidermis and several layers of underlying parenchyma built by small, isodiametric cells with thin walls a

Foliar striping and floral traits are correlated with higher reproductive output in crimson monkeyflowers.

In plants, ecological interactions such as pollination depend on whole-plant phenotypes, where coordinated variation among vegetative, floral, and reproductive traits can shape reproductive success. However, empirical studies linking integrated phenotypes that include non-floral traits to reproductive outcomes within populations remain limited. While prior work has shown that crimson monkeyflowers exhibit heritable variation in foliar anthocyanin striping, the functional significance of the trait has been thus far unknown. Using plants derived from natural populations, we conducted field and g…

Hormesis without evolution: plastic compensatory responses to herbicide drift in Oxalis stricta, a common weed of agriculture.

Herbicide drift exposes nontarget plants to sublethal agrochemical doses, yet its ecological and evolutionary consequences remain poorly understood. Although hormesis - stimulatory responses to low doses of otherwise toxic compounds - has been documented following herbicide exposure, it has rarely been examined within an evolutionary ecology framework. Here, we examine herbicide-induced hormesis in the agricultural weed Oxalis stricta across two field experiments. We exposed replicated maternal lines to dicamba drift and quantified growth, reproductive traits, floral allocation, and pollinator

Toxicological assessment of cyfluthrin, atrazine, and prothioconazole: LD50 determination in European bumblebee, Bombus terrestris (Hymenoptera: Apidae).

Bumblebees are efficient pollinators of fruits and vegetables in greenhouses and field crops. However, pesticide use in agricultural landscapes is causing a sharp decline in pollinating insect populations. The impact of pesticides on bumblebee health is a growing concern. Cyfluthrin, atrazine, and prothioconazole are 3 commonly used pesticides in agricultural production. Although the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations has published the acute median lethal dose (LD50) data for these 3 pesticides on Apis mellifera honey bee, there is still a lack of LD50 data for non-Apis be

Bees modulate behavior during nectar foraging in response to direct ant aggression (Hymenoptera: Apidae and Formicidae).

Nectar thieves may seriously impact pollinator foraging behavior and, ultimately, pollination services in natural and agricultural contexts. Despite strong interest in pollinators and their services, there remain gaps in our knowledge as to how ants influence bee foraging decisions. Here, we characterized ant-bee interactions at shared resources and the subsequent behavioral sequences exhibited by bees. We found that two-thirds of bumble bee (Bombus impatiens Cresson) behaviors at nectar resources involved direct interactions with Argentine ants (Linepithema humile Mayr). Consistent with predi…

Ornithophily in the trumpet creeper (Campsis radicans).

The diversification of hummingbirds (Trochilidae) has shaped the pollination strategies and floral trait evolution in at least 68 families of flowering plants in the Western Hemisphere. The trumpet creeper (Bignoniaceae) is the quintessential example of ornithophily in eastern North America. The mutualistic relationship between this orange-flowered liana and the ruby-throated hummingbird (Archilochus colubris) was illustrated as early as 1731. However, neither historical nor modern accounts accurately describe the feeding behavior of ruby-throats at trumpet creeper flowers or the floral adapta…

Masting Breakdown in European Beech Reduces Fitness Benefits of Masting, Partly Explained by Climate Change.

Masting, highly synchronised but temporally variable seed production, is initiated by weather cues and is thus highly sensitive to climate change. Changes in these cues can lead to a masting breakdown, reducing the fitness benefits of masting through decreasing pollination efficiency and increasing predation risk for seeds. Here, we use 50 years of individual tree data on annual seed production of European beech (Fagus sylvatica) in the Netherlands to assess temporal changes in masting patterns and their consequences for the selective benefits of masting. Additionally, we use a novel approach …

Comparative transcriptomic analysis of loquat floral fragrance and hormone synthesis regulation across developmental stages in petals and stamens.

INTRODUCTION: Loquat Eriobotrya japonica is a native plant in China that blooms at low temperatures in early winter, and the floral fragrance volatiles from the petals and stamens of loquats' flowers are attractive to wild pollinators like Chinese honeybees. Thus, it was necessary to reveal the biosynthesis of floral fragrance and hormone regulation involved in the insect pollination of loquats' flowers. METHODS: Here, the volatile contents of petals and stamens were significantly higher than those of other parts of the loquat flower through the analysis of GC, and a key loquat flowers' compo…

Plant sexual reproduction is influenced by fire frequency: evidence from a resprouting herb in Chaco ecosystems.

Reduced competition and increased availability of abiotic resources shortly after a fire can favour growth and flowering of herbaceous species. These changes may also affect the pollinator community, reproductive success, and, potentially, the characteristics of progeny. However, anthropogenic increases in the frequency of fires could reverse the beneficial effects of fire. We evaluate the effect of fire frequency on sexual expression, pollination, female reproductive success, and early progeny vigour of Solanum palinacanthum, an andromonoecious resprouting herb in South American Chaco ecosyst…
