The COVID-19 pandemic focused attention on a pressing need for fast, accurate, and low-cost diagnostic tests. This work presents an electrochemical capillary driven immunoassay (eCaDI) developed to detect SARS-CoV-2 nucleocapsid (N) protein. The low-cost flow device is made of polyethylene terephthalate (PET) and adhesive films. Upon addition of a sample, reagents and washes are sequentially delivered to an integrated screen-printed carbon electrode for detection, thus automating a full sandwich immunoassay with a single end-user step. The modified electrodes are sensitive and selective for SA

A transparent and flexible piezoelectric nanogenerator (TF PNG) is demonstrated based on a GaN membrane fabricated by electrochemical lift-off. Under shear stress on the TF PNG by finger force (∼182 mN), the GaN membrane effectively undergoes normal stress and generates piezoelectric polarization along the c-axis, resulting in the generation of piezoelectric output from the TF PNG. Although the GaN layer is 315 times thinner than the flexible polyethylene terephthalate (PET) substrate, the low Young's modulus of PET allows the GaN membranes to absorb ∼41% of the applied strain energy, which le

Microplastics are ubiquitous environmental pollutants that increasingly infiltrate human organs and tissues through multiple exposure pathways. While acute toxicological impacts have been documented, the metabolic fate of these polymers within the enterohepatic circulation remains poorly understood. Bile serves as a critical excretory fluid, and disruptions in its balance can lead to biliary tract diseases such as gallstones. However, the long-term accumulation patterns and chronic toxic effects of microplastics within the human biliary system are largely unknown. Here we show the universal pr

This study investigated the relationship between microplastic (MP) presence and pollutant removal in granular sludge sequencing batch reactors (GSBRs). Two types of MPs, polyethylene (PE) and polyethylene terephthalate (PET), were introduced in varying concentrations to assess their effects on microbial community dynamics and rates of nitrogen, phosphorus, and organic compound removal. The study revealed type-dependent variations in the deposition of MPs within the biomass, with PET-MPs exhibiting a stronger affinity for accumulation in biomass. A 50 mg/L dose of PET-MP decreased COD removal e

The biodegradation of polyethylene terephthalate (PET), and its derived intermediate breakdown products, represents a core focus of multidisciplinary research. While Ideonella sakaiensis PETase (IsPETase) and leaf-compost cutinase (LCC) efficiently depolymerize PET, many other PET-active hydrolases display stronger activity toward soluble PET intermediates such as bis- and mono(2-hydroxyethyl) terephthalate (BHET and MHET). Here, we describe a versatile carboxylesterase derived from Bacillus halotolerans (BhEstB). BhEstB is structurally related to BsEstB from B. subtilis but divergent from can

Melt electrowriting (MEW) is a powerful additive manufacturing technique to produce tissue engineering scaffolds. Despite its strength, it is limited by a small number of processable polymers. Therefore, to broaden the library of materials for MEW, we investigated the printability of poly(ethylene oxide terephthalate)-poly(butylene terephthalate) (PEOT-PBT), a thermoplastic elastomer. The effect of different printing parameters and material thermal degradation are studied. It is observed that the material is stable for >60 min at a printing temperature of 195 °C in a nitrogen environment. Next

Polyethylene Terephthalate (PET) is an extensively used plastic whose durability and resistance to degradation contribute to growing environmental pollution and concerns. Enzymatic PET degradation, particularly via PETase from Ideonella sakaiensis, has emerged as a sustainable approach due to its ability to depolymerize PET under mild conditions. While research has largely focused on enhancing the enzyme's thermal stability through distal mutations, less attention has been given to active-site engineering aimed at directly improving catalytic efficiency. Here, we used an automated in silico pr

Mixed poly(ethylene terephthalate)/poly(butylene terephthalate) (PET/PBT) waste represents an increasing fraction of heterogeneous polyester streams with limited compatibility with mechanical recycling within municipal material recovery facilities. This study evaluates a continuous neutral-hydrolysis process for a nominal 70/30 PET/PBT feed using Aspen Plus simulation, techno-economic analysis, and cradle-to-gate life-cycle assessment (LCA). The framework integrates literature-based reaction kinetics with simulated separation, economic, and environmental inventories to assess the system-level

Improving the production of polyethylene terephthalate (PET) depolymerases is essential for reducing the cost of enzymatic PET recycling and facilitating its industrial application. To enhance the production of PET hydrolases, the fungal-derived hydrolase HiC and the bacterial-derived hydrolase LCCICCG were employed as model enzymes. Strategies including recombinant strain construction, gene copy number optimization, molecular chaperone-assisted expression, fermentation scale-up, and crude enzyme stabilization were systematically investigated. The strains with secretory expression were generat

Increasing spills in the environment with plastic nanoparticles causes unwanted contamination. A proof-of-concept study is presented in which mammalian cells are loaded with enzymes capable of degrading capsules, here poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) hydrolase. Loading into cells via endocytosis is achieved by polymeric encapsulation, which upon integration of poly(ethylenimine) also provides suitable local working conditions for the enzymes. In this way, the enzymatic activity of the PET hydrolase is also maintained in the acidic environment of endosomes/lysosomes. It is demonstrated that P

Mirror-image poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) plastic-degrading enzymes have emerged as promising biocatalytic platforms due to their exceptional enzymatic stability and low immunogenicity. Currently, the sole reported mirror-image plastic-degrading enzyme, the D-form of 231-residue PET hydrolase ICCG (engineered leaf-branch compost cutinase variant), suffers from thermophilic activity requirements, which limits its practical applications. Here, the first total chemical synthesis of a mirror-image 271-residue D-Fast-PETase was presented by using an enzyme-cleavable solubilizing tag strategy.

We present 2 elderly patients who developed necrotizing scleritis after cataract extraction in which the wound was sutured with polyester. In the first case, a 73-year-old woman who had right phacoemulsification via a limbal incision developed necrotizing scleritis 8 months after surgery. The eye became progressively painful and phthisical, necessitating enucleation. Microscopic examination of the enucleated globe showed a predominantly lymphocytic infiltration of the ocular tissues with no evidence of an infectious agent. In the second case, a 78-year-old woman had bilateral extracapsular cat

Results of 28 surgeries for congenital ptosis after Friedenwald-Guyton's method modified by V.L. Mikheyev are analyzed. A thick woven dacron thread was used for suturing. Good results were attained in 24 cases: the pupil area was covered with the upper lid by not more than 1/5. No effect was attained in 4 cases. Cases of ineffective surgeries are analyzed. A conclusion is made that the aforesaid surgery is simple, low traumatic, and sufficiently effective. Dacron thread may be effectively used for suturing.

Recent studies have highlighted the potential pathway of microplastic exposure through infusion therapy. However, the release of nanoplastics during this process remains poorly understood. Existing research on nanoplastics in infusion products predominantly relies on non-specific detection methods, which can significantly compromise the accurate judgment of nanoplastic types and concentrations. In this study, three brands of hospital-sourced infusion products were analyzed for nanoplastic release using surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) combined with dark-field microscopy. The environmental pollution caused by plastics and their chemical additives has drawn global attention. UV stabilizers are among the major plastic additives that were used to protect against discoloration and degradation under sunlight. They are recognized as harmful due to its persistence, bioaccumulation, adverse effects, and potential for long-range environmental transport via plastics. However, non-harmonized methodology to analysis UV stabilizers in plastics has brought remarkable challenge to compile data across studies and conduct further risk assessment. Especially, the extraction solv
