INTRODUCTION: Migraine and sleep share a complex and unclear relationship. Poor sleep may trigger migraine attacks; migraine, in turn, is frequently associated with sleep disorders. Few previous studies used questionnaires to assess sleep changes in patients who were treated with migraine-preventive medications (MPMs). More extensive polysomnography (PSG)-based studies for this purpose were not available.
OBJECTIVE: To investigate possible sleep changes in patients with migraine treated with erenumab, using validated sleep questionnaires and home-PSG.
METHODS: This observational, prospective…

STUDY OBJECTIVES: Hypoventilation associated with sleep-disordered breathing in inpatients is associated with higher risk of morbidity, hospitalizations, and death. In-hospital titration polysomnography qualifies patients for positive airway pressure (PAP) therapy and optimizes settings, but impact is unknown. This study describes a process for in-hospital sleep testing and evaluates subsequent PAP adherence and readmission.
METHODS: A retrospective cohort of patients with hypoventilation and in-hospital titration polysomnography with available PAP data were analyzed to determine whether PAP …

STUDY OBJECTIVES: The gold standard test for diagnosis of sleep related breathing disorders (SRBD) in children is diagnostic polysomnography (PSG). This is often followed by a titration PSG to identify optimal non-invasive ventilation (NIV) pressures. Access to pediatric PSG is limited, resulting in delays to diagnosis and initiation of treatment. Split-night PSGs (snPSG) combine a diagnostic and titration PSG into a single night study. Although described in adults, the pediatric literature on this topic is sparse. The objective of this study was to describe a large cohort of children who util…

Background: There is a need to better understand the association between sleep and chronic diseases. In this study we developed a natural language processing (NLP) algorithm to mine polysomnography (PSG) free-text notes from electronic medical records (EMR) and evaluated the performance. Methods: Using the Veterans Health Administration EMR, we identified 46,093 PSG studies using CPT code 95,810 from 1 October 2000−30 September 2019. We randomly selected 200 notes to compare the accuracy of the NLP algorithm in mining sleep parameters including total sleep time (TST), sleep efficiency (SE) and…

In this study, we collected and analyzed polysomnography (PSG) data to investigate the value of PSG in diagnosing sleep problems in children. The results of PSG studies of children (<18 years old) with sleep problems conducted from April 2015 to May 2017 at a children's hospital in Taiwan were collected and analyzed retrospectively. Data for 310 patients (209 males and 101 females) who underwent PSG were collected. The final diagnoses were as follows: obstructive sleep apnea in 159 (51.3%), snoring in 81 (26.4%), limb movement sleep disorder in 25 (8.1%), hypersomnias in 12 (3.9%), central apn…

BACKGROUND: Sleep problems are commonly associated with the primary diagnostic criteria for many psychiatric disorders. Evidence suggests sleep disturbances may precede development of psychiatric disorders and the severity of psychopathology reflects the severity of sleep problems. Polysomnography (PSG) sleep studies in child and adolescent psychiatric populations, a particularly at risk group, has considerable value but has been more elusive requiring further investigation.
METHODS: We performed a retrospective chart review of PSG sleep studies and psychiatrist evaluations of 106 adolescents…

BACKGROUND: In patients with sleep apnoea early diagnostic evaluation and treatment may be delayed due to limited access to full polysomnography (PSG). For "typical" patients, simplified strategies are needed. A study was performed to evaluate the accuracy of a new continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) device with in-built diagnostic abilities (Autoset) in detecting apnoeas.
METHODS: Twenty seven patients underwent full overnight polysomnography. Data with the Autoset were acquired simultaneously. Standard nasal prongs were used. Apnoeas were detected by special analysis of the flow sign…

BACKGROUND: The diagnosis of narcolepsy is based on clinical information, combined with polysomnography (PSG) and the Multiple Sleep Latency Test (MSLT). PSG and the MSLT are moderately reliable at diagnosing narcolepsy type 1 (NT1) but unreliable for diagnosing narcolepsy type 2 (NT2). This is a problem, especially given the increased risk of a false-positive MSLT in the context of circadian misalignment or sleep deprivation, both of which commonly occur in the general population.
AIM: We aimed to clarify the accuracy of PSG/MSLT testing in diagnosing NT1 versus controls without sleep disord…

Although recent studies have examined the bidirectional associations between physical activity and sleep parameters, few have focused on older adults utilizing objective assessments, such as polysomnography. This micro-longitudinal observational study included 92 Japanese older adults (aged 65-86 years) who underwent objective evaluations of sleep quality using polysomnography and completed subjective sleep-related questionnaires. Activity levels were assessed using an accelerometer. Polysomnography, subjective sleep-related questionnaires, and accelerometer were administered for 7 consecutive…

PURPOSE: Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a collapse of pharynx muscles during sleep that can cause obstruction in the upper airway. It is better to determine the site and pattern of obstruction in the upper airway with drug-induced sleep endoscopy (DISE) before surgery. OSA usually occurs in a non-rapid eye movement (NREM) sleep and sometimes it gets longer and more intense in REM; hence, the study is meant to explore whether the sleep stage and results in DISE may have any similarity with usual nocturnal polysomnography or not.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this study, 38 patients with OSA diag…

OBJECTIVE: It is a matter of debate whether patients with primary insomnia require a polysomnographic examination in order to exclude specific sleep disorders such as sleep apnea syndrome (SAS) or periodic limb movements (PLM). Using a prospective design, we investigated the prevalence of organic sleep disorders by means of polysomnography (PSG) in a series of patients who were previously diagnosed with primary insomnia. This diagnosis was based on a clinical exam and an ambulatory monitoring device or previous PSG.
METHODS: Seventy-seven women and 16 men (mean age 55.12 ± 13.21 years) who we…

Video-polysomnography (VPSG) is indicated for cases of nocturnal motor behaviors, particularly rapid eye movement (REM) sleep behavior disorder (RBD), and different sleep complaints in the context of neurological disease, particularly neurodegenerative disease. In a location with limited VPSG availability, referral and poststudy diagnoses were reviewed to help create flow protocols for sleep centers in economically-disadvantaged areas. A total of 115 VPSG studies conducted at a public university-affiliated hospital in Porto Alegre, Southern Brazil, were divided into groups related to sleep com…
