Using scenario planning to evaluate the impacts of climate change on wildlife populations and communities in the Florida Everglades.

It is uncertain how climate change will impact hydrologic drivers of wildlife population dynamics in freshwater wetlands of the Florida Everglades, or how to accommodate this uncertainty in restoration decisions. Using projections of climate scenarios for the year 2060, we evaluated how several possible futures could affect wildlife populations (wading birds, fish, alligators, native apple snails, amphibians, threatened and invasive species) across the Everglades landscape and inform planning already underway. We used data collected from prior research and monitoring to parameterize our wildli

Factorization of air pollutant emissions: projections versus observed trends in Europe.

This paper revisits the emission scenarios of the European Commission's 2005 Thematic Strategy on Air Pollution (TSAP) in light of today's knowledge. We review assumptions made in the past on the main drivers of emission changes, i.e., demographic trends, economic growth, changes in the energy intensity of GDP, fuel-switching, and application of dedicated emission control measures. Our analysis shows that for most of these drivers, actual trends have not matched initial expectations. Observed ammonia and sulfur emissions in European Union in 2010 were 10% to 20% lower than projected, while emi

A genetic algorithm based stochastic programming model for air quality management.

This paper presents a model that can aid planners in defining the total allowable pollutant discharge in the planning region, accounting for the dynamic and stochastic character of meteorological conditions. This is accomplished by integrating Monte Carlo simulation and using genetic algorithm to solve the model. The model is demonstrated by using a realistic air urban-scale SO2 control problem in the Yuxi City of China. To evaluate effectiveness of the model, results of the approach are shown to compare with those of the linear deterministic procedures. This paper also provides a valuable ins

Changes in the living arrangements of older women: an international study.

This study analyzes trends in the percentage of older women living alone in 21 European and North American countries over the period of 1960-1992. The general pattern is one of substantial annual increases in the percentage of elderly women living alone. This trend is shown to result mainly from demographic changes, with little evidence of a role for economic variables. The analysis suggests a reversal of the current trend in coming years, as mothers of postwar baby booms reach old age.

Poliomyelitis in Delhi: a projection on pool of at-risk under five during 1995.

Due to lacunae in coverage and limitation in efficacy, immunization with oral polio vaccine has left a group of susceptible children at risk of developing poliomyelitis. The present study, with the help of statistics, projects the size of that susceptible pool of underfive children in Delhi during 1995. With the help of available data and some assumption, a formula has been developed for the purpose. The size of the pool thus estimated is about 3.7 lakh. There is a need to develop methodology for finding such susceptibles at community level, particularly at the terminal phase of eradication. A

Worldwide status of poliomyelitis in 1986, 1987 and 1988, and plans for its global eradication by the year 2000.

In 1986, a total of 28,951 cases of poliomyelitis were reported to WHO by 175 countries/areas. For 1987, 35,685 cases were reported by 168 countries/areas. Reporting is incomplete for 1988, based on data available as of December 1989. Trends in regional incidence rates for poliomyelitis over a 15-year period from 1974 to 1988 suggest a decline in the incidence of the disease, especially since 1982. However, the reported data underreport actual disease incidence. During 1986, 1987 and 1988, the Expanded Programme on Immunization (EPI) estimates that 200,000-250,000 cases of paralytic poliomyeli

Development and Validation of Prediction Models for Perceived and Unmet Mental Health Needs in the Canadian General Population: Model-Based Synthetic Estimation Study.

BACKGROUND: Research has shown that perceptions of a mental health need are closely associated with service demands and are an important dimension in needs assessment. Perceived and unmet mental health needs are important factors in the decision-making process regarding mental health services planning and resources allocation. However, few prediction tools are available to be used by policy and decision makers to forecast perceived and unmet mental health needs at the population level. OBJECTIVE: We aim to develop prediction models to forecast perceived and unmet mental health needs at the pr

Predictive analysis of plankton population dynamics in marine biosphere: a nonlinear ARX neural network for the carbon-thermal-nutrient-plankton asymmetric multifactor system for global warming.

Plankton dynamics lie at the core of biogeochemical cycles and ecosystem function, which makes dependable prediction essential. Neural network-based approximations show strong potential in capturing these nonlinear interactions due to their flexibility and efficiency. In this study, a dynamic nonlinear autoregressive exogenous neural network trained with the Levenberg-Marquardt algorithm (ARX-LMA) is exploited on the nonlinear carbon thermal nutrient-plankton autonomous dynamics (NCTNP-AD) system for plankton population in the marine biosphere influenced by the impact of global warming and cli

Predicting prostate cancer mortality using UK Biobank data: a multimodal machine learning approach.

Prostate cancer remains a major cause of cancer-related mortality among men worldwide; however, it remains challenging to predict disease progression in individuals. While numerous tools attempt to forecast the likelihood of developing the cancer, fewer studies focus specifically on mortality prediction using population-scale clinical datasets. UK Biobank data were used to develop population-scale predictive models of prostate cancer mortality. The study assessed medical records, blood work, physical measurements, and genetic information of approximately 167 000 males aged 50 and above. A feed

Predictive evolutionary modelling for influenza virus by site-based dynamics of mutations.

Influenza virus continuously evolves to escape human adaptive immunity and generates seasonal epidemics. Therefore, influenza vaccine strains need to be updated annually for the upcoming flu season to ensure vaccine effectiveness. We develop a computational approach, beth-1, to forecast virus evolution and select representative virus for influenza vaccine. The method involves modelling site-wise mutation fitness. Informed by virus genome and population sero-positivity, we calibrate transition time of mutations and project the fitness landscape to future time, based on which beth-1 selects the

Global burden of ischemic heart disease in older adult populations linked to non-optimal temperatures: past (1990-2021) and future (2022-2050) analysis.

BACKGROUND: Ischemic heart disease (IHD) is a leading cause of death and disability, particularly affecting the older adult population. Extreme temperatures, especially very low and very high temperatures, are known to exacerbate cardiovascular disease burden. With the ongoing global climate change, understanding the impact of non-optimal temperatures on IHD burden becomes increasingly important, especially in vulnerable populations such as the older adult. METHODS: This study used data from the Global Burden of Disease Study 2021 (GBD 2021) to analyze the spatiotemporal trends of low and hig

Global, regional, and national burden of HIV/AIDS, 1990-2021, and forecasts to 2050, for 204 countries and territories: the Global Burden of Disease Study 2021.

BACKGROUND: As set out in Sustainable Development Goal 3.3, the target date for ending the HIV epidemic as a public health threat is 2030. Therefore, there is a crucial need to evaluate current epidemiological trends and monitor global progress towards HIV incidence and mortality reduction goals. In this analysis, we assess the current burden of HIV in 204 countries and territories and forecast HIV incidence, prevalence, and mortality up to 2050 to allow countries to plan for a sustained response with an increasing number of people living with HIV globally. METHODS: We used the Global Burden

Global, regional, and national burden of rheumatoid arthritis, 1990-2020, and projections to 2050: a systematic analysis of the Global Burden of Disease Study 2021.

BACKGROUND: Rheumatoid arthritis is a chronic autoimmune inflammatory disease associated with disability and premature death. Up-to-date estimates of the burden of rheumatoid arthritis are required for health-care planning, resource allocation, and prevention. As part of the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study (GBD) 2021, we provide updated estimates of the prevalence of rheumatoid arthritis and its associated deaths and disability-adjusted life-years (DALYs) by age, sex, year, and location, with forecasted prevalence to 2050. METHODS: Rheumatoid arthritis prevalence w

Hospitalizations and inpatient resource consumption of patients suffering from chronic disease - Past trend and forecast for Switzerland.

BACKGROUND: Chronic diseases are an increasing burden for Swiss healthcare. Demographic change aggravates the problem, with an ageing, multi … stay, and inpatient healthcare expenditures, based on diagnosis-related group payments. We utilized population forecasts for Switzerland to extrapolate PAH-volume in the base scenario. Additionally, we predicted via linear regression how reduced ageing-induced PCP-availability might affect PAHs. Finally, we explored the potential impact of countermeasures, optimal Gu …

Long-term impact of COVID-19-related nonpharmaceutical interventions on tuberculosis: an interrupted time series analysis using Bayesian method.

BACKGROUND: The implementation of non-pharmaceutical interventions (NPIs) during the COVID-19 pandemic may inadvertently influence the epidemiology of tuberculosis (TB). (TB). However, few studies have explored how NPIs impact the long-term epidemiological trends of TB. We aimed to estimate the impact of NPIs implemented against COVID-19 on the medium- and long-term TB epidemics and to forecast the epidemiological trend of TB in Henan. METHODS: We first collected monthly TB case data from January 2013 to September 2022, after which we used the data from January 2013 to December 2021 as a trai
