An isolated rupture of the posterior capsule that is caused by a blunt ocular trauma has been rarely reported and is usually detected incidentally during surgery for a complicated cataract. We found an isolated posterior capsule rupture on the third day after trauma in a 25-year-old man who was admitted for the treatment of traumatic hyphema and we performed a phacoemusification and anterior vitrectomy with PC-IOL, implantation because of the traumatic cataract which had progressed after the injury. The PC-IOL was implanted safely into the capsular bag without severe enlargement of the posteri

Apoptosis has been implied in normal lens development in the embryo as well as in lens fibre differentiation. It has also been suggested to play a role in non-congenital cataract and in the formation of posterior subcapsular opacification, but data on the presence of apoptosis in human lens epithelium from cataractous lenses are scarce and conflicting. The present study aimed to investigate apoptosis in lens epithelium from patients undergoing cataract surgery. The amount of apoptosis detected was correlated to age, gender, type of cataract, medications and disease. Moreover, the ability of hu

AIM: To compare surgical peeling and aspiration and neodymium yttrium garnet laser capsulotomy for pearl form of posterior capsule opacifica … nal detachment whereas recurrence of pearls may occur after successful peeling and aspiration. When posterior capsulotomy is needed in patients with retinal degenerations, retinopathies and pre-existing retinal breaks, the clinician should be cautious about increased risks of possible complications of Nd:YAG laser capsulotomy.

UNLABELLED: Management of the posterior capsule significantly affects the outcome of pediatric cataract surgery. Posterior capsule opacification (PCO) is rapid and virtually inevitable in very young children when adult-style cataract surgery is performed and the posterior capsule is left intact. In eyes with pediatric cataract, primary posterior capsulotomy and vitrectomy are considered routine surgical steps, especially in younger children. The site of intraocular lens (IOL) fixation and the surgical technique used also affect the prevalence of PCO. The present systematic review evaluates the…

INTRODUCTION: Posterior capsular opacification (PCO) is the most common complication of cataract surgery. In this study, we develop a model to quantitatively predict the probability of Nd:YAG laser capsulotomy for vision-threatening PCO to improve the life quality of postoperative patients.
METHODS: A registry analysis of cataract procedures performed between the years 2010 and 2021. Following the screening of 16,802 patients (25,883 eyes), 9768 patients (eyes) were enrolled. The cohort was randomly divided into two groups: training (n = 6838) and validation (n = 2930). To identify relevant r

PURPOSE: To compare posterior capsule opacification (PCO) after cataract surgery with implantation of two silicone intraocular lenses (IOLs) with different designs.
METHODS: We carried out a prospective, clinical study of 116 patients randomized to standardized phacoemulsification with implantation of CeeOn Edge (n = 57) or SI40NB (n = 59) IOLs. The follow-up period was 3 years. To evaluate PCO morphologically, digital images were obtained and analysed using evaluation of posterior capsule opacification computer software (epco). The neodymium:YAG (Nd:YAG) capsulotomy rate was recorded.

The authors studied the characteristics of 376 eyes of 361 patients with primary retinal detachment (RD) and surgical aphakia (103 eyes) or pseudophakia (273 eyes). Of the pseudophakic eyes, 17 had an iris-fixated intraocular lens (IOL), 111 had an anterior chamber (AC) IOL, and 145 had a posterior chamber (PC) IOL. Of the PC IOL cases, 48 (33%) had undergone YAG capsulotomy, and 46% of them developed RD within 6 months after capsulotomy. The frequency of no breaks found in pseudophakic RD (15%) was significantly higher than in RD with simple aphakia (5%). The most frequent reasons were incomp

The Nd:YAG laser is used primarily in the management of posterior capsular opacification in patients who have had extracapsular cataract extraction. Despite wide clinical use little is known about its damaging effects on the ocular tissues particularly on the corneal endothelium. To evaluate the pathologic changes caused by high powered Nd:YAG laser pulses on the anterior segment of the eye we focused the beam of this laser on the anterior lens capsule in rabbit eyes. Six eyes underwent anterior capsulotomy and three power settings were used (3.4 mJ, 5.8 mJ, 8.6 mJ). The fellow eyes served as

Intra-articular migration of an epiphysiodesis staple is an unreported complication in the literature. We report the case of a 16-year-old boy who presented with a loose distal femoral epiphysiodesis staple migrated into the posterior compartment of the knee joint. During arthroscopy, a posteromedial capsulotomy and a posterolateral portal were used and the staple was removed. This case highlights the potential complication of staple intra-articular migration and the arthroscopic approach to removal.

A case of spontaneous absorption of a cataractous lens is presented. A 37-year-old woman with Down's syndrome presented with bilateral cataracts. On follow-up, the cataract in her right eye was found to be absorbed with no secondary uveitis or glaucoma. Surgical capsulotomy was performed on the remnant anterior and posterior capsules. Such absorption is known in juveniles and in hypermature cataract, but is rare in adults in the absence of injury or inflammation. Absorption occurred over a period of one year.
