The effect of potassium dichromate (K(2)Cr(2)O(7)), a hexavalent chromium compound, on human erythrocytes was studied under in vitro conditions. Incubation of erythrocytes with different concentrations of K(2)Cr(2)O(7) resulted in marked hemolysis in a concentration-dependent manner. The objectives of the present work are to determine the prevalence and risk factors of occurrence of occupational dermatoses among workers in a porcelain manufacturing factory. The study included 235 workers (132 males and 103 females). After history taking, dermatological examination was performed at the work place. In 1979, the inhabitants of a geographically defined area were examined for skin disorders of the hands and forearms. In 1982 this cohort was invited for re-examination.
