The Sinus That Breeds Fungus: Subcutaneous Zygomycosis Caused by Basidiobolus ranarum at the Injection Site.

Subcutaneous zygomycosis is caused by Basidiobolus ranarum which is endemic in India. We report a case of a housewife who presented with a persistent discharging sinus from the right gluteal region subsequent to an intramuscular injection which was refractory to empirical antituberculous therapy. She underwent an excision of the sinus tract, the culture of which yielded B. ranarum. The wound improved with oral potassium iodide.

Occurrence of subcutaneous zygomycosis (entomophthoromycosis basidiobolae) caused by Basidiobolus haptosporus with pulmonary involvement.

A case of a two-year-old boy with multiple subcutaneous lesions caused by Basidiobolus haptosporus is presented. The child had also a non-toxic familial goiter and clinical and radiological features of a pulmonary illness. The pulmonary manifestations only disappeared with the treatment with potassium iodide. The authors think that the pulmonary lesions must have arisen by direct spread of the fungus from the subcutaneous lesions of the chest.

Facial sporotrichosis in an infant.

Sporotrichosis is usually considered a fungal infection affecting adults, but it can also affect children. A case of sporotrichosis in an 18-month-old boy is presented which is unusual in that the patient was extremely young and had a relatively atypical clinical presentation. His condition responded rapidly to potassium iodide therapy at a very low dosage. A brief review of childhood sporotrichosis in the American literature is included.

A case of neutrophilic dermatosis with MEFV gene variant and abnormal activation of peripheral blood monocytes: a case report.

A healthy 32-year-old man had a fever and elevated levels of white blood cells (WBC) and C-reactive protein (CRP). In addition, he presented … of CD86+CD14+CD16- classical monocytes in the peripheral blood using flow cytometry. We added oral potassium iodide as a treatment for neutrophil dermatosis. Despite this treatment, his eruption and fever did not subside, therefore, we changed potassium iodide to colchicine, this improved his clinical condition. This case suggests the importance of autoinflammati …

Lymphangitic sporotrichosis: an uncommon bilateral localization.

Sporotrichosis is a mycotic disease caused by cutaneous inoculation of the dimorphic fungus Sporothrix schenckii. The primary lesion can spread and often develop a unilateral lymphocutaneous lesions or, rarely, disseminated disease. We report a lymphangitic sporotrichosis case with ulcerated erythematous nodules distributed bilaterally on the posterior and medical aspect of the both legs, probably due to multiple inoculations. The treatment with oral potassium iodide was satisfactory.

The effect of iodide on serum thyroid hormone levels in normal persons, in hyperthyroid patients, and in hypothyroid patients on thyroxine replacement.

OBJECTIVE: To clarify the duration and the extent of the antithyroid effect of iodides in hyperthyroidism, and to investigate whether iodides have an additional peripheral effect on the metabolism of thyroid hormones, as has been reported for some organic iodine compounds. DESIGN: The effect on the peripheral thyroid hormone levels of 150 mg of potassium iodide daily (equivalent to 114 mg of iodide) for 3-7 weeks was compared in 21 hyperthyroid patients and 12 healthy controls. A possible effect of iodide on the peripheral metabolism of thyroid hormones was investigated by assessing the serum…

Comparison of antibacterial efficacy of intracanal medicaments in multiple visit pulpectomies in primary molars-an in vivo study.

Antibacterial efficacy of formocresol, 2% gluteraldehyde and iodine-potassium iodide was assessed by obtaining cultures at consecutive appointments in multiple visit pulpectomies in primary molars. Formocresol and 2% gluteraldehyde were more effective as intracanal medicaments and caused significant reduction in the counts of aerobic and anaerobic microorganisms, thereby supporting the need for placing intracanal medicaments with antibacterial properties, in multiple visit pulpectomies in primary molars.

Unlocking Long-Term Stability of Upconversion Nanoparticles with Biocompatible Phosphonate-Based Polymer Coatings.

Achieving long-term (>3 months) colloidal stability of upconversion nanoparticles (UCNPs) in biologically relevant buffers has been a major challenge, which has severely limited practical implementation of UCNPs in bioimaging and nanomedicine applications. To address this challenge, nine unique copolymers formulations were prepared and evaluated as UCNP overcoatings. These polymers consisted of a poly(isobutylene-alt-maleic anhydride) (PIMA) backbone functionalized with different ratios and types of phosphonate anchoring groups and poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) moieties. The syntheses were done

Lymphocutaneous sporotrichosis.

Lymphocutaneous sporotrichosis presented in a 10 year old child 1-2 weeks after an abrasion. A series of nodules, two of which ulcerated, appeared along the arm with tender unilateral axillary lymphadenopathy in the absence of systemic symptoms. Biopsy showed a granulomatous infiltrate but failed to reveal the organism; however, culture was positive for Sporothrix schenckii. The primary lesion healed with a scar after 3 months of systemic therapy with potassium iodide.

Congenital goiter and the development of metastatic follicular carcinoma with evidence for a leak of nonhormonal iodide: clinical, pathological, kinetic, and biochemical studies and a review of the literature.

We report a large kindred of patients with congenital goiter, followed for 15 yr, in which two siblings (one male and one female) developed metastatic follicular thyroid carcinoma. These two patients were evaluated by iodine kinetic analysis. None of the classical defects of T4 biosynthesis was present in either patient. Rather, both patients had extremely rapid rates of iodine turnover, with elevated 131I uptake and excessive spillage of iodide in the urine. Serum iodoalbumin was present, probably as a nonspecific result of glandular hyperplasia. Iodine kinetic analysis after the ingestion of

The toxic effect of small iodine supplements in patients with autonomous thyroid nodules.

In sixteen cases of toxic adenoma of the thyroid (autonomous hot nodule with complete suppression of the surrounding normal parenchyma) potassium iodide was given in doses of 100 microgram/day for one week, 200 microgram/day for another and 400 microgram/day for a third week. There was a progressive increase in the serum T4 level. Serum T3 also increased, although this was significant only after the first week. Serum TSH was undetectable throughout the entire period of the study. This metabolic pattern is different from the response seen in cases of nontoxic endemic goitre, where small iodine …

Efficacy of acute phase and maintenance therapy with itraconazole in an AIDS patient with sporotrichosis.

An AIDS patient with sporotrichosis who improved with itraconazole therapy after consecutive failure of ketoconazole, saturated solution of potassium iodide, fluconazole and amphotericin B is presented. In addition, long-term therapy with high doses of itraconazole was well tolerated and effective in avoiding relapse. Itraconazole may be suitable for use in HIV-infected patients with sporotrichosis, who probably require chronic suppressive therapy to prevent relapse of symptomatic disease.

Nasofacial conidiobolomycosis.

A case of Nasofacial Zygomycosis in a 15-year-old male patient from South India is reported. This patient had typical thickening of the nasofacial mucosa and the skin overlying it. The diagnosis was confirmed with fungal cultures. Although initially good response to treatment with potassium iodide was achieved, later the response was unsatisfactory, probably partly due to irregularity in treatment. Treatment with sulphamethoxazole--trimethoprim and prednisolone combination has resulted in remarkable improvement.

Fetal Goitrous Hyperthyroidism in a Pregnant Woman with Triiodothyronine-Predominant Graves' Disease.

Triiodothyronine (T3)-predominant Graves' disease is characterized by increased serum free T3 (FT3) levels after free thyroxine (FT4) levels become normal or even low during antithyroid drug treatment. We encountered a 34-year-old pregnant woman, gravida 5 para 4, who was complicated by T3-predominant Graves' disease. She was diagnosed with Graves' disease at 20 years old, and had received methimazole. Methimazole was changed to potassium iodide to reduce the risk of congenital anomalies during the first trimester. The dose of antithyroid drugs was adjusted based on maternal FT4 levels, so tha…

Entomophthoromycosis in a child: Delayed diagnosis and extensive involvement.

Entomophthoromycosis is a rare fungal infection of the skin and subcutaneous tissue occurring predominantly in tropical and subtropical regions. In children, it mostly affects the lower half of the body. With this, we report a case of Entomophthoromycosis in a 6-year-old girl who presented late with extensive involvement of the upper half of the body. She responded well to treatment with potassium iodide and itraconazole. We also reviewed cases of Entomophthoromycosis reported in children.

Sporotrichosis in Manipur: report of two cases.

Two cases of lymphocutaneous sporotrichosis are reported from Imphal. Sporothrix schenekii was isolated from pus from the lesion and identity was confirmed by mycelial to yeast conversion at 37 degrees C and mice pathogenicity test. One patient gave history of injury with bone of fermented fish (Ngari). Both the patients were treated successfully with oral administration of potassium iodide. These two cases are the first authentic cases of sporotrichosis from Manipur.
