Dicentric and translocation analysis for retrospective dose estimation in humans exposed to ionising radiation during the Chernobyl nuclear power plant accident.

Chromosome analyses were carried out in peripheral blood lymphocytes obtained between September 1991 and March 1992 from 15 persons exposed to ionising radiation during the Chernobyl nuclear power plant accident. At present, all are being treated for symptoms of the delayed stage of the cutaneous radiation syndrome. Biological dose-equivalent estimates were determined, either by measuring the frequency of dicentric and ring chromosomes in first division unstable cells from conventional preparations (Qdr method), or by measuring the frequency of stable translocations using two-colour fluorescen

Cellular effects induced by insoluble radioactive cesium-bearing microparticles derived from the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant accident.

PURPOSE: Radioactive cesium-bearing microparticles (CsMPs) were generated by the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant (FNPP) accident. Despite their low radioactivity, CsMPs are insoluble and their dose distribution to the surrounding tissues is non-uniform, raising concerns about their biological effects. In this study, we investigated the cellular effects of CsMPs collected from soil contaminated by the FNPP accident. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Each three CsMP was placed on immortalized normal human epithelial cells (hTERT-RPE1) and co-incubated for up to 72 h. Induction of DNA double-strand b

Association of GSTM1 and GSTT1 Copy Number Variation with Chromosomal Aberrations in Nuclear Power Plant Workers Exposed to Occupational Ionizing Radiation.

Exposure to low-dose ionizing radiation in occupational settings raises concerns about chromosomal aberrations (CAs) and their potential impact on genomic stability. Copy number variations (CNVs), structural genomic changes, influence susceptibility to environmental stressors and radiation-induced damage. This study analyzed CAs in 180 nuclear power plant workers exposed to occupational radiation and 45 controls, stratified by GSTM1 and GSTT1 CNVs. Workers exhibited significantly higher frequencies of chromatid-type and chromosome-type aberrations, of 5.47 and 3.01 per 500 cells, respectively,

Simultaneous oxidation of NO, CO, and CH4 from exhaust gas in LNG combined cycle power plant over MnCuCeOx/Al2O3 catalyst.

Nitrogen oxides (NOx), carbon monoxide (CO), and methane (CH4) are co-emitted at the start-up of LNG combined-cycle power plants. Simultaneous oxidation using mixed metal oxide catalysts is applied to remove these pollutants. Mn, Cu, Ce, MnCu, MnCe, and MnCuCe oxides supported on Al2O3 catalysts were prepared, and their catalytic activities were investigated. Among them, the MnCuCe/Al2O3 catalyst exhibited the highest conversions: 38% for NO at 250 °C, 95% for CO at 200 °C, and 35% for CH4 at 500 °C. These superior catalytic performances were attributed to its amorphous structure, strong elect…

A municipality-specific analysis to investigate persistent increased incidence rates of childhood leukaemia near the nuclear power plant of Krümmel in Germany.

Increased incidence rates for childhood leukaemia have been reported in municipalities close to the nuclear power plant (NPP) Krümmel (Geesthacht, Germany). Methodological challenges arise when analysing this association at ecological level. They include the use of an appropriate reference population, unstable estimates of standardised incidence ratios (SIRs), and the potential role of prevailing winds. The aim of our study is to address these challenges. The German Childhood Cancer Registry provided data on leukaemia in children under 15 years (2004-2019). The German Federal Statistical Offic

Reduction of atmospheric emissions due to switching from fuel oil to natural gas at a power plant in a critical area in Central Mexico.

A case study was conducted to evaluate the SO2 emission reduction in a power plant in Central Mexico, as a result of the shifting of fuel oil to natural gas. Emissions of criteria pollutants, greenhouse gases, organic and inorganic toxics were estimated based on a 2010 report of hourly fuel oil consumption at the "Francisco Pérez Ríos" power plant in Tula, Mexico. For SO2, the dispersion of these emissions was assessed with the CALPUFF dispersion model. Emissions reductions of > 99% for SO2, PM and Pb, as well as reductions >50% for organic and inorganic toxics were observed when simulating th

Modelling the effective dose to a population from fallout after a nuclear power plant accident-A scenario-based study with mitigating actions.

The radiological consequences of a nuclear power plant (NPP) accident, resulting in the release of radionuclides to the environment, will depend largely on the mitigating actions instigated shortly after the accident. It is therefore important to make predictions of the radiation dose to the affected population, from external as well as internal exposure, soon after an accident, despite the fact that data are scarce. The aim of this study was to develop a model for the prediction of the cumulative effective dose up to 84 years of age based on the ground deposition of 137Cs that is determined s

Continuous improvement of fitness-for-duty management programs for workers engaging in stabilizing and decommissioning work at the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant.

BACKGROUND: Numerous workers have participated in recovery efforts following the accident that occurred at the Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO) Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant after the Great East Japan Earthquake. These workers, belonging to various companies, have been engaged in various tasks since the accident. Given the hazards and stress involved in these tasks and the relatively long time required to transport sick or injured workers to medical institutions, it became necessary to quickly implement a more stringent management program for fitness for duty than in ordinary work

Chromosomal Aberrations in Large Japanese Field Mice (Apodemus speciosus) Captured near Fukushima Dai-ichi Nuclear Power Plant.

Since the Fukushima Dai-ichi Nuclear Power Plant accident, radiation effects on nonhuman biota in the contaminated areas have been a major concern. Here, we analyzed the frequencies of chromosomal aberrations (translocations and dicentrics) in the splenic lymphocytes of large Japanese field mice (Apodemus speciosus) inhabiting Fukushima Prefecture. A. speciosus chromosomes 1, 2, and 5 were flow-sorted in order to develop A. speciosus chromosome-specific painting probes, and FISH (fluorescence in situ hybridization) was performed using these painting probes to detect the translocations and dice

Engineered Iron/Iron Oxide Functionalized Membranes for Selenium and Other Toxic Metal Removal from Power Plant Scrubber Water.

The remediation of toxic metals from water with high concentrations of salt has been an emerging area for membrane separation. Cost-effective nanomaterials such as iron and iron oxide nanoparticles have been widely used in reductive and oxidative degradation of toxic organics. Similar procedures can be used for redox transformations of metal species (e.g. metal oxyanions to elemental metal), and/or adsorption of species on iron oxide surface. In this study, iron-functionalized membranes were developed for reduction and adsorption of selenium from coal-fired power plant scrubber water. Iron-fun

Studies on the sorption and desorption characteristics of Zn(II) on the surface soils of nuclear power plant sites in India using a radiotracer technique.

Zinc adsorption was studied in the soils of three nuclear power plant sites of India. 65Zn was used as a radiotracer to study the sorption characteristics of Zn(II). The sorption of zinc was determined at 25 and 45 degrees C at pH 7.8+/-0.2 in the solution of 0.01 M Ca(NO3)2 as supporting electrolyte. The sorption data was tested both in Freundlich and Langmuir isotherms and could be described satisfactorily. The effect of organic matter and other physico-chemical properties on the uptake of zinc was also studied in all the soil samples. The results showed that the cation exchange capacity, or

Perceived Workplace Interpersonal Support Among Workers of the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plants Following the 2011 Accident: The Fukushima Nuclear Energy Workers' Support (NEWS) Project Study.

OBJECTIVE: The 2011 Fukushima Daiichi nuclear accident was the worst nuclear disaster since Chernobyl. The Daiichi workers faced multiple stressors (workplace trauma, victim experiences, and public criticism deriving from their company's post-disaster management). Literatures suggest the importance of workplace interpersonal support (WIS) in enhancing psychological health among disaster workers. We sought to elucidate the role of their demographics, disaster-related experiences, and post-traumatic stress symptoms on perceived WIS. METHODS: We analyzed self-report questionnaires of 885 workers

Incidence of childhood leukemia before and after shut down of nuclear power plants in Germany in 2011: A population-based register study during 2004 to 2019.

The association between leukemia and proximity to nuclear-power-plants (NPPs) has been assessed in several countries with inconsistent results. A case-control study from Germany had shown an increased risk for childhood leukemia (diagnoses 1980-2003) near NPPs. Germany began shutting down nuclear reactors in 2011, following the Fukushima disaster. We tested whether the previously observed association between leukemia and proximity to NPP persisted despite the shutdown. We used an ecological study design to investigate the incidence of leukemia during 2004 to 2019 in children aged 0 to 14 years

Towards a Kinetic Modeling of the Changes in the Electrical Properties of Cable Insulation during Radio-Thermal Ageing in Nuclear Power Plants. Application to Silane-Crosslinked Polyethylene.

The radio-thermal ageing of silane-crosslinked polyethylene (Si-XLPE) was studied in air under different γ dose rates (6.0, 8.5, 77.8, and 400 Gy·h-1) at different temperatures (21, 47, and 86 °C). The changes in the physico-chemical and electrical properties of Si-XLPE throughout its exposure were determined using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy coupled with chemical gas derivatization, hydrostatic weighing, differential scanning calorimetry, dielectric spectroscopy and current measurements under an applied electric field. From a careful analysis of the oxidation products, it was conf

Occupational Exposure to Low Dose Ionizing Radiation and the Incidence of Surgically Removed Cataracts and Glaucoma in a Cohort of Ontario Nuclear Power Plant Workers.

Ionizing radiation is a human carcinogen and has been shown to increase the risk of non-cancerous ocular disorders. Specifically, findings from epidemiological studies suggest that ionizing radiation leads to the development of cataracts and to a lesser extent glaucoma, however, there are uncertainties of these risks at lower exposures. We analyzed data from a cohort of 60,874 Ontario Nuclear Power Plant (NPP) workers within the Canadian National Dose Registry (NDR). These workers were monitored for whole-body exposure to ionizing radiation using dosimeters, with exposure estimates derived for
