A mixed methods study to explore women and clinicians' response to pain associated with suturing second degree perineal tears and episiotomies [PRAISE].

BACKGROUND: perineal suturing is a common event which affects women across a variety of international settings. Women have expressed pain related to perineal trauma in the postnatal period but little is known about pain during suturing. In addition, there is a lack of evidence to identify how professional decisions are made about pain management during the suturing process. OBJECTIVE: to explore women and clinicians' response to pain during the suturing of second degree tears and episiotomies. DESIGN: mixed method feasibility study which included observation, questionnaires and interviews.

Navigating Uncertainty.

Uncertainty is defined as the conscious awareness, or the subjective experience, of ignorance. Typically but not always experienced as an emotionally negative phenomenon, individuals possess and can improve a set of psychological responses known as uncertainty tolerance to engage uncertainty as opportunity. This is particularly important for leaders navigating organizational change. Unlike articles that describe diagnostic uncertainty in radiologic practice, this work focuses on the underpinnings of neurobiology, psychology, and stress responses to uncertainty in efforts to promote a new appro

Post-Traumatic stress disorder and post-traumatic growth in firefighters: examining the moderating effects of resilience on occupational safety behaviors.

BACKGROUND: Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and posttraumatic growth (PTG) represent divergent outcomes following trauma exposure in high-risk professions. This investigation examined the complex interplay between PTSD, PTG, and resilience in relation to occupational safety behaviors among Turkish firefighters. METHODS: A multi-site cross-sectional study was conducted across five metropolitan fire departments in Turkey (N = 122). Participants completed validated psychometric instruments including the PTSD Checklist for DSM-5 (PCL-5), Posttraumatic Growth Inventory-Expanded Form (PTGI-X),

Resilience, Well-Being, and Professional Practice Capabilities in New Graduate Nurses: A Longitudinal Mediation Study.

SIGNIFICANCE/BACKGROUND: New graduate nurses experience substantial stress during the transition from student to professional practice, which may compromise their well-being and professional practice capabilities. While resilience has been identified as a protective psychological resource, limited longitudinal research has examined how resilience influences professional performance over time or whether well-being functions as a mediating mechanism. Understanding these dynamic relationships is critical for informing evidence-based strategies to support early-career nurses. AIMS: This study aim

Manifestation of anxiety and depression among pediatric patients with psoriasis: A review.

Psoriasis is a chronic, inflammatory skin disorder with manifestations extending beyond visual presentation to encompass psychological burden. Though the association between psoriasis and mental health disorders in adults is widely accepted, there is inadequate research to generalize these findings to pediatric populations. In this review of the literature, we discuss the prevalence of anxiety and depression among pediatric patients with psoriasis in hopes of raising awareness of these associations and advocating for psychological screening and intervention in dermatology practice.

Psychosocial aspects of breast cancer.

Over the past year, several research areas have been noteworthy. This article discusses several reports on psychiatric morbidity and psychological factors of breast cancer, quality-of-life issues related to breast cancer treatment, and psychological factors in breast cancer screening. An area of increasing interest includes studies examining the psychological status and breast cancer screening practices of women at increased risk of developing breast cancer, primarily as a function of family history.

Psychobiological mechanisms underlying the mood benefits of meditation: A narrative review.

Psychological stressors can lead to distress and result in autonomic arousal and activation of a stress response. Ongoing or persistent stress can disrupt the stress response feedback mechanisms and result in elevated cortisol and pro-inflammatory cytokines which can cause damage to brain regions involved in the regulation of mood and emotion. We propose that the magnitude of the stress response experienced in response to psychological stressors depends on a number of modifiable psychological processes including an individual's level of self-compassion, dispositional mindfulness, tendency to r

Reasons for African American student attrition from school psychology programs.

This phenomenological study used a series of three in-depth interviews with seven African American participants, for a total of 21 interviews, to explore their experiences in the specialist and doctoral level school psychology programs they left prior to obtaining a professional entry-level degree. The study's purpose was to investigate what factors contributed to participants' attrition. Findings indicate that misalignment between participants' career aims and the practice of school psychology (as presented in the programs they left) contributed to attrition. Poor relationships with school ps

A qualitative study of the psychosocial and health consequences associated with lymphedema among women in the Dominican Republic.

To date, few studies have addressed the sequelae of lymphatic filariasis, a mosquito-transmitted disease, on the quality of life of affected women in the Americas. In this qualitative study, we conducted 28 semi-structured interviews and 3 focus groups of women with lymphedema or elephantiasis of the leg living in filariasis-endemic areas of the Dominican Republic. Women in our study described a spectrum of consequences associated with their lymphedema but physical, functional, and psychological limitations were not always associated with severity of lymphedema. Data suggests that management f

Development and psychometric evaluation of workplace psychologically violent behaviours instrument.

AIM: To develop an instrument to determine nurses' perceptions of psychologically violent behaviours that they are exposed to in the workplace. BACKGROUND: According to Leymann, psychological terror or mobbing in work life involves hostile and unethical communication, which is directed in a systematic way towards one individual who, due to mobbing, is pushed into a helpless and defenceless position, and being held there by means of continuing mobbing activities. DESIGN: Survey. METHODS: Because nurses who work in hospitals are generally the principle victims of physical, emotional and verba

Family resilience is a protective buffer in the relationship between infertility-related stress and psychological distress among females preparing for their first in vitro fertilization-embryo transfer.

The present study aimed to evaluate psychological distress and scrutinized whether family resilience plays a moderating role in the association between infertility-related stress and psychological distress among infertile females preparing for their first IVF-ET. A total of 492 infertile females completed self-reported measures including the Kessler 10 Psychological Distress Scale (K10), the fertility problem inventory (FPI), and the Family Resilience Assessment Scale (FRAS). The results showed 21 (65.2%) participants reported moderate or higher levels of psychological distress. While controll

Keeping people with dementia moving in hospital to reduce pressure ulcer risk: complexities in care.

People with dementia occupy up to 21% of UK hospital beds at any one time and are at increased risk of developing pressure ulcers. Keeping moving is a fundamental component of pressure ulcer prevention. However, the physical, behavioural and psychological symptoms of dementia can affect a person's ability to 'keep moving' during a hospital admission. These symptoms are currently underaddressed in pressure ulcer prevention guidance and practice. This article aims to fill that gap by exploring how these dementia-related symptoms increase pressure ulcer risk and examining the complexities of keep

The Meaning of Together: Exploring Transference and Countertransference in Palliative Care Settings.

Establishing an empathic clinical relationship is a cornerstone of high-quality palliative care. More than simply approaching patients with a pleasant affect or "being nice," we propose that skilled clinicians routinely employ distinct psychological elements when creating effective bonds with seriously ill patients and their families. Palliative care involvement has been shown to improve a variety of outcomes for patients with serious cancer, and yet the components of this salutary effect are still becoming known in the literature. Many believe that a successful interpersonal relationship is t
