The role of trust in use of preventive services among low-income African-American women.

BACKGROUND: This study explored factors that predict higher trust in primary care providers, and examined the role of patient trust on the use of preventive services for low-income African-American women. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional, population-based telephone survey of 961 African-American women over age 40 in Washington, DC. Two dimensions of trust were examined: overall trust in one's regular primary care provider, and trust that the regular provider had no financial conflict of interest. Self-reported use of mammography, Pap tests, clinical breast exams, colorectal cancer scre

Development and Validation of an Incident Hypertension Risk Prediction Model for Young Adults.

BACKGROUND: Identifying young adults at high risk of hypertension can improve blood pressure screening recommendations. METHODS: We developed models to predict incident hypertension using diverse contemporary cohorts of young adults aged 18 to 39 years from Kaiser Permanente Southern California (derivation and internal validation) and 3 cohort studies (CARDIA [Coronary Artery Risk Development in Young Adults], FHS [Framingham Heart Study], HCHS/SOL [Hispanic Community Health Study/Study of Latinos]; external validation). OBJECTIVES: The effect of employment insecurity on employee health is an important public health issue due to the recent effects of neoliberalism and the global financial crisis (2007-2008) on labor markets. This study aims to evaluate the differences in cardiovascular health status and the use of preventive screening services between standard and nonstandard workers. METHODS: Waged employees (N = 5,338) between the ages of 20 and 64 were grouped into standard (full-time, permanent) and nonstandard (part-time, temporary, or daily) employees. Data from the Fourth Korea National Health and Nutr

What preconception health services would the public find when searching the internet in Australia?: results from a simulated internet-search study.

BACKGROUND: Australian preventive health strategy outlines the importance of preconception health in improving health in the community, across multiple generations and places primary and community healthcare services as a central pillar to effective preconception care. However, there is no national implementation plan to see preconception care proactively offered in healthcare settings in Australia. Instead, there is evidence that most women search the internet for information about pregnancy planning and preparation. In response, this study explores the availability and characteristics of hea

[Insurance system. Prevention from viewpoint of the insurer].

The purpose of an insurance must not be restricted to the payment of claims to those insured persons who suffered a loss, for loss prevention is much preferable to claim settlement. A whole range of different institutions and measures has been established by the Swiss insurers, in which many insurance branches participate. The loss preventing activities can be listed as follows:--Activities of the fire insurers to prevent and fight fires. This is the prevailing duty of the Consulting Agency for Fire Prevention (BfB) as well as the Fire Prevention Service for Industry and Trade (BVD).--Activiti

Women, work, and preventive health care: an exploratory study of the efficacy of HMO membership.

This study's purpose is to explore the possibility of competing roles (paid employment and childcare responsibilities) impinging upon women' … association between women's relative financial responsibilities for their families and their use of preventive health services. Women who live in traditional situations (no employment outside the home, supported by a male) and women who share the financial burden with men (the "new" multiple-earner families) have substantially more Pap and breast examinations, respectively, …

METHODS: A cross-sectional survey was undertaken of 151 community mental health clinicians in New South Wa

Factors affecting the delivery of HIV/AIDS prevention programs by community-based organizations.

Community based organizations (CBOs) play a frontline role in HIV/AIDS prevention activities. CBOs face formidable challenges to effective delivery of HIV prevention services including client characteristics such as homelessness and CBO characteristics such as limited resources and staff turnover. Despite these obstacles, CBOs are generally well positioned to deliver services to specific high-risk populations because they understand their local communities and are connected to the groups they serve. [C1]This qualitative study illustrates that structural, sociocultural, organizational, and indi
