We report the in vitro inhibition of Propionibacterium acnes (P. acnes) by a bacteriocin-like inhibitory substance (BLIS-like substance) produced by Streptococcus salivarius (S. salivarius). Bacteriocins are proteinaceous substances produced by bacteria that are capable of inhibiting the growth of similar bacterial strains. Unlike classical antibiotics, they have a relatively narrow spectrum of killing activity, resulting in a reduction in the intensity of selection for resistance. These findings suggest that BLIS may potentially be used for its anti-P. acnes activity in the treatment of acne.

Although an increasing number of investigators confirm the latent infection of Propionibacterium acnes in degenerated nucleus pulposus tissue, the molecular mechanism by which P. acnes evades being eliminated and establishes persistent colonization in the nucleus pulposus (NP) tissue remains unknown. In this study, we ascertained that despite the resistance by nucleus pulposus cells (NPCs) to the invasion of P. acnes through microbicidal phagocytosis, P. acnes is able to nevertheless promote its long-term colonization by inhibiting the sustained bactericidal capability of NPCs. This allows P. …

Propionibacterium acnes (P. acnes) is an anaerobic and gram-positive bacterium involved in the pathogenesis and inflammation of acne vulgaris. This study particularly focuses on the antimicrobial effect of Lacticaseibacillus paracasei LPH01 against P. acnes, a bacterium that causes acne vulgaris. Fifty-seven Lactobacillus strains were tested for their ability to inhibit P. acnes growth employing the Oxford Cup and double dilution methods. The cell-free supernatant (CFS) of L. paracasei LPH01 demonstrated a strong inhibitory effect, with an inhibition zone diameter of 24.65 ± 0.27 mm and a mini…

In this article, we present the case of a 47-year-old man who underwent Bentall-Bono procedure and frozen elephant trunk prosthesis implantation due to severe aortic regurgitation and aortic dilatation with a second-time endovascular stent-graft repair in descending aorta. Over eight years, a subacute graft infection by Propionibacterium acnes was developed, culminating in cardiogenic shock secondary to severe aortic regurgitation due to a complete aortic root dehiscence because of multiple aortic pseudoaneurysms. The patient underwent emergency surgery in which the replacement of the graft by…

BACKGROUND: Cutibacterium (Propionibacterium) acnes is assumed to play an important role in the pathogenesis of acne.
OBJECTIVES: To examine if clones with distinct virulence properties are associated with acne.
METHODS: Multiple C. acnes isolates from follicles and surface skin of patients with moderate to severe acne and healthy controls were characterized by multilocus sequence typing. To determine if CC18 isolates from acne patients differ from those of controls in the possession of virulence genes or lack of genes conducive to a harmonious coexistence the full genomes of dominating CC18…

Macrolide-resistant Propionibacterium acnes are frequently isolated from patients with acne vulgaris, and the most resistant isolates (>90% resistance) have the 23S rRNA mutation. An increase in resistant P. acnes with this mutation is thought to be caused by the inappropriate use of antimicrobials. Therefore, we studied the mutation frequency of macrolide resistance in P. acnes in vitro. When P. acnes mutants were exposed to clarithromycin after being incubated in broth without antimicrobials, resistant mutants with the 23S rRNA mutation were not isolated. However, the mutants were obtained a…

Although antibiotics are a common treatment for acne, the difficulties inherent to effective antimicrobial penetration in sebum and selective antimicrobial action in the skin are compounded by increasing resistance of Propionibacterium acnes clinical isolates. To address these problems, we engineered Pentobra, a peptide-aminoglycoside molecule that has multiple mechanisms of antibacterial action and investigated whether it can be a potential candidate for the treatment of acne. Pentobra combines the potent ribosomal activity of aminoglycosides with the bacteria-selective membrane-permeabilizin…

Coracoid transfer procedures are highly effective at improving glenohumeral stability in patients with recurrent shoulder instability; complication rates from this procedure are generally low. We present the first case in the literature of a Propionibacterium acnes (P. acnes) infection following a coracoid transfer. The case stresses the importance of proper antibiotic prophylaxis for patients undergoing Latarjet procedures, as well as the workup for a painful postoperative shoulder, and the need to maintain cultures from the shoulder for up to 21 days to isolate P. acnes.

BACKGROUND: The precise roles of Propionibacterium acnes and other anaerobic bacteria in the pathogenesis of acne are still unclear. Recent studies have shown that P. acnes can be further classified into several phylotypes with distinct phenotypes and virulence. Their distribution patterns in acne lesions have rarely been demonstrated.
OBJECTIVES: To analyse distribution patterns of P. acnes phylotypes and Peptostreptococcus species on the skin surface of patients with acne and healthy controls, and in comedones, papules and pustules from patients.
METHODS: A total of 370 samples from 95 pat…

Propionibacterium acnes is a well-recognized cause of chronic postoperative endophthalmitis after cataract surgery. The subtle clinical signs of this infection and its initial favorable response to topical steroids may lead to delayed diagnosis and treatment. Two patients with culture proven P. acnes endophthalmitis after cataract surgery that presented with prominent pigmented keratic precipitates (KPs) and low-grade iritis in the involved eye were managed. Both cases had initial treatment with diagnostic pars plana vitrectomy (PPV) with intraocular antibiotic (IOAB) injection. Secondary trea…

Propionibacterium acnes is thought to be a potential triggering agent of sarcoidosis. We describe a woman who developed chronic meningitis with sarcoid-like multisystemic involvement under treatment for human immunodeficiency virus infection. P. acnes was isolated from cerebrospinal fluid. We assume that P. acnes might have triggered this sarcoid-like reaction with meningitis, as a consequence of an immune reconstitution.

Acne is associated with hyperkeratosis, elevated levels of skin sebum and growth of Propionibacterium acnes (P. acnes) and Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus). Furthermore, P. acnes promotes inflammation by inducing IL-6 production and oxidative stress. The aim of this study was to assess the antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and antibacterial potential of a hop-CO₂-extract with 50% humulone and lupulone. The susceptibility of P. acnes and S. aureus to the hop extract was tested by using the broth microdilution technique. The minimal inhibitory concentrations (MIC) for P. acnes and S. aureus were 3…

Acne vulgaris is a chronic inflammatory skin condition classified by the Global Burden of Disease Study as the eighth most prevalent disease worldwide. The pathophysiology of the condition has been extensively studied, with an increase in sebum production, abnormal keratinization of the pilosebaceous follicle, and an inflammatory immune response all implicated in its etiology. One of the most disputed points, however, is the role of the gram-positive anaerobic bacterium Propionibacterium acnes in the development of acne, particularly when this organism is also found in normal sebaceous follicl…

Recent progress has steadily reported the existence of the diverse strains of Propionibacterium acnes, and these studies have contributed to the elucidation of their contradictory roles between normal commensals and pathogens. In this review, the authors aimed to provide an update on the recent understanding of research about P. acnes strain diversity and acne, analyzing the potential implications for clinical applications. Before the era of genomic research, P. acnes was known to be distinguished based on serological agglutination tests, cell wall sugar analysis, or fermentation traits. Since…

Sarcoidosis likely results from the exposure of a genetically susceptible subject to an environmental agent, possibly an infectious one. Mycobacterial and propionibacterial organisms are the most commonly implicated potential etiologic agents. Propionibacterium acnes is the only microorganism, however, found in sarcoid lesions by bacterial culture. To evaluate the pathogenic role of this indigenous bacterium, we screened for the bacterium in sarcoid and non-sarcoid tissues using immunohistochemical methods with novel P. acnes-specific monoclonal antibodies that react with cell-membrane-bound l…
