AIM: To report a short-time result of three-piece inflatable penile prosthesis (IPP) implantation on treating patients with organic erectile dysfunction (ED).
METHODS: Three-piece IPPs were implanted in 42 Chinese patients with ED refractory to systemic treatment between May 2002 and May 2004. The etiologies of ED were neurogenic (28 with paraplegia and seven with traumatic nervi-erigentes injury); congenital venous leakage (5 cases), fibrosis of corpus cavernosum (1case) and Klinefelter's syndrome (1 case). This report describes the provision of an implant-supported hybrid overdenture in an 8-year-old child with mandibular anodontia. An interdisciplinary approach to treatment planning was employed. Two implant fixtures were placed in the canine regions and ball attachments connected to provide support and retention for the prosthesis. There was only one implant-related complication during the first follow-up year. Close follow-up during the child's growing years is essential for the maintenance of the peri-implant tissues and to replace the prosthesis as mandibular growth occurs.

BACKGROUND AND AIM OF THE STUDY: Transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) has been introduced for the treatment of severe symptomatic aortic stenosis in patients not suitable for surgical valve replacement. A patient with aortic root abscess was successfully treated with a newly developed suture technique named "circumferential transmural sutures". This suture technique provides 1)a tight attachment of the prosthesis to the aortic wall and 2)a secure healing of infection by exposure of the abscess cavity to blood flow without complicated procedures. This clinical report describes an unusual situation of nasal discharge that was initially considered to be caused by a leaking obturator prosthesis in a partially repaired cleft palate patient. Ultimately, the diagnosis was rhinorrhea induced by the loading of dental implants that supported the obturator. The differential diagnoses of nasal irritation, blocking of nasal drainage posterior or anterior through a premaxillary defect, vasomotor rhinitis, and gustatory rhinorrhea are presented and discussed, as well as the measures taken to reach the final diagnosis.

This clinical report highlights some of the problems in providing a suitable prosthesis for a patient who suffers from systemic sclerosis. A conventional removable partial denture may not have been suitable because of the lack of denture bearing area, changing peripheral seal, and insufficient teeth to support and retain the denture. An implant-retained FPD overcame these difficulties. One would hope that, with regular maintenance and monitoring, quoted prosthesis success of 15 years can be achieved.

In a computed tomographic study, 56 patients with facial defects were examined to assess the availability of bone for extraoral Brånemark implants (3 or 4 mm long, 3.75 mm diameter) to bear facial prostheses.
