Associations between psychological factors and daily step count in patients with lumbar spinal stenosis.

BACKGROUND: Body mass index, pain, female sex, and age have been reported as predictors of physical activity in patients with lumbar spinal stenosis (LSS). However, no reports have examined the psychological factors associated with physical activity in people with LSS. PURPOSE: To use psychological assessments to identify the factors associated with physical activity measured as daily step count in people with LSS. METHODS: Seventy-one patients who received outpatient physical therapy were included. All patients completed the following scales at baseline: Zurich Claudication Questionnaire; s

Social distance modulates prosocial behaviors in the gain and loss contexts: An event-related potential (ERP) study.

This study aimed at examining how social distance modulates costly prosocial behaviors in the gain (i.e., helping another win a good outcome) and loss contexts (i.e., helping another avoid a bad outcome). To this end, participants were instructed to choose between two lotteries - One of the two lotteries was costly to their payment and always better than the other, which would result in the other person having a greater chance of ending up with more money - to give another person (a friend or a stranger) in the gain or loss context while electroencephalograms (EEGs) were recorded. The behavior

Mediating roles of psychological entitlement and presence of meaning in the associations between parental measures (rejection and overprotection) and adolescent internet addiction.

BACKGROUND: Although internet addiction has been related to negative parenting, few studies have investigated relationships involving parental rejection and parental overprotection and adolescent internet addiction. The present study examined the role of psychological entitlement and the presence of meaning in mediating relationships between parental rejection and overprotection and adolescent internet addiction. METHODS: Self-reported data were drawn from a cross-sectional study involving a large-scale sample of 4091 secondary vocational schools students (45.9 % girls; Mage = 16.77 years, SD

Schizotypal traits and their relation to rejection sensitivity in the general population: Their mediation by quality of life, agreeableness and neuroticism.

Schizotypal traits are a cluster of personality styles suggesting a potential liability for schizophrenia-spectrum disorders. Interpersonal schizotypal traits include cognitive disorganisation which consists of social anxiety, and introvertive anhedonia which consists of a lack of pleasure in social activities. Rejection sensitivity is evident all along this continuum. This study aimed to determine whether psychosocial quality of life (QOL), neuroticism and agreeableness mediates the relation between schizotypy and rejection sensitivity. Three hundred and eighteen participants from a predomina

Urban inclusion as wellbeing: Exploring children's accounts of confronting diversity on inner city streets.

The diversity of people living in a city is often most visible on inner city streets. These streets are also the neighbourhood environment of children who live in the central city. In the past, the wellbeing and sensibilities of children have been marginalised in planning practices in western cities but this is beginning to change with child-friendly and inclusive city discourses now more common. In this paper we report on children's experiences confronting diversity in inner-city Auckland. In 2012, 40 inner-city children, 9-12 years, participated in walking interviews in their local streets a

Social integration, psychological distress, and smoking behaviors in a midwest LGBT community.

BACKGROUND: Lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) populations have smoking rates twice that of their heterosexual counterparts. To design effective outreach, prevention, and treatments for these individuals, a comprehensive understanding of associated factors is needed. OBJECTIVE: To increase understanding of how social integration and psychological distress are related to smoking behaviors among LGBT populations. DESIGN: A cross-sectional, descriptive study of 135 LGBT adults using an online data collection strategy. Multivariate analyses were performed to examine factors associate

Predictors of resilience for people with spinal cord injury over two periods of COVID-19 social distancing restrictions: a 12-month longitudinal study using structural equation modelling.

BACKGROUND: The novel coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic is disproportionately impacting the health of people with disability. Resilience has remained an important health promoting characteristic during periods of social distancing restrictions. Factors promoting resilience for people with disability under the context of the pandemic remains poorly understood. Studies have yet to investigate evidence-based factors that promote resilience over multiple periods of restrictions for people with disability. METHODS: A longitudinal study developed via a collaborative partnership between peer-support w

Multivariate Patterns of Posterior Cortical Activity Differentiate Forms of Emotional Distancing.

Distancing is an effective tactic for emotion regulation, which can take several forms depending on the type(s) of psychological distance being manipulated to modify affect. We recently proposed a neurocognitive model of emotional distancing, but it is unknown how its specific forms are instantiated in the brain. Here, we presented healthy young adults (N = 34) with aversive pictures during functional magnetic resonance imaging to directly compare behavioral performance and brain activity across spatial, temporal, and objective forms of distancing. We found emotion regulation performance to be…

Patient-Reported Knee Function Versus Star Excursion Balance Performance as Correlates of Psychological Return-to-Sport Readiness After Anterior Cruciate Ligament Reconstruction.

Background: Psychological readiness, quantified by the Anterior Cruciate Ligament Return to Sport after Injury (ACL-RSI) scale, is one of the most consistent correlates of return-to-sport success following ACL reconstruction. Whether psychological readiness reflects an independent construct or is related to measured functional performance is not known. Purpose: To evaluate the associations between patient-perceived knee function and objective performance on a functional task, as quantified by traditional scoring, kinematics, and motion quality, and psychological readiness 9 to 12 months after

Impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on functional dyspepsia and irritable bowel syndrome: A population-based survey.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Functional gastrointestinal disorders are a group of stress-sensitive gut-brain disorders. The COVID-19 outbreak has caused immense stress and anxiety among the general public. Strict measures to counter COVID-19 emergency, including physical distancing, have also taken a toll on physical and mental health. We investigated the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the gastrointestinal and psychological symptoms of functional dyspepsia (FD) and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). METHODS: An online survey was conducted in Japan for a group of randomly assigned panelists from May 2

Characterization of event related potentials using information theoretic distance measures.

Analysis of event-related potentials (ERPs) using signal processing tools has become extremely widespread in recent years. Nonstationary signal processing tools such as wavelets and time-frequency distributions have proven to be especially effective in characterizing the transient phenomena encountered in event-related potentials. In this paper, we focus on the analysis of event-related potentials collected during a psychological experiment where two groups of subjects, spider phobics and snake phobics, are shown the same set of stimulus: A blank stimulus, a neutral stimulus and a spider stimu

Understanding Social Camouflaging in Autistic Adults: Integrating Cognitive and Psychosocial Predictors.

Camouflaging refers to strategies used by autistic individuals to mask traits and adapt to neurotypical norms. Beyond socio-cognitive abilities, recent work suggests that camouflaging is also shaped by psychosocial factors. This study tested an integrative, prediction-oriented model of camouflaging. We hypothesized that higher levels of camouflaging would be associated with socio-cognitive functioning, perceived social misfit, mental health, and lower autism acceptance, and that an integrative model combining these factors would predict individual differences in camouflaging. Participants were

Heightened Susceptibility to Social Exclusion in Poor Sleepers: A Resting-State fMRI Study.

Sleep critically influences socio-emotional functioning during interpersonal interactions; however, the relationship between poor sleep quality and susceptibility to social exclusion remains unclear. This study aimed to investigate this relationship and its underlying neural mechanisms. A total of 147 healthy sleepers (HS) and 105 individuals with poor sleep quality (PS) completed a social exclusion imagery task, followed by resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). Negative feelings and reaction times during the task, as well as seed-based functional connectivity (FC) of the

Development and Effectiveness of Tinnitus Activities Treatment-Online, a Self-Paced Remote Counseling Program.

PURPOSE: For many people with bothersome tinnitus, accessing in-person intervention is difficult. We developed a remote counseling program, Tinnitus Activities Treatment-Online (TAT-Online), to provide for patients' tinnitus education and coping strategies. We aimed to test the effectiveness and acceptability of the remote counseling program in adults with tinnitus. METHOD: We included adults with chronic tinnitus who had access to a smartphone, tablet, or computer. In total, 59 adult participants completed all study procedures out of 243 adults who were initially enrolled. Participants compl

Having more friends is associated with greater sensitization to social exclusion: neural and behavioral evidence.

Social rejection profoundly affects well-being. How do features of people's real-world social networks relate to responses to social exclusion? People central in social networks-e.g. who have many friends-may be less distressed by exclusion, since they have many sources of support, or more sensitive to it, if they are more attuned to social feedback. We characterized a village's social network; a subset of residents (N = 74) completed a functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) study involving social exclusion in groups characterized by varying social relationships (spouses, friends, strang

The effect of training to target cognitive biases towards social rejection in eating disorders.

OBJECTIVE: This study examined the effect of cognitive bias modification for interpretation (CBM-I) training in Korean women with eating disorders (EDs). METHOD: Sixty-three women with EDs participated in the study. Participants were randomly assigned to the intervention group where they received six sessions of CBM-I training (n = 31) in addition to treatment-as-usual or were put on a waiting list (n = 32). Participants' interpretation and attention biases, emotion regulation, affect, and ED psychopathology were assessed at baseline, end-of-intervention (4 weeks), and follow-up (8 weeks). R

Associations of continuum beliefs with personality disorder stigma: correlational and experimental evidence.

PURPOSE: A pervasive and deeply entrenched stigma of personality disorders exists. For other mental disorders, a large body of research suggests that continuum beliefs (i.e., the endorsement of continuum perspectives on mental health and psychopathology) stimulate more favorable attitudes toward affected persons. Additionally, mental disorder classification systems increasingly incorporate continuous personality disorder models. Yet, it is unclear how continuum beliefs are related to personality disorder stigma. This study evaluated the link of continuum beliefs with personality disorder stigm

Negative affect moderates the effect of social rejection on frontal and anterior cingulate cortex activation in borderline personality disorder.

Patients with borderline personality disorder (BPD) have a heightened sensitivity to social exclusion. Experimental manipulations have produced inconsistent findings and suggested that baseline negative affect (NA) might influence the experience of exclusion. We administered a standardized social exclusion protocol (Cyberball paradigm) in BPD (n = 39) and age-matched and sex-matched healthy controls (n = 29) to investigate the association of NA on social exclusion and activation in brain regions previously implicated in this paradigm. Compared with controls, patients with BPD showed higher act

Cognitive and affective processing of social exclusion in borderline personality disorder and social anxiety disorder.

Causal attributions of social events are crucial for understanding emotional responses. Aim of the study was to identify appraisal processes in response to social exclusion in borderline personality disorder (BPD) and social anxiety disorder (SAD). Twenty-five patients with BPD, 25 patients with SAD and 25 healthy controls played Cyberball, a virtual ball-tossing paradigm that experimentally induces social exclusion. Causal attributions, subjective feelings and action tendencies in response to social exclusion were assessed. Both clinical groups showed more internal attributions and less contr

The feminine ideal and transactional sex: Navigating respectability and risk in Swaziland.

Women who engage in transactional sex are not only at increased risk of HIV and intimate partner violence, but also face social risks including gossip and ostracism. These social and physical risks may be dependent on both what a woman expects and needs from her partner and how her community perceives the relationship. Gender theory suggests that some of these social risks may hinge on whether or not a woman's relationship threatens dominant masculinity. We conducted a qualitative study in Swaziland from September 2013 to October 2014 to explore transactional sex and respectable femininity thr
