Psychophysical and Electrophysiological Evidence for Enhanced Pain Facilitation and Unaltered Pain Inhibition in Acute Low Back Pain Patients.

UNLABELLED: The aim of this case-control study was to examine differences in neural correlates of pain facilitatory and inhibitory mechanisms between acute low back pain (LBP) patients and healthy individuals. Pressure pain tolerance, electrical pain detection thresholds, pain ratings to repetitive suprathreshold electrical stimulation (SES) and conditioned pain modulation (CPM) were assessed in 18 patients with acute LBP and 18 healthy control participants. Furthermore, event-related potentials (ERPs) in response to repetitive SES were obtained from high-density electroencephalography. Result

Psychophysical correlates of contralateral efferent suppression. I. The role of the medial olivocochlear system in "central masking" in nonhuman primates.

An extensive physiological literature, including experimental and clinical studies in humans, demonstrates that activation of the medial olivocochlear (MOC) efferent system, by either contralateral sound or electrical stimulation, can produce significant alterations in cochlear function and suggests a role for the MOC system in influencing the auditory behavior of binaural hearing. The present data are from psychophysical studies in nonhuman primates which seek to determine if the noted physiological changes in response to contralateral acoustic stimulation have a perceptual counterpart. The Role of Axillary Lymph Node Dissection Width and Radiotherapy in Axillary Vein Pathologies and Psychophysical Outcomes in Breast Cancer.

Background and Objectives: Lymphedema is one of the most important morbid complications of modified radical mastectomy (MRM) surgery. It can cause limb movement restriction and psychosocial deformities in some patients. This study aimed to determine and compare the physiological and pathological changes that develop in the axillary venous structures in patients who underwent axillary lymph node dissection (ALND) and sentinel lymph node biopsy (SLNB). Materials and Methods: Patients diagnosed with breast cancer who underwent MRM and breast-conserving surgery (BCS) plus SLNB between 2017 and 202

Reaction force exposure for tightening tool users: A psychophysical based experimental study of electric right-angle nutrunners.

Reaction forces from nutrunner tools constitute a risk of developing MSDs. However, recommendations for sustainable reaction force levels are lacking. The aim of this study was to inform recommendations regarding reaction load exposures from right-angle nutrunners. Through a psychophysics approach, experienced assembly workers subjectively assessed reaction loads when using a nutrunner in six combinations of tool tightening strategy, work-pace and screw-joint stiffness. Electromyography, tool and joint parameters were measured. Regardless of tightening strategy, joint stiffness and work-pace c…

Using sellar region tumor's size as a predictor of psychophysical and electrophysiological perimetric visual losses: a logistic regression approach.

BACKGROUND: Sellar region tumor growth represents an important cause of visual loss due to mechanical compression of the optic nerve apparatus. Many investigations have used non-invasive tools to evaluate the visual field consequences of this damage, and good associations have been reported between psychophysical and electrophysiological perimetries. Few reports have considered the tumor size as a predictor of visual field loss. AIMS: In the present study, we evaluated the association between the visual perimetry measured by Humphrey visual field analyzer and multifocal visual evoked cortical

Gender differences in psychophysically determined maximum acceptable weights and forces for industrial workers observed after twenty years.

PURPOSE: In the year 1991, manual materials handling guidelines were published by Liberty Mutual Research Institute for Safety. In these guidelines, maximum acceptable weights (MAWs) and forces (MAFs) for lifting, lowering, pushing, pulling, and carrying were derived from studies conducted in a 20 year span before the above publication date. The question is whether the present generation of workers has retained the same gender differences and absolute values in psychophysically determined MAWs and MAFs as those reflected in the guideline. METHODS: Twenty-four female industrial workers perform

Secular changes in psychophysically determined maximum acceptable weights and forces over 20 years for male industrial workers.

The most frequent and expensive cause of compensable workplace injuries loss is manual material handling (MMH). In an attempt to minimise these losses, refinement of existing MMH guidelines is a component of redesigning high risk MMH jobs. In the development of the present MMH 1991 guidelines (Snook and Ciriello 1991), maximum acceptable weights (MAWs) and forces (MAFs) were derived from studies conducted in a 21 year time span before the above publication date. The question arises whether the present generation of workers have the same psychophysically determined weights and forces as those r

Visual cortical inhibitory function in migraine is not generally impaired: evidence from a combined psychophysical test with an fMRI study.

A robust, visual masking test that was developed to be feasible with functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) was used to examine the visual cortical inhibitory function in migraine patients with visual aura at both psychophysical and cortical levels. The study showed that the decreased visibility of a visual target was associated with a reduction in cortical activation in the primary visual cortex. The suppression of the transient on-response and after-discharge of neurons to the target was most likely to be responsible for reducing cortical activation, rendering the target less visible o

Long-term remyelination after optic neuritis: A 2-year visual evoked potential and psychophysical serial study.

Thirty-one patients were followed-up, at 3-month intervals for the first year and at 6-month intervals for the second year, after an episode of optic neuritis. The object was to confirm previous evidence for a progressive shortening of visual evoked potential (VEP) latencies and to determine whether this is associated with any change in the clinical ocular examination, visual fields or contrast sensitivity. VEP latencies were found to decrease significantly during both the first and (less strikingly) the second year, the most marked changes occurring between 3 and 6 months. Contrast sensitivit

Psychophysical and neural correlates of noised-induced tinnitus in animals: Intra- and inter-auditory and non-auditory brain structure studies.

Tinnitus, a ringing in the ear or head without an external sound source, is a prevalent health problem. It is often associated with a number of limbic-associated disorders such as anxiety, sleep disturbance, and emotional distress. Thus, to investigate tinnitus, it is important to consider both auditory and non-auditory brain structures. This paper summarizes the psychophysical, immunocytochemical and electrophysiological evidence found in rats or hamsters with behavioral evidence of tinnitus. Behaviorally, we tested for tinnitus using a conditioned suppression/avoidance paradigm, gap detectio
