Experimentally induced REM sleep fragmentation affects psychophysiological habituation to emotional stimuli.

Rapid eye movement sleep is believed to reduce physiological reactivity to emotional experiences. While rapid eye movement sleep fragmentation has been associated with maladaptive emotional processing in clinical and animal models, its causal role has not been experimentally isolated in healthy humans. In this study, we tested whether selectively fragmenting rapid eye movement sleep impairs overnight psychophysiological habituation in healthy individuals, aiming to identify the cortical dynamics involved. Seventeen participants (mean age ± SD, 23.18 ± 3.94, 14 females) completed two counterbal

Rumination Out Loud? Linguistic, Neural, and Psychophysiological Correlates of the Think-Aloud Paradigm.

Stress and rumination are closely linked and contribute to the development and maintenance of mental disorders, yet assessing rumination in an ecologically valid way remains challenging. Conducting the think aloud paradigm (TAP) following the Trier Social Stress Test (TSST) allows for the real-time evaluation of ruminative responses, providing insights beyond traditional self-report measures. This study aimed to investigate ruminative responses to the TSST using the TAP, while simultaneously assessing psychological (stress, affect, state rumination), physiological (heart rate), and neural data

Multimodal assessment of tinnitus using functional near-infrared spectroscopy and psychophysiological measures.

OBJECTIVE: To use a multimodal approach to classify individuals with tinnitus from controls, and individuals with mild versus severe tinnitus. DESIGN: We have previously shown feasibility of a non-invasive imaging technique called functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) to detect tinnitus-related changes in cortical activity and classify individuals with tinnitus from controls, as well as individuals with mild versus severe tinnitus. In this study we have used a multimodal approach by recording heart rate, heart rate variability and skin conductance, in addition to fNIRS signals, from i

Psychophysiological and Neurophysiological Correlates of Dropping Objects from Hands in Carpal Tunnel Syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Dropping objects from hands (DOH) is a common symptom of carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS). We evaluated the clinical, neurophysiological, and psychophysiological features of 120 CTS patients to elucidate the DOH pathophysiology. Forty-nine healthy controls were included. METHODS: In the patients, the Boston Carpal Tunnel Questionnaire (BCTQ), the Douleur Neuropathique 4 questions (DN4), and a numeric rating scale for pain (NRS) were evaluated. In patients and controls, we evaluated bilateral median and ulnar motor and sensory nerve conduction studies, cutaneous silent period and cutan

Being watched by a humanoid robot and a human: Effects on affect-related psychophysiological responses.

Eye contact with a humanoid robot has been shown to evoke similar affect and affiliation related psychophysiological responses as eye contact with another human. In this pre-registered study, we investigated whether these effects are dependent on the experience of being "watched". Psychophysiological responses (SCR, zygomatic and corrugator facial EMG, frontal EEG asymmetry) to a humanoid robot's or a human model's direct vs. averted gaze were measured while manipulating the participants' belief of whether the robot/human model could see them or not. The results showed greater autonomic arousa

Female primary and secondary psychopathic variants show distinct endocrine and psychophysiological profiles.

Research with predominantly male samples supports primary and secondary developmental pathways to psychopathy that are phenotypically indistinguishable on aggressive and antisocial behavior. The aim of this study was to examine whether female variants of psychopathy show divergent endocrine (i.e., cortisol, dehydroepiandrosterone [DHEA], testosterone, and their ratios) and psychophysiological (i.e., heart rate variability [HRV]) reactivity to social provocation. We also tested whether variants differed on reactive aggression when performing a competitive reaction time task against the fictitio

Don't judge me: Psychophysiological evidence of gender differences to social evaluative feedback.

Human beings have a basic need for esteemed social connections, and receiving negative self-evaluative feedback induces emotional distress. The aim of the current study is to measure eye movements (a physiological marker of attention allocation) and pupillary responses (a physiological marker of cognitive and emotional processing) as online and objective indices of participants' reaction to positive/negative social evaluations from the same or opposite sex. Following the paradigm, subjective mood ratings and heart rate variability (HRV) - as an objective index of regulatory effort- were measur

The differences between patients with panic disorder and healthy controls in psychophysiological stress profile.

BACKGROUND: Alarming somatic symptoms, in particular, cardiovascular symptoms, are the characteristic feature of panic attacks. Increased cardiac mortality and morbidity have been found in these patients. Power spectral analysis of electrocardiogram R-R intervals is known to be a particularly successful tool in the detection of autonomic instabilities in various clinical disorders. Our study aimed to compare patients with panic disorder and healthy controls in heart rate variation (HRV) parameters (very-low-frequency [VLF], low-frequency [LF], and high-frequency [HF] band components of R-R int

The feasibility of an augment reality system to study the psychophysiological correlates of fear-related responses.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have successfully used augmented reality (AR) as an aid to exposure-based treatments for anxiety disorders. However, to the best of our knowledge, none of these studies have measured the physiological correlates of the fear response, relying solely on self-reports and behavioral avoidance tests. METHODS: As the physiological defensive reactivity pattern impacts on the treatment effectiveness, we tested the feasibility of an AR system integrated in a mobile and wearable device for assessing the psychophysiological mechanisms (heart rate) involved in fear responses

Cognitive psychophysiological treatment of bodily-focused repetitive behaviors in adults: An open trial.

BACKGROUND: Body-focused repetitive behaviors (BFRBs), such as hair pulling, skin picking, and nail biting, are repetitive, destructive, and nonfunctional habits that cause significant distress. Separate BFRBs form a cohesive group and could be assessed as part of the Tourette/tic spectrum or obsessive-compulsive spectrum of disorders. The treatment of choice is either antidepressant or behavioral treatment, both of which have shown effectiveness. The cognitive psychophysiological (CoPs) model focuses on the tension and emotional build up that triggers habits by addressing cognitive-behavioral

Transdermal neuromodulation of noradrenergic activity suppresses psychophysiological and biochemical stress responses in humans.

We engineered a transdermal neuromodulation approach that targets peripheral (cranial and spinal) nerves and utilizes their afferent pathways as signaling conduits to influence brain function. We investigated the effects of this transdermal electrical neurosignaling (TEN) method on sympathetic physiology under different experimental conditions. The TEN method involved delivering high-frequency pulsed electrical currents to ophthalmic and maxillary divisions of the right trigeminal nerve and cervical spinal nerve afferents. Under resting conditions, TEN significantly suppressed basal sympatheti

Evaluation of children with selective mutism and social phobia: a comparison of psychological and psychophysiological arousal.

Although children with social phobia (SP) and selective mutism (SM) present similarly in a clinical setting, it remains unclear whether children with SM are unable to speak due to overwhelming anxiety, or whether withholding speech functions as an avoidance mechanism. A total of 35 children (ages 5-12 years) with either SM (n = 10), SP (n = 11), or no diagnosis (n = 14) participated in the current study. Measurements included clinician, child, and parent ratings as well as behavioral observations and psychophysiological measures. Independent evaluators and clinicians rated children with SM as

Psychophysiological analyses demonstrate the importance of neural envelope coding for speech perception in noise.

Understanding speech in noisy environments is often taken for granted; however, this task is particularly challenging for people with cochlear hearing loss, even with hearing aids or cochlear implants. A significant limitation to improving auditory prostheses is our lack of understanding of the neural basis for robust speech perception in noise. Perceptual studies suggest the slowly varying component of the acoustic waveform (envelope, ENV) is sufficient for understanding speech in quiet, but the rapidly varying temporal fine structure (TFS) is important in noise. These perceptual findings hav

Psychophysiological aspects of voluntary skilled movement after stroke: a follow-up study.

OBJECTIVES: The aim of the study was to follow the psychophysiological evolution of a self-paced voluntary skilled movement in hemiparetic subjects after ischemic stroke by means of a skilled performance task (SPT). The task consisted in starting a sweep of an oscilloscope trace by pushing one button with the left index finger (trigger point), and in stopping it within a central area on the oscilloscope screen, between 40 and 60 ms (correct performance) after the start of the sweep, by pushing the other button with the right index finger. A SPT yields a considerable amount of information on th

ADHD and schizophrenia phenomenology: visual scanpaths to emotional faces as a potential psychophysiological marker?

Commonalities in the clinical phenomenology and psychopharmacology of ADHD and schizophrenia are reviewed. The potential of psychostimulants to produce psychotic symptoms emphasizes the need for objective psychophysiological distinctions between these disorders. Impaired emotion perception in both disorders is discussed. It is proposed that visual scanpaths to facial expressions of emotion might prove a potentially useful psychophysiological distinction between ADHD and schizophrenia. There is consistent evidence that both facial affect recognition and scanpaths to facial expressions are impai

Psychophysiological responses of female headache sufferers and controls using a picture-viewing paradigm.

Despite the advancement of the biopsychosocial model, the interrelationship between behavioral, emotional, and physiological factors in tension-type headache (TTH) remains unclear. Using a picture-viewing paradigm, the present study investigated differences between females with TTH and controls on physiological reactivity, affective valence and arousal, and oral motor habits. In addition, the concordance between EMG activity and self-reported oral habits (i.e., proprioceptive awareness) and EMG activity and self-reported affect (i.e., affective coherence) were measured using within-subject cor
