Gender, headache frequency, and headache intensity predict psychosocial functioning and quality of life in a sample of United States combat veterans.

Headache disorders are common among United States (U.S.) military veterans, particularly women veterans, likely due to frequent exposure to stresses and injury. Headaches are often comorbid with psychopathology which can negatively impact quality of life and functioning. Yet there is limited evidence on the impact of headaches on quality of life. The purpose of this study was to investigate the associations among gender, headache frequency, headache intensity, and quality of life in combat-exposed U.S. veterans. Participants (n = 345, 68.3% male, 19.7% Hispanic/Latino, 33.5% Black/African Amer

The impact of psychological trauma on weight loss, psychosocial functioning, and psychopathology in bariatric and metabolic surgery candidates: a systematic review.

Up to 22% of bariatric and metabolic surgery (BMS) candidates experience trauma or stressor-related symptoms and/or diagnoses (trauma-related distress), such as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), yet research assessing their impact on surgical outcomes remains limited. To our knowledge, this is the first systematic review examining how presurgical trauma-related distress affects postsurgical BMS outcomes. Five electronic databases and five grey literature sources were searched from inception to April 2025 for quantitative studies of adults undergoing BMS with current symptoms or diagnoses

Impact of the COVID-19 Pandemic on Swedish Adolescents' Mental Health, Psychosocial Functioning, Risk Behaviours, and Victimisation: Gender Differences and Implications.

The COVID-19 pandemic has shown varying effects on adolescents' mental health, psychosocial functioning, risk behaviours, and victimisation. This study aims to examine the changes reported by a sample of Swedish adolescents (N = 1607) at the end of the first year of the pandemic in relation to these factors. Data were collected with an electronic survey between September 2020 and February 2021, targeting upper-secondary high school students (aged 15-19 years). The results indicate a relatively low overall impact of the pandemic on Swedish upper-secondary school students, with notable gender di…

Cognitive reserve moderates the relationship between childhood maltreatment, objective and subjective cognition, and psychosocial functioning in individuals with first-episode psychosis.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to assess the relationship between childhood maltreatment (CM), objective and subjective cognition, and psychosocial functioning in adults with first-episode psychosis (FEP) by examining the moderating role of cognitive reserve (CR). A secondary objective was to explore whether unique CM subtypes (physical and/or emotional abuse, sexual abuse, physical and/or emotional neglect) were driving this relationship. METHOD: Sixty-six individuals with FEP (Mage = 27.3, SD = 7.2 years, 47% male) completed a comprehensive neuropsychological test battery, the Cognitive Compla…

Efficacy of Functional Remediation on Cognitive and Psychosocial Functioning in Patients with Bipolar Disorder: Study Protocol for a Randomized Controlled Study.

BACKGROUND: Neurocognitive impairment is a prominent characteristic of bipolar disorder (BD), linked with poor psychosocial functioning. This study's purpose is to evaluate the effectiveness of functional remediation (FR) in enhancing neurocognitive dysfunctions in a sample of remitted patients with diagnosis of BD in comparison to treatment as usual-TAU. To quantify the neurocognitive damage, the Brief Assessment of Cognition in Affective Disorders (BAC-A) will be used, and the overall psychosocial functioning will be measured with the Functioning Assessment Short Test-FAST. METHODS: The ran…

Objective and subjective psychosocial functioning in bipolar disorder: an investigation of the relative importance of neurocognition, social cognition and emotion regulation.

BACKGROUND: People with bipolar disorder (BD) experience significant psychosocial impairment. Understandings of the nature and causes of such impairment is limited by the lack of research exploring the extent to which subjectively reported functioning should be valued as an indicator of objective dysfunction, or examining the relative influence of neurocognition, social cognition and emotion regulation on these important, but different aspects of psychosocial functioning in the context of mania and depression symptoms. This study aimed to address this paucity of research by conducting a compre…

Developmental functions of microglia: Impact of psychosocial and physiological early life stress.

Microglia play numerous important roles in brain development. From early embryonic stages through adolescence, these immune cells influence neuronal genesis and maturation, guide connectivity, and shape brain circuits. They also interact with other glial cells and structures, influencing the brain's supportive microenvironment. While this central role makes microglia essential, it means that early life perturbations to microglia can have widespread effects on brain development, potentially resulting in long-lasting behavioral impairments. Here, we will focus on the effects of early life psycho

Psychosocial factors and their role in symptomatic gastroesophageal reflux disease and functional dyspepsia.

Patients with symptoms of GERD and dyspepsia are among the most common consulters in general practice and are different from their counterparts in the community who choose not to consult although they suffer from similar symptoms. They represent a heterogeneous group with considerable symptom overlap. They have a relatively poor quality of life and endoscopic findings can only explain symptoms in about half of these patients. Thus psychosocial factors which could contribute to their morbidity should be explored. While some studies have methodological shortcomings, main findings are that key ps
