OBJECTIVE: Studies on the etiology, treatment, and psychosocial effects of clefts among children born with the condition abound. Limited studies, however, have focused on the mothers of these children. This study aimed to explore the immediate reaction of mothers to seeing their children born with a cleft for the first time. Mothers' knowledge of cleft and the support systems available to them were also explored.
DESIGN: Employing a qualitative description approach, data were collected through face-to-face individual in-depth interviews using a semistructured interview guide.

OBJECTIVES: Socially isolated individuals report more cardiac symptoms, suffer increased cardiovascular morbidity and mortality, and experience higher levels of stress and anxiety than those with more effective support resources. However, the complex interactions of psychosocial factors implicated in the disease process remain to be fully elucidated. We sought to explore these relationships, with the addition of a novel psychosocial variable, anger rumination, which could be associated with increased cardiovascular risk.
DESIGN: We examined the association of psychological stress, social supp

Individuals with Turner Syndrome (TS) can experience not only physical and medical differences but are also at risk for neurocognitive and associated psychosocial challenges. Specifically, research shows increased likelihood of difficulties with visual-spatial reasoning, executive functioning, attention, and mathematics skills. One emerging area of research focuses on deficits in social skills and increased prevalence of anxiety within this population. This review introduces relevant genetic influences of TS and examines existing research on social skills and anxiety in individuals with TS. Th

Social isolation is a prevalent consequence of acquired brain injury (ABI) that has notable impacts on wellbeing. Although social connection is recognized as central to recovery, little is known about how service providers understand and promote it. This study explored how services foster social connection post-ABI, the barriers and enablers encountered, how success is understood and what could strengthen future provision. Six online focus groups were conducted with 19 individuals working or volunteering across ABI services in the UK, USA, Australia and New Zealand. Data were analysed using re

Firearm injury is now the leading cause of death among children and adolescents in the United States, yet far more children survive gunshot wounds and encounter substantial long-term consequences. This article argues that pediatric firearm survivors constitute a population of children with medical complexity, a group defined by severe chronic health conditions, significant functional limitations, substantial service needs, and high health care utilization. Survivors often experience multisystem trauma, neurological impairment, chronic pain, organ dysfunction, and enduring functional deficits r

The 2025 Myanmar earthquake caused extensive destruction. Beyond 3,800 direct disaster-related deaths (direct DRDs) and 5,100 injuries, indirect disaster-related deaths (indirect DRDs) remain a persistent concern. Indirect DRDs are deaths caused by secondary health effects after a disaster, rather than by the direct physical impact of the hazard itself. They may arise through disrupted healthcare delivery, deteriorating living and evacuation environments, interruptions to chronic-disease management, and psychosocial stress. Evidence from Japan, including the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake an

INTRODUCTION: Each year in the United States, an estimated 1.2 million youth with chronic conditions or functional limitations reach adulthood and must transition from pediatric to adult health care, a process often fragmented by service loss, limited adult providers, and complex waiver and financial systems. The University of Alabama at Birmingham developed the Staging Transition for Every Patient (STEP) Program which includes an annual Healthcare Transition Conference. Here we describe the conference and analyze two years of attendee feedback.
METHODS: Conference planning followed an iterat

Intellectual disability and autism spectrum disorder are neurodevelopmental disorders that emerge during the developmental period. A significant barrier that impedes the social adaptation of individuals with these disorders is the exhibition of problem behaviors, such as self-injurious, stereotyped, and aggressive/destructive behaviors. In recent years, these problem behaviors have been collectively referred to as "challenging behavior," in accordance with the contention that they result from an interaction between the individual and his or her social environment. INTRODUCTION: Children and adolescents living with HIV in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) continue to face significant barriers to diagnosis, treatment adherence, retention in care and psychosocial support, despite progress in prevention and treatment coverage. Family-centred care (FCC) has emerged as a promising model that positions families-not just individual children-as the central unit of care, with potential to improve clinical and psychosocial outcomes while addressing persistent gaps in health system responsiveness.
METHODS: Our scoping review synthesized evidence on FCC implementation strat

Peritoneal dialysis (PD) provides independence and quality of life comparable to in-center hemodialysis, but its long-term success depends on comprehensive training and sustained support. This editorial underscores the pivotal role of PD nurses as educators, partners, and motivators in empowering patients and caregivers. Beyond clinical skills, effective training must also address psychosocial stressors, as patient and caregiver burnout is an overlooked barrier to technique survival and adherence. Drawing on ISPD and NKF-KDOQI guidance, we highlight strategies such as early education, routine

Since the escalation of the war in Ukraine in February 2022, more than six million Ukrainians have sought refuge across Europe, facing significant psychosocial strain. Disrupted social networks, family separation, economic uncertainty, and barriers to services contribute to elevated levels of anxiety, depression, and post-traumatic stress, particularly among women and single mothers who constitute the majority of refugees. Despite host countries' efforts to provide protection and basic services, access to mental health care remains limited due to overstretched systems, language barriers, burea

INTRODUCTION: Cancer initiation, progression and recurrence are intricate mechanisms that depend on various components: genetic, psychophysiological, or environmental. Exposure to chronic stress includes fear of recurrence that can affect biological processes that regulate immune and endocrine systems, increase cancer risk, and influence the survival rate. Previous studies show that psychological interventions might influence the level of cortisol that has been extensively used as a biomarker for measuring hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis functioning and body's immunity response. Breast cancer patients may have unmet supportive care needs during treatment, including symptom management of treatment-related toxicities, and educational, psychosocial, and spiritual needs. Delivery of supportive care is often a low priority in low- and middle-income settings, and is also dependent on resources available. This consensus statement describes twelve key recommendations for supportive care during treatment in low- and middle-income countries, identified by an expert international panel as part of the 5th Breast Health Global Initiative (BHGI) Global Summit for Supportive Care, w
