Short term versus long term psychotherapy in opioid dependence: a pilot study.

A multicenter prospective open study was performed in order to compare the effectiveness of 2 modalities of individual dynamic psychotherapy in a group of recently detoxified opioid dependent patients. Thirty four patients were assigned to receive either short-term dynamic psychotherapy (ST) or long-term dynamic psychotherapy (LT); both modalities were offered along with drug counselling. At the end of the treatment, the short term therapy group was followed up for 2 years, while the long term therapy group continued the follow up for one year, due to the different time span of the treatment a

Optional Web-Based Videoconferencing Added to Office-Based Care for Women Receiving Psychotherapy During the Postpartum Period: Pilot Randomized Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND: Depression and anxiety during the postpartum period are common, with psychotherapy often being the preferred method of treatment. However, psychological, physical, and social barriers prevent women from receiving appropriate and timely psychotherapy. The option of receiving psychotherapy through videoconferencing (VC) during the postpartum period presents an opportunity for more accessible and flexible care. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to assess the feasibility, acceptability, and preliminary effectiveness of optional VC added to usual office-based psychotherapy, with a p

Group therapy for gender-dysphoric heterosexual men.

The treatment and clinical management of gender dysphoric heterosexual men often poses a challenge to the clinician. Gender dysphoric patients pursuing various lifestyle options may seek psychotherapy to deal with some of their conflicts. This paper describes one form of counseling--group therapy--which has been helpful to gender dysphoric heterosexual men and outlines the group psychotherapy program at the Gender Clinic of the Clarke Institute of Psychiatry.

Psychotherapy for Major Depressive Disorder and Generalized Anxiety Disorder: A Health Technology Assessment.

BACKGROUND: Major depressive disorder and generalized anxiety disorder are among the most commonly diagnosed mental illnesses in Canada; both are associated with a high societal and economic burden. Treatment for major depressive disorder and generalized anxiety disorder consists of pharmacological and psychological interventions. Three commonly used psychological interventions are cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), interpersonal therapy, and supportive therapy. The objectives of this report were to assess the effectiveness and safety of these types of therapy for the treatment of adults wit

A systematic review of the combined use of electroconvulsive therapy and psychotherapy for depression.

OBJECTIVE: Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) is one of the most effective treatments for severe major depressive disorder. However, after acute-phase treatment and initial remission, relapse rates are significant. Strategies to prolong remission include continuation phase ECT, pharmacotherapy, psychotherapy, or their combinations. This systematic review synthesizes extant data regarding the combined use of psychotherapy with ECT for the treatment of patients with severe major depressive disorder and offers the hypothesis that augmenting ECT with depression-specific psychotherapy represents a pro

The necessity of combined therapy in the treatment of shame: a case report.

Abstract In some situations, combined psychotherapy may not be merely a choice, but a necessity for successful treatment. I present a case report of a hospitalized Vietnam veteran who had sexually abused one of his daughters. In individual therapy, the patient learned to speak about himself, his significant guilt, and his shame, in a trusting environment. After a year of outpatient individual work, I felt that the addition of group psychotherapy would help this withdrawn man to connect to a social milieu. Although anxious about self-disclosure and confidentiality, he joined a heterogeneous vet

[Individual therapy as a special form of complex psychotherapy].

A combination of several psychotherapeutic methods will be meaningfull only if they are tuned to, and supplement, each other. Indiscriminate combinations may produce harmful effects. The choice of psychotherapeutic methods depends upon the objective that the psychotherapist desires to accomplish. In psychotherapy it is essential that all actions taken be governed by plans worked out in accordance with the particular objectives to be accomplished.

Ketamine and psychotherapy for the treatment of psychiatric disorders: systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Ketamine is an effective short-term treatment for a range of psychiatric disorders. A key question is whether the addition of psychotherapy to ketamine treatment improves outcomes or delays relapse. AIM: To identify all studies combining psychotherapy with ketamine for the treatment of psychiatric disorders to summarise their effects and make recommendations for future research. METHOD: The review protocol was prospectively registered with PROSPERO (registration number CRD42022318120). Potential studies were searched for in MEDLINE, Embase, PsycINFO, SCOPUS, the Cochrane library

Enhancing psychiatry education: effectiveness of a psychodynamic psychotherapy module for borderline personality disorder for psychiatry residents.

BACKGROUND: Psychodynamic psychotherapy is the treatment of choice for borderline personality disorder (BPD); however, psychiatric residents frequently report difficulty in applying it, partly due to the lack of structured training models. This study developed and evaluated the effectiveness of psychodynamic psychotherapy learning modules for BPD among Indonesian psychiatry residents. METHODS: A quasi-experimental pre-/post-test control group study using mixed methods was conducted across nine psychiatric residency programs in Indonesia. Thirty-four residents were recruited, of whom 33 comple

Network meta-analysis of the effectiveness of psychotherapies with or without medication for treating adult depression.

OBJECTIVE: To ascertain whether psychotherapies combined with medication are more efficacious than those without medication and determine which combinations yield the best results. METHODS: We conducted a network meta-analysis of randomised controlled trials (RCTs) comparing behavioural activation (BA), psychoanalytic/psychodynamic psychotherapy (DYN), interpersonal psychotherapy (IPT), individual face-to-face cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT (ftf)), group cognitive behavioural therapy (gCBT), and computerised or internet cognitive behavioural therapy (iCBT) with each other, or with treatme

The Role of Systemic Family Psychotherapy in Glycemic Control for Children with Type 1 Diabetes.

(1) Background: Family factors play an important role in the management of diabetes, establishing a relationship between conflicts and non-adherence to therapy. High values of HbA1c are involved in specific complications of the disease (retinopathy, nephropathy, neuropathy, ketoacidosis). This study aimed to determine the role of systemic family psychotherapeutic interventions in increasing the quality of parent-child/adolescent relationships and in optimizing the child's glycemic control. (2) Methods: In this prospective observational study, 64 parents of children and adolescents with type 1

A Naturalistic Comparison of Group Transdiagnostic Behaviour Therapy (TBT) and Disorder-Specific Cognitive Behavioural Therapy Groups for the Affective Disorders.

BACKGROUND: Transdiagnostic psychotherapies are designed to apply the same underlying treatment principles across a set of psychiatric disorders, without significant tailoring to specific diagnoses. Several transdiagnostic psychotherapy protocols have been developed recently, each of which has its own strengths and weaknesses. One promising treatment is Transdiagnostic Behaviour Therapy (TBT), in that it is one of the few transdiagnostic treatments to date shown to be effective in patients with depressive and anxiety disorders. However, TBT has only been investigated via individual psychothera

Enduring effects of psychological treatments for anxiety disorders: meta-analysis of follow-up studies.

BACKGROUND: It is a widespread opinion that after treatment with psychotherapy, patients with anxiety disorders maintain their gains beyond the active treatment period, whereas patients treated with medication soon experience a relapse after treatment termination.AimsWe aimed to provide evidence on whether enduring effects of psychotherapy differ from control groups. METHOD: We searched 93 randomised controlled studies with 152 study arms of psychological treatment (cognitive-behavioural therapy or other psychotherapies) for panic disorder, generalised anxiety disorder and social anxiety diso

Do identity-focused treatments improve mental health outcomes? A critical examination of assumptions and evidence in diversity-oriented psychotherapy research.

Controversy exists over the use of standard evidence-based mental health treatments for diverse populations. In particular, there is some skepticism regarding their efficacy, as well as concerns over their potential harms, for clients from non-majority groups and in those who experience identity-related stressors and discrimination. Because of the perceived inadequacy of standard treatments, identity-focused therapies (IFTs) have been developed for diverse populations, including cultural adaptations of existing therapies and treatments focused on identity-related stressors in sexual, gender, a

Effectiveness of compassion-focused therapy for self-criticism in patients with personality disorders: a multiple baseline case series study.

OBJECTIVE: Targeting self-criticism, the tendency to negatively evaluate and judge aspects of oneself, may improve treatment efficacy for personality disorders (PDs). This study aimed to test whether adding 12-week group compassion-focused therapy (CFT) that explicitly targets self-criticism to treatment as usual (TAU) would reduce self-criticism in patients with PDs. METHOD: Twelve patients with PDs participated in a multiple baseline study, randomly allocated to different baseline lengths. The primary outcome was twice-weekly assessed self-critical beliefs during baseline, treatment, and fo

Metacognitive therapy for generalized anxiety disorders in group: A case study.

OBJECTIVES: In Metacognitive therapy (MCT), homework is used, for example, to increase awareness of thoughts and thought processes, to challenge metacognitive beliefs in real-life situations, and to practice new ways of processing thoughts, feelings, and symptoms. All MCT treatment manuals include homework assignments to be given between each session. METHOD: The following study provides a detailed description of the implementation of homework in a group-based MCT treatment for generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) at an outpatient clinic in Norway. The treatment described in this case consisted

Responding to Suicide in School Communities: An Examination of Postvention Guidance from Expert Recommendations and Empirical Studies.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: We review the published literature on a school's response after a student dies by suicide ("postvention"). We examine published recommendations based on expert guidance and empirical studies that have evaluated postvention measures. RECENT FINDINGS: Experts recommend careful communication with family, staff, and students that adheres to published suicide reporting guidelines. Experts also emphasize the importance of identifying and supporting high-risk students. Few robust, controlled studies have identified effective postvention measures. Effective measures tended to occur
