Pediculus humanus capitis: an update.

Head lice infestation, or pediculosis capitis, caused by Pediculus humanus capitis, is a common health concern. In the US, where pediculosis capitis is the most prevalent parasitic infestation of children, 6 to 12 million people are affected every year. Pediculosis capitis remains confined to the scalp. Scalp pruritus is the cardinal symptom, although patients with lice can be asymptomatic. Pruritus with impetiginization should prompt the physician to look for lice or viable nits. All close contacts should be examined. Treatment directed at killing the lice and the ova should be considered onl

Pyrethroid insecticides: poisoning syndromes, synergies, and therapy.

Pyrethroid insecticides are widely used, but there have been relatively few reports of systemic poisoning. These reports have, however, shown that pharmacotherapy is difficult and that the duration of poisoning can be unexpectedly long. Pyrethroids are ion channel toxins prolonging neuronal excitation, but are not directly cytotoxic. Two basic poisoning syndromes are seen. Type I pyrethroids produce reflex hyperexcitability and fine tremor. Type II pyrethroids produce salivation, hyperexcitability, choreoathetosis, and seizures. Both produce potent sympathetic activation. Local effects are als

Efficacy of three pyrethroids against Leptotrombidium fletcheri (Acari: Trombiculidae) infected and noninfected with scrub typhus.

Toxicities of three pyrethroids, d-phenothrin, decamethrin, and permethrin, were evaluated in the laboratory against Leptotrombidium fletcheri (Womersley & Heaslip). The susceptibilities between populations of the species infected and noninfected with scrub typhus were investigated. The three pesticides exhibited different toxicities to the chiggers. D- phenothrin was the most toxic, followed by decamethrin, then permethrin. There were no significant differences between susceptibilities of the infected and noninfected populations. Log-probit regression lines indicated that the species was most

Efficacy and transdermal absorption of permethrin in scabies patients.

The clinical efficacy and transdermal absorption of permethrin, a new synthetic insecticide was investigated in ten scabies patients. All patients were successfully treated with one application of a cream, containing 5% permethrin. Apart from mild postscabies dermatitis no side-effects were observed. The mean weight of cream used per patient was 25 g (range 21-32; mean content of permethrin 1250 mg). The degree of permethrin absorption was assessed indirectly by determination of conjugated and unconjugated cis- and trans-CVA (a metabolite of permethrin) excretion in urine using two dimensional

Seed ticks.

Seed ticks, the first-stage larvae of hard ticks, are not always recognized. They are tiny (0.6 mm) and have six legs, rather than the eight legs found on nymphal and adult ticks. Seed ticks may transmit Rocky Mountain spotted fever, tularemia, babesiosis and Lyme disease. Pediculocides are effective in removing the larvae.

The role of chrysanthemum phytochemicals in neural tube development: a narrative review of underlying mechanisms.

BACKGROUND: Neural tube defects (NTDs) have long been attributed to genetic and hereditary factors, but emerging evidence highlights the sig … d Wnt/β-catenin pathways, reducing oxidative stress and supporting neurulation. Conversely, natural pyrethrins induce oxidative stress and DNA damage; high-dose flavonoids act as pro-oxidants and endocrine disruptors, and readily cross the placenta, raising fetal concerns. The convergence on caspase-8 suggests a double-edged sword effect. However, direct evi …

Suspected poisoning of domestic animals by pesticides.

A retrospective study was carried out by reviewing all suspected cases of domestic animal poisoning attributed to pesticides, reported to th … hem. Insecticides (40.8%) proved to be the most common group of pesticides involved and exposure to pyrethrins-pyrethroids accounted for the majority of calls. According to the MPCC data, there has been a decrease in the number of suspected poisonings cases attributed to pesticides that have been banned by the EU, including aldicarb, carbofuran, endosulfan a …

Compatibility of behavioral disruptors in attract-and-kill formulations for sustainable control of Drosophila suzukii (Diptera: Drosophilidae).

Drosophila suzukii (Diptera: Drosophilidae) is a major pest of soft-skinned fruits, inflicting economic losses through pre-harvest infestation. Among reduced-risk strategies, Attract-and-Kill (A&K) presents an alternative to full-cover insecticide sprays by concentrating exposure to insecticide-laced lures. However, compatibility of insecticides and attractants, as well as application volume, requires optimization to improve efficacy. We evaluated A&K formulations that combined organic Entrust SC (spinosad), Pyganic (pyrethrin), and conventional Gowan Malathion-8 Flowable (malathion), Mustang

Effects of fenpropathrin on adult zebrafish reproduction and offspring development.

Fenpropathrin (FEN), a widely used insecticide, is frequently detected in aquatic environments, raising significant concerns about its ecological risks. In this study, a subacute exposure experiment was conducted on adult zebrafish exposed to FEN for 28 d to evaluate reproductive toxicity and developmental effects on the F1 and F2 generations, as well as underlying mechanisms. FEN exposure significantly increased the proportion of immature oocytes in females and decreased the percentages of spermatids and spermatozoa in males. These gonadal alterations were accompanied by dysregulation of game

Knockdown Effects of Pyrethroid and Neonicotinoid-Treated Nets on Rhodnius prolixus.

Kissing bugs (Rhodnius prolixus) are vectors of Trypanosoma cruzi, posing risks to military personnel and working dogs in endemic regions. This study quantified time-dependent knockdown of R. prolixus on commercial 300-series (80% blockage) netting treated with dinotefuran (neonicotinoid) or esfenvalerate (pyrethroid) under controlled laboratory conditions. Laboratory-reared adult R. prolixus were exposed to 8.2 × 8.2 cm net clippings in modified WHO cone bioassays. Four insects per replicate were exposed for 3, 6, 9, 12, or 15 minutes (five replicates per exposure × treatment; N = 300, includ

Rising of pyrethroid resistance mutations (kdr) in the dengue vector Aedes aegypti from northeastern Argentina.

Insecticide resistance poses a significant threat to the control of the main dengue vector, Aedes aegypti. Knockdown resistance mutations (kdr) have been associated with pyrethroid resistance and embody the primary source of genetically resistant mosquitoes. This study describes the evolution of two kdr mutations, V1016I and F1534C, in Ae. aegypti from Posadas, Argentina, based on TaqMan genotyping data generated from two sampling times, 2019 and 2024, at the same collection sites. Consistent with global studies, we observed a significant increase in the frequency of these kdr alleles (>14%) a

A case of fatal chlorfenapyr poisoning: evidence from histopathology and autopsy.

Chlorfenapyr poisoning is rare in clinical practice, with limited documented cases. This study aims to elucidate the clinical progression and pathological features of fatal chlorfenapyr poisoning through a forensic autopsy case. We present a case involving a 15-year-old male who died following oral ingestion of chlorfenapyr. Autopsy and histopathological examinations were performed, supplemented by toxicological analysis. Findings included decerebrate rigidity, cerebral edema, myocardial contraction band necrosis, pulmonary hemorrhage, and rhabdomyolysis. Histopathology confirmed neuronal dama

Interactive effects of nitrite and bifenthrin on bioaccumulation, oxidative stress and immune responses of Haliotis discus hannai.

Nitrite (NO2-) and bifenthrin (BF), common environmental pollutant, have been proven to perform toxic effects on marine organisms. To have a better understanding of their effects on marine organism, Haliotis discus hannai was exposed to 0.1 mg/L NO2- and/or 10 μg/L BF for 28 days. The results showed that the gills in direct contact with the water environment exhibited the highest levels of BF bioaccumulation (89.37-142.36 μg/kg), especially after NO2- exposure (P < 0.05). Transcriptome analysis of gills showed that significant enrichments were observed in metabolic, signaling and immune pathwa

Novel insight into the mechanisms of neurotoxicity induced by type I and type II pyrethroids via disrupting the gut-brain axis in lizards.

Type I and type II pyrethroids are widely used and frequently detected in agricultural environments. The neurotoxic effects and underlying mechanisms of pyrethroids in native animal populations, including lizards as common farmland inhabitants, remain unclear. This study exposed male lizards (Eremias argus) to type I bifenthrin (BF) and type II fluvalinate (FA) pyrethroids for 28 days, resulting in abnormal behaviors. Targeted analyses indicated that neurotransmitters, including dopamine, GABA, acetylcholine, and choline in lizard plasma, were significantly decreased with alterations in the ch

Ceratitis capitata (Diptera: Tephritidae) susceptibility to bait toxic.

The aim of this research was to evaluate the susceptibility of C. capitata to insecticides composed of malathion, deltamethrin and spinetoram associated with the food attractants Biofruit®, Cera Trap® and sugarcane molasses. The baits were formulated through mixtures of attractants and insecticides, at the concentration recommended by the manufacturer (C100) and a concentration corresponding to 80% of the recommended concentration (C80). After offering the baits, their toxicity was evaluated depending on the evaluation time. Higher susceptibility rates were found in formulations with malathion

Sublethal effects of cyfluthrin, atrazine, and prothioconazole on the development of European bumblebee (Bombus terrestris) colonies.

BACKGROUND: Bumblebees (Bombus spp.) are essential pollinators of agricultural crops, relying primarily on nectar and pollen for nutrition. However, these floral resources often contain pesticide residues that may exert sublethal effects on colony performance. While acute impacts are difficult to observe, chronic exposure can undermine colony development and increase the risk of collapse. The field-level effects of commonly used pesticides such as cyfluthrin, atrazine, and prothioconazole on the European bumblebee (Bombus terrestris) remain poorly understood. To address this gap, we evaluated
