Expression of interleukin-33 and its receptor ST2 in periapical granulomas and radicular cysts.

BACKGROUND: Interleukin-33 (IL-33) is a recently identified cytokine belonging to the IL-1 family and ligand for the IL-1 receptor-related p … bers of IL-33- and ST2-positive fibroblasts and endothelial cells between periapical granulomas and radicular cysts (all P > 0.05). Similarly, numbers of ST2-positive mononuclear cells did not differ between periapical granulomas and radicular cysts (P > 0.05). The majority of epithelial cells in radicular cysts were IL-33 positive, while the small proportion of …

Replantation of Displaced Underlying Successor and Marsupialization of Radicular Cyst associated with a Primary Molar.

Radicular cysts are by far the most common cystic lesions of the jaw. However, those arising from primary teeth are comparatively rare, comprising only 0.5 to 3.3%. The aim of this paper is to present clinical, radiographic and histopathological characteristics of radicular cyst associated with a primary mandibular molar causing unusual displacement of the permanent successor. Extraction of primary tooth along with extirpation of cyst was done under local anesthesia. The displaced premolar was also extracted and then replanted in the socket after proper alignment. Healing was uneventful and th…

[Complex treatment of a large radicular cyst in the anterior region of the maxilla. Case report].

As opposed to other odontogenic cysts, the radicular cyst is always produced by intraradicular infection, therefore it is important to eliminate the cause of the inflammation as well. During the healing of the radicular cyst, the infected tooth should be treated by extraction or root canal treatment completed by surgical intervention. The presented case is a 77 year-old male patient with Type II Diabetes, who required oral surgery and endodontic treatment. Despite of the age and diabetes of the patient, the bone regeneration was rapid and complete. Seven months after starting the treatment, th…

Possible role of apoptosis in the pathogenesis and clinical evolution of radicular cyst: an immunohistochemical study.

AIM: To investigate whether the apoptotic cascade is activated through the extrinsic pathway in epithelial lining and connective tissue of radicular cysts. METHODOLOGY: Fifteen radicular cysts were fixed in formalin, embedded in paraffin wax and processed for immunohistochemistry to evaluate the expression of polyclonal antibodies against Tumour necrosis factor-related apoptosis-inducing ligand (TRAIL), DR5 and caspase-3. Immunocomplexes were treated with the secondary antibodies and finally detected using the avidin-biotin-peroxidase complex. Immunoreactivity was visualized by development wi…

Conservative treatment of a radicular cyst in a 5-year-old child: a case report.

The present report describes the management of a radicular cyst in a 5-year-old child. The treatment comprised extraction of the primary teeth involved followed by marsupialization. A removable appliance with a resin extension penetrating into the cystic cavity was used to help decompress the lesion. This treatment allowed rapid healing of the lesion and eruption of the permanent incisors without the need for orthodontic treatment.

[Incidence of radicular cysts in a series of 125 chronic periapical lesions. Histopathologic study].

The incidence of radicular cysts in 125 chronic periapical lesions was studied in 36 cases of periapical surgery (28.8%), and to 89 tooth extractions (71.2%). Histopathology revealed 18 radicular cysts (14.4%) and 107 lesions corresponding to chronic apical periodontitis (C.A.P.) or granulomas (85.6%). Cholesterol clefts, a fibrous capsule and presence of a cavity were more common in the cysts, significant differences being observed with respect to chronic apical periodontitis.

Two cases of mandibular radicular cysts with ciliated epithelium: an electron microscopic study.

We studied two cases of mandibular radicular cysts lined in part with ciliated epithelium by examining them histopathologically and ultrastructurally. In addition, we examined the incidence of cilia in 205 radicular cysts in the biopsy materials collection in our Department. No other mandibular cysts having cilia in the lining were found, and so these were very rare. Regarding the histogenesis of the cilia, we consider that the development of cilia in mandibular radicular cysts may be due to true metaplasia rather than to adaptation which is a functional requisite of the lining epithelium for …

Keratinization of radicular cyst epithelial lining or occurrence of odontogenic keratocyst in the periapical region?

Sections of 565 radicular cysts were examined for keratinization of epithelium. 4 cysts showed keratinization, 2 of ortho and 2 of para type. Due to other histological features typical for odontogenic keratocysts, it was concluded that these cysts were odontogenic keratocysts that occurred in the periapical region of the involved teeth.

Immunoinflammatory cells and Beta-defensin-3 in radicular cysts of primary and permanent teeth.

The expression of hBD-3 and quantification of immune and inflammatory response cells (non-degranulated and degranulated mast cells, mature and immature plasmacytoid dendritic cells, mature and immature Tregs, T lymphocytes, cytotoxic T lymphocytes, and B lymphocytes) were evaluated in the radicular cysts (epithelium/capsule) of primary and permanent teeth. The relationship between the size of the radiographic lesion and expression of hBD-3 was also evaluated. Radicular cysts were subjected to immunohistochemical analysis to quantify the immune and inflammatory response cells and to evaluate hB…

TLR4 expression and its immunopathogenic role in inflammatory radicular cysts: a clinicopathological study.

Inflammatory radicular cysts are among the most frequently diagnosed odontogenic cysts and arise as a consequence of chronic periapical inflammation of endodontic origin. Their development and persistence are associated with continuous microbial stimulation and activation of local immune responses. Toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4) is a member of the pattern recognition receptor (PRR) family. In periapical pathology, TLR4 is essential for detecting microbial antigens derived from the infected root canal system. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the immunohistochemical (IHC) expression of TLR…

Surgical Management of Radicular Cyst With the Application of a Natural Platelet Concentrate: A Case Report.

Traumatic dental injuries usually involve the dentoalveolar region, and they readily affect the teeth and their surrounding soft and hard tissues. The common sequelae of traumatic dental injuries lead to pulpal necrosis and apical periodontitis along with cystic changes. The current case report describes the surgical management of a radicular cyst in the periapical region of maxillary incisors and highlights the efficacy of natural platelet concentrate [platelet-rich fibrin (PRF)] used for postoperative healing. A 38-year-old male patient presented to the department with pain and mild swelling…

A deep learning approach for radiological detection and classification of radicular cysts and periapical granulomas.

OBJECTIVES: Dentists and oral surgeons often face difficulties distinguishing between radicular cysts and periapical granulomas on panoramic imaging. Radicular cysts require surgical removal while root canal treatment is the first-line treatment for periapical granulomas. Therefore, an automated tool to aid clinical decision making is needed. METHODS: A deep learning framework was developed using panoramic images of 80 radicular cysts and 72 periapical granulomas located in the mandible. Additionally, 197 normal images and 58 images with other radiolucent lesions were selected to improve mode…

Langerhans Cells Correlate With Macrophages for Defense Mechanisms in the Atrophic Epithelium of Radicular Cysts.

Langerhans cells (LCs) play important roles in cell-mediated immune reactions, as well as in the pathogenesis of periapical lesions. The aim of this study is to evaluate the role of LCs in the proliferative epithelium of radicular cysts (RCs) and the release of the proinflammatory cytokine tumor necrosis factor α (TNF-α) associated with epithelial thickness. Thirty cases of RCs and 30 cases of residual RCs were randomly selected. Morphologic analysis was performed to evaluate the association between the inflammatory infiltrate, cystic epithelial thickness and lesion size, in addition to immuno…

Immunoexpression of transforming growth factor beta and interferon gamma in radicular and dentigerous cysts.

INTRODUCTION: The aim of this study was to evaluate and compare the immunohistochemical expression of transforming growing factor beta (TGF-β) and interferon gamma (IFN-γ) between radicular cysts (RCs) and dentigerous cysts (DCs). METHODS: Twenty RCs and DCs were selected for analysis of the immunoexpression of TGF-β and IFN-γ in the epithelium and capsule. RESULTS: The cell reactivity of TGF-β and IFN-γ in the lining epithelium and capsule of RCs showed no significant differences when compared with DCs (P > .05). There was a tendency of a higher expression of TGF-β in the capsule of DCs. C…
