Extracranial Radiofrequency Treatment for Painful Tic Convulsif Syndrome Under Local Anesthesia.

INTRODUCTION: Painful tic convulsif syndrome is ipsilateral facial trigeminal neuralgia combined with hemifacial spasm, which is relatively rare in the clinic. Microvascular decompression is currently considered to be an effective treatment. We report extracranial radiofrequency treatment of painful tic convulsif syndrome under local anesthesia, a technique which provides a safer and more economical treatment for this kind of patient. CASE PRESENTATION: We report a case of painful tic convulsif syndrome which was treated with extracranial radiofrequency therapy of the trigeminal nerve and fac

[Electrotherapy of supraventricular tachycardia (atrial fibrillation/atrial flutter)].

Contrary to patients with the WPW-syndrome and AV nodal reentry in whom radiofrequency catheter ablation is the therapy of first choice for cure from these arrhythmias instead of life-long medical therapy, pharmacologic therapy of atrial fibrillation and atrial flutter remains the treatment of choice in these patients. If, however, atrial fibrillation with rapid atrioventricular conduction is medically intractable and associated with severe haemodynamic impairment, these patients may be offered catheter ablation of AV conduction by radiofrequency energy. Compared to DC ablation, this approach

Endocardial ablation-resistant ivabradine-sensitive atrial tachycardia suggestive of an epicardial origin in the left atrial appendage.

UNLABELLED: A 23-year-old woman presented with 200,409 heart beats/day due to an atrial tachycardia (AT) lasting one year and tachycardia-induced cardiomyopathy. None of the antiarrhythmic or rate control drugs terminated the AT or sufficiently reduced the heart rate during the AT. Thus, she underwent radiofrequency catheter ablation of the AT. Ultra-high-resolution mapping suggested that the AT originated from the epicardial left atrial appendage (LAA), and endocardial radiofrequency ablation failed to eliminate the AT, although acceleration and transient termination of the AT during ongoing

Evaluation of Skin Biophysical Parameters and Angiogenesis Using CD34 as a Biomarker in Older Diabetic Women Treated with Radiofrequency.

BACKGROUND: The prevalence of type 2 diabetes mellitus (t2DM) has been steadily increasing. Patients with t2DM need to slow down the skin ageing processes and to obtain a rejuvenating effect. Treatments that do not damage the superficial layers of the epidermis could be a promising solution for those patients. PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of radiofrequency therapy on the biophysical parameters and angiogenesis of facial skin, using CD34 as a biomarker in older diabetic women treated with metformin. PATIENTS AND METHODS: A total of 45 subjects with phototype 2 or

The efficacy and safety of non-pharmacological therapies for the treatment of acne vulgaris: A systematic review and best-evidence synthesis.

BACKGROUND: Acne vulgaris is a multifaceted skin disorder, affecting more than 85% of young individuals worldwide. Pharmacological therapy is not always desirable because of the development of antibiotic resistance or the potential risk of adverse effects. Non-pharmacological therapies can be viable alternatives for conventional therapies. However, sufficient evidence-based support in the efficacy and safety of non-pharmacological therapies is lacking. OBJECTIVE: To assess the efficacy and safety of several non-pharmacological therapies in the treatment of acne vulgaris. METHODS: A systemati

[Supraventricular tachycardias: mechanism, diagnosis and therapy].

Most of the paroxysmal forms of supraventricular tachycardia are reentry tachycardias in origin with either an AV-nodal reentry (AVNRT; approx. 50%) or an AV reentry circuit via accessory pathway (AVRT; approx. 30%) as the anatomical basis of tachycardia. The therapeutic options include either drug therapy or transcatheter radiofrequency ablation. In asymptomatic patients, where supra-ventricular tachycardia or WPW syndrome was documented incidentally, an expectative approach without therapy is usually recommended. However, if frequent tachycardia recurrences or severe clinical symptoms (synco

Chronic bilateral thalamic stimulation: a new therapeutic approach in intractable Tourette syndrome. Report of three cases.

Based on the results of thalamotomies described by Hassler in 1970, the authors performed bilateral thalamic high-frequency stimulation (HFS) in three patients with intractable Tourette syndrome (TS). In this report they describe the long-term effects. Three male patients (42, 28, and 45 years of age) had manifested motor and vocal tics since early childhood. The diagnosis of TS was made according to the criteria of the Tourette Syndrome Classification Study Group. Any drug or alternative treatment had been either ineffective or only temporarily effective in all three patients. There was no se

Radiofrequency procedures in chronic pain.

Radiofrequency current is simply a tool used for creating discrete thermal lesions in neural pathways in order to interrupt transmission. In pain medicine, radiofrequency lesions have been used to interrupt nociceptive pathways at various sites. This is a palliative treatment not without complications, so its use should be limited to those patients with cancer pain or chronic non-cancer pain for whom conservative non-surgical therapies have been ineffective or intolerable. With the development of alternatives such as intrathecal opioid infusion and neuromodulation technologies, the number of p

Radiofrequency Rejuvenation of the "Tweener" Patient: Under, Over, or Through the Skin.

The demand for noninvasive facial rejuvenation continues to increase as younger, well-informed patients enter the aesthetic market. We refer to a subset of these patients as "tweeners," those who present with early signs of neck and facial aging, but who have not yet developed changes significant enough to warrant a traditional excisional surgery approach. Many of these patients are in search of a minimally invasive intervention, a bridge in between observation and surgery. The authors describe their experience with radiofrequency (RF) technology as an in-office tool to address the aging face
