Immittance measures in individuals with Moebius Sequence.

UNLABELLED: Moebius Sequence has been described as a pathology which involves the VI and VII cranial nerves, causing facial palsy. Acoustic reflexes are elicited by a high intensity stimulation of the stapedius and the tensor tympani muscles. The VII cranial nerve is responsible for innervating the stapedius muscle. No acoustic reflexes are expected for individuals with this Sequence. AIM: To describe immittance findings in a series of individuals with Moebius Sequence. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We had 17 individuals with Moebius Sequence of both gender, with age raging from 3 to 13 years, who

Effect of stimulus duration on stapedius reflex threshold in electrical stimulation via cochlear implant.

The effect of stimulus duration on the threshold of the contralateral stapedius reflex was investigated in patients supplied with a Vienna cochlear implant (analog stimulation via CI) and compared to results of a normal-hearing reference group in case of acoustic stimulation. Changes in reflex threshold were determined at four frequencies (125, 500, 1,000 and 2,000 Hz in case of electrostimulation and at 500, 1,000, 2,000 and 4,000 Hz for acoustic stimulation) and for five durations (30, 50, 100, 300 and 500 ms). The comparison of the two stimulation modes was accomplished by using the same in

[Acoustic reflexometry in presbyacusis (author's transl)].

The authors have studied the relations between crossed and uncrossed acoustic stapedius reflex thresholds in presbyacusic subjects in order to verify whether ageing produces brain stem auditory lesions. The results showed in 55% of the presbyacusics a brain stem disorder characterized by the absence of one, several or all the acoustic reflexes; very often there was only an abnormal difference between crossed and uncrossed acoustic reflex thresholds.

Efferent auditory system: its effect on auditory processing.

UNLABELLED: Auditory processing depends on afferent and efferent auditory pathways integrity. The efferent auditory system may be assessed in humans by two non-invasive and objective methods: acoustic reflex and otoacoustic emissions suppression. AIM: Analyze the efferent auditory system activity by otoacoustic emission suppression and acoustic reflex sensitization in human subjects with auditory processing disorders. METHOD: Prospective study: fifty children with auditory processing disorders (study group) and thirty-eight children without auditory processing disorders (control group) were

The effects of aging on the stapedius reflex thresholds.

The acoustic reflex thresholds for broadband noise and 500-, 1000-, and 2000-Hz activating signals were measured in a group of young normal hearing adults and a group of elderly normal hearing subjects. The results indicated that the acoustic reflex thresholds for tonal activating signals in the young subjects were similar to those in the elderly subjects. However, the acoustic stapedius reflex thresholds for broadband noise activating signals is significantly higher in the elderly subjects than in the young. These differences were explained in light of Bredburg's findings [Acta Otolaryngol. S

Electrophysiological aspects of the middle ear muscle reflex in the rat: latency, rise time and effect on sound transmission.

The latency, the rise time and the influence of the acoustic reflex on sound transmission were investigated in the adult rat during ketamin anesthesia. This was done by recordings of the cochlear microphonics (CM) and electromyographic (EMG) recordings of the reflex responses of the tensor tympani muscle. The acoustic reflex was elicited by contralateral acoustic stimuli of which the intensity and frequency was varied. Ipsilaterally, the effect on sound transmission was determined by estimating the change in amplitude of the CM's of ipsilateral administered subliminal stimuli. It was shown tha

Stapedius reflex evoked in free sound field in cochlear implant users compared to normal-hearing listeners.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the relation between stapedius reflex thresholds in cochlear implant users evoked once through direct electric stimulation on single channels (ESRT) and once through acoustic stimulation in free sound field. For comparison, stapedius reflex thresholds were obtained in free sound field in a normal-hearing control group. DESIGN: For each participant a new ESRT-based fitting was created. Stapedius reflex thresholds were obtained for this new fitting in free sound field for different loudness adjustments. Acoustic stimuli for eliciting the stapedius reflex were narrow band

Middle ear impedance studies in elderly patients implications on age-related hearing loss.

INTRODUCTION: Controversies arise with respect to functioning of the middle ear over time. OBJECTIVE: To assess changes in middle ear impedance that may be related to aging, and/or if there was an association of these changes with those of the inner ear in the elderly patients. METHODS: Cross-sectional, comparative study of elderly patients managed in ear, nose and throat clinics. A structured questionnaire was administered to obtain clinical information. Pure tone audiometry, tympanometry, and acoustic reflexes were performed. Comparative analyses were performed to detect intergroup differe

Inner ear involvement in rheumatoid arthritis: a prospective clinical study.

Sensorineural hearing loss in rheumatoid arthritis (RA) has been reported to be the result of the extra-articular manifestation of the disease (rheumatoid nodular vasculitis) or due to drug ototoxicity. In an attempt to investigate the presence of sensorineural hearing loss and the possible causes for it we investigated prospectively 45 RA patients (42 female; three male) with a mean age of 52.5 +/- 10.7 years and a mean disease duration of 8.5 +/- 7.3 years. All patients underwent a complete physical examination and audiological evaluation which included pure tone audiometry and impedance aud

Static and dynamic acoustic impedance measurements in infant ears.

Tympanometry and acoustic reflex threshold data are reported for a series of presumable normal infants ranging in age from 55 to 132 days. In general, tympanograms displayed single peaks between +/- 50 mm H2O. Susceptance tympanograms with a 660-Hz probe frequency were sometimes characterized by monotonically increasing susceptance as ear canal pressure was changed from -200 to +200 mm H2O. Static values of acoustic conductance, susceptance, admittance, resistance, reactance, impedance, and phase angle were computed from tympanograms using the values of ambient and +200 mm H2O (0/+200 procedur

Nonacoustic stimulation of the middle ear muscle reflex.

The purpose of these experiments was to determine the incidence of the middle ear reflex in response to several nonacoustic (tactile and air jet) stimuli among subjects with normal hearing who had an acoustic reflex and selected patients with severe hearing loss. The results demonstrate that the incidence of response to tactile stimulation increases as the facial area stimulated approaches the auricle. The response to an air jet stimulus directed toward the eye is high; however, the clinical utility of the air jet may be limited because it often results in a startle reaction and head movement,

[The endonasopalpebral reflex].

The authors describe the endonasopalpebral reflex which is evoked from the nasal mucosa. Reduction of this reflex may be used as a fine index of involvement of the trigeminus in patients with acoustic neuromas. This makes it possible to differentiate this tumour at early stages of its development from neuritis of the acoustic nerve. This is of great importance for this pathological situation.

Superior canal dehiscence: review of a new condition.

A new cause of sound and pressure induced vertigo, superior canal dehisence, is described. Auditory manifestations include hyperacusis to bone-conducted sounds and conductive hearing loss with normal acoustic reflexes. The diagnosis is reached by a directed history, documentation of upward and torsional nystagmus evoked by sound and pressure, and radiology. Acoustic reflexes and VEMP (vestibular evoked myogenic potentials) aid in the identification of patients with an apparent conductive loss with normal acoustic reflexes or have an asymptomatic dehiscense on radiology. Treatment involves avoi

[The human stapedius reflex by ipsilateral electrical stimulation of the auditory meatal skin (author's transl)].

A modified method for eliciting a stapedius reflex by electrical stimulation of the meatal skin is presented. In contrast to the acoustically elicited stapedius reflex, the electrically-induced response is only ipsilateral, and can be ablated by anesthesia of the meatal skin. Contralateral acoustical and ipsilateral electrical stimulations lead to a summation effect of the amplitude off the stapedius reflex. When presented simultaneously, subthreshold electrical and acoustical stimulations may produce a reflectory contraction of the stapedius muscle. Similar responses can be found in diseases

Brainstem plasticity and modified loudness following short-term use of hearing aids.

Previous research has shown that the threshold of the middle ear acoustic reflex is modified in adult listeners following 1 week of continuous monaural sensory deprivation [Munro and Blount, J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 126, 568-571 (2009)]. The results of the present study provide evidence of plasticity in the brainstem of adult listeners following monaural auditory stimulation. Acoustic reflexes were obtained at a higher sound pressure level in the ear that had been fitted with a low-gain hearing aid for 5 days. These changes are in the opposite direction to those reported after sensory deprivation a
