Accommodation lags are higher in myopia than in emmetropia: Measurement methods and metrics matter.

PURPOSE: To determine whether accommodative errors in emmetropes and myopes are systematically different, and the effect of using different instruments and metrics. METHODS: Seventy-six adults aged 18-27 years comprising 24 emmetropes (spherical equivalent refraction of the dominant eye +0.04 ± 0.03 D) and 52 myopes (-2.73 ± 0.22 D) were included. Accommodation responses were measured with a Grand Seiko WAM-5500 and a Hartmann-Shack Complete Ophthalmic Analysis System aberrometer, using pupil plane (Zernike and Seidel refraction) and retinal image plane (neural sharpness-NS; and visual Strehl

[Near heterophoria with a description of the heterometer].

The examination of near heterophoria with a heterometer using a large series of test plates presented "free-sighted" (i.e., not hindered by optical or mechanical means) enables a more comprehensive analysis to be made than has so far been achieved with other instruments. The principal components of the instruments are an angle mirror and various test panels. The selection of test panels currently available should be developed further. However, comparison with other instruments for examining near heterophoria justifies the conclusion that heterophoria or nearsightedness due to errors of refract

Association Between Ocular Dominance and Anisometropic Hyperopia.

INTRODUCTION AND PURPOSE: Anisometropia, a relative difference in the refractive state of the two eyes, is common in hyperopic patients. We investigated the association between ocular dominance (sighting dominance) and refractive asymmetry in patients with hyperopia. METHODS: This retrospective study included 223 hyperopic patients with a mean age of 10.1 ± 3.6 years (range 3 to 21 years). Refractive error was measured with cycloplegic refraction, and axial length was measured with IOLMaster® (Carl Zeiss Meditec, Dublin, CA). Ocular dominance was assessed with the hole-in-the-card test. The a

[Research progress on the application of specially lense related to myopia prevention and control].

In order to decelerate the growth of myopia in children and adolescents and reduce the risks of associated eye complications, extensive research has been conducted on preventive measures, including optical, behavioral, and pharmaceutical interventions. Spectacle lenses, due to their safety, convenience, and high patient compliance, stand out as the most common method for correcting refractive errors compared to other interventions. As far as we know, various forms of spectacle lenses are currently used in clinical practice, including bifocal lenses, progressive multifocal lenses, peripheral de

Effect of Correcting Peripheral Refractive Errors on Retinal Sensitivity in Younger and Older Healthy Adults.

SIGNIFICANCE: Retinal sensitivity decreases with age and age-related eye diseases. Peripheral retinal sensitivity may also be compromised if the refractive correction is not optimized for peripheral vision. PURPOSE: This study aimed to determine the impact of using a peripheral refractive correction on perimetric thresholds and the influence of age and spherical equivalent on this impact. METHODS: We measured, in 10 younger (20 to 30 years) and 10 older (58 to 72 years) healthy subjects, perimetric thresholds for Goldmann size III stimulus in several test locations along the horizontal merid

Refractive errors occurring with tilt of intraocular lenses.

A thin lens technique was developed to determine how the effective powers of toric monofocal intraocular lenses (IOLs) are influenced by tilt and the refractive errors associated with the tilt. A series of steps determined the effective power of the cornea at the IOL, the IOL power, the effective power of the tilted IOL, the correction required at the front of the eye and the power of an IOL that would compensate for the tilt. The correction was determined by starting at the ideal reduced image vergence at the IOL, backwards raytracing to obtain a reduced image vergence at the cornea, and subt

Dry Eye Disease as a Cause of Refractive Errors After Cataract Surgery - A Systematic Review.

Dry eye disease (DED) is a multifactorial ocular surface disorder characterized by loss of tear film homeostasis with associated ocular symptoms, like dryness, foreign body sensation, and inflammation. Numerous reports confirm an increase in dry eye symptoms after cataract surgery. DED also significantly disturbs preoperative biometric measurements, mainly by changes in keratometry measurements. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effect of DED on biometric measurements before cataract surgery and postoperative refractive errors. PubMed database was searched for keywords: cataract sur

The role of cGMP in ocular growth and the development of form-deprivation myopia in guinea pigs.

PURPOSE: Development of myopia is associated with remodeling of the sclera, a tissue composed principally of collagen. Cyclic guanosine monophosphate (cGMP) regulates collagen synthesis in several organs; therefore, we investigated the effects of soluble guanylyl cyclase (sGC) stimulation and inhibition on refraction and ocular growth in guinea pigs under normal and form-deprived (FD) conditions. METHODS: Retinal and scleral cGMP concentrations were measured in normal and monocularly FD guinea pigs at 2 days, 1 week, and 2 weeks of form deprivation and following 2 days recovery.
