Neural mechanism underlying depressive-like state associated with social status loss.

Downward social mobility is a well-known mental risk factor for depression, but its neural mechanism remains elusive. Here, by forcing mice to lose against their subordinates in a non-violent social contest, we lower their social ranks stably and induce depressive-like behaviors. These rank-decline-associated depressive-like behaviors can be reversed by regaining social status. In vivo fiber photometry and single-unit electrophysiological recording show that forced loss, but not natural loss, generates negative reward prediction error (RPE). Through the lateral hypothalamus, the RPE strongly a

Using data science to improve outcomes for persons with opioid use disorder.

Medication treatment for opioid use disorder (MOUD) is an effective evidence-based therapy for decreasing opioid-related adverse outcomes. Effective strategies for retaining persons on MOUD, an essential step to improving outcomes, are needed as roughly half of all persons initiating MOUD discontinue within a year. Data science may be valuable and promising for improving MOUD retention by using "big data" (e.g., electronic health record data, claims data mobile/sensor data, social media data) and specific machine learning techniques (e.g., predictive modeling, natural language processing, rein

[Drug policies in the Brazilian context: an intersectional analysis of "Cracolândia" in São Paulo, Brazil].

From the analysis of a specific conjuncture, "Cracolândia" in São Paulo, Brazil, and the "De Braços Abertos" program, this article discusses the complex relationships between drug use and the formulation of public policies directed to the care of users. In methodological terms, this work is based on the qualitative research by using semi-structured interviews with thirteen key informants. The empirical material was analyzed from the content thematic analysis and the intersectionality perspective, especially from the theoretical contributions of the "difference" category. The results point out

Conducting In-Home Functional Analyses of Aggression and Self-Injury Exhibited by Boys with Fragile X Syndrome.

OBJECTIVE: Boys with fragile X syndrome (FXS) are at increased risk for exhibiting aggression and self-injury that can be extremely disruptive to families. Few studies, however, have examined the extent to which social-environmental factors can influence these behaviors, particularly in home settings. METHODS: Caregivers of 32 boys with FXS, aged 3 to 10 years, were coached by a board-certified behavior analyst to implement a functional analysis (FA) with their child in their home over 2 days. The functions identified in the FAs were validated by behavioral interventions conducted through tel

The development of psychopathy.

The current review focuses on the construct of psychopathy, conceptualized as a clinical entity that is fundamentally distinct from a heterogeneous collection of syndromes encompassed by the term 'conduct disorder'. We will provide an account of the development of psychopathy at multiple levels: ultimate causal (the genetic or social primary cause), molecular, neural, cognitive and behavioral. The following main claims will be made: (1) that there is a stronger genetic as opposed to social ultimate cause to this disorder. The types of social causes proposed (e.g., childhood sexual/physical abu

Evaluating the role of contingency in differentially reinforced tic suppression.

The current study evaluated the effects of tokens delivered on differential reinforcement of zero-rate behavior (DRO) schedules or noncontingently on tic suppression in 4 children with tics. Tic frequency was lower in 3 of 4 children when tokens were delivered contingent on the absence of tics than when tokens were delivered noncontingently.

Food deprivation and food-delay effects on the development of adjunctive drinking.

Twelve rats were food-deprived to 90% or 70% of their free-feeding weights. Food pellets were then delivered every 60 s (Fixed Time 60-s schedule), and the development of adjunctive drinking was measured by the water consumed and the number of licks. For "master" rats, each lick was followed by 10-s delays in food delivery. Yoked control rats received food at the same time as their master rats and independently of their own behavior. At 70% deprivation, both master and control rats developed similar levels of schedule-induced licking, but the master rats drank less water. At 90% deprivation, m

Inadequate early social experience increases the incentive salience of reward-related cues in adulthood.

The mechanisms by which childhood abuse and/or neglect become risk factors for the development of drug addiction, problem gambling, and other disorders of behavioral inhibition are unknown. The loss of behavioral inhibition is often triggered by reward-related cues that acquire incentive salience. This study examined whether inadequate early-life social experience in rats affects the incentive salience of reward-related cues. Rats were deprived of early-life social experience with the mother and litter through artificial-rearing (AR). A group of AR rats (AR+STM) received additional tactile sti

Cognitive Functioning in Rural Older Adults: The Mediating Role of Perceived Social Support.

Background: Aging is a multidimensional process influenced by biological, psychological, and social factors. Social support contributes to cognitive reserve by reducing stress, promoting mental engagement, and reinforcing a sense of belonging. Objective: To examine the association between perceived social support and cognitive functioning among older adults, and to investigate whether social support mediates the relationship between living arrangements and cognitive performance. Methods: The sample included 265 older adults aged 65 years and above, recruited using snowball sampling between Mar

A mu-opioid feedback model of human social behavior.

Since the discovery of pain relieving and rewarding properties of opiates such as morphine or heroin, the human mu-opioid system has been a target for medical research on pain processing and addiction. Indeed, pain and pleasure act mutually inhibitory on each other and the mu-opioid system has been suggested as an underlying common neurobiological mechanism. Recently, research interest extended the role of the endogenous mu-opioid system beyond the hedonic value of pain and pleasure towards human social-emotional behavior. Here we propose a mu-opioid feedback model of social behavior. This mod

LGBTQ+ Young Adults on the Street and on Campus: Identity as a Product of Social Context.

Lesbian, gay, bisexual, queer, and other sexual and gender minority (LGBTQ+) young adults face unique identity-related experiences based on their immersion in distinctive social contexts. The predominant framework of performing separate analyses on samples of LGBTQ+ young people by their primary social status obfuscates more holistic understandings of the role of social context. Using 46 in-depth interviews with LGBTQ+ college students and LGBTQ+ homeless young adults, we ask: How are LGBTQ+ young adults' capacities for "doing" their gender and sexual identities shaped by their distinctive soc

Alcohol use severity among Hispanic college students: examining social media discrimination, drinking motives, and resilience in a stress and coping framework.

Background: Exposure to racial and ethnic discrimination (RED) is positively associated with alcohol-related outcomes among Hispanics; however, links between RED and alcohol use are poorly understood, particularly when considering RED in social media. Objectives: Study aimed to (1) examine the direct and indirect associations between RED on social media and alcohol use severity (i.e., AUDIT total score) via coping drinking motives (a form of negative reinforcement in which an individual uses alcohol to alleviate/regulate negative emotions) among Hispanic emerging adult college students, and (2)

Social defeat stress in rats: escalation of cocaine and "speedball" binge self-administration, but not heroin.

RATIONALE: Exposure to intermittent episodes of social defeat stress can increase drug seeking and leads to intense drug taking in rats. OBJECTIVES: This study investigated the consequences of repeated, intermittent social defeat stress on patterns of drug self-administration in rats with access to heroin, cocaine, or a heroin-cocaine combination ("speedball"). METHODS: Male Long-Evans rats were either handled (controls) or subjected to 25-min social defeat stress episodes on days 1, 4, 7, and 10 during confrontations with an aggressive resident. Ten days following the last defeat, rats were

Family burden in long-term diseases: a comparative study in schizophrenia vs. physical disorders.

This study explored burden and social networks in families of patients with schizophrenia or a long-term physical disease. It was carried out in 169 specialised units (mental health department, and units for the treatment of chronic heart, brain, diabetes, kidney, lung diseases) recruited in 30 randomly selected geographic areas of Italy. The study sample consisted of 709 key relatives of patients with a DSM-IV diagnosis of schizophrenia and 646 key relatives of patients with physical diseases. Each relative was asked to fill in the Family Problems Questionnaire (FPQ) and the Social Network Qu

Sun Tattoos and Social Media: A Behavioral Dermatology Perspective on Emerging Photodamage Trends.

Sun tattoos, also referred to as patterned sunburn lines, have recently emerged as a visible consequence of uneven ultraviolet (UV) exposure, increasingly shared on social media platforms, particularly by adolescents and young adults. These patterns arise from partial photoprotection by clothing, accessories, or stickers and reflect acute UV-induced inflammation and DNA damage. Although often trivialized or aestheticized online, repeated sunburns contribute to cumulative photodamage, photoaging, pigmentary disorders, and increased risk of skin cancer. This commentary examines sun tattoo lines

"Be the Dream Queen": Gender Performativity, Femininity, and Transgender Sex Workers in China.

An under-researched aspect of transgender sex workers in China pertains to their desires and expressions of femininity. Male-to-Female (MTF) transgender sex workers are a high-risk population prone to depression and stress regarding body image, intimate relationships marked by violence, and social stigma, rendering them vulnerable to hate crimes and discrimination. Ethnographic data from in-depth interviews with 49 MTF transgender sex workers indicate that sex, gender and feminine desire are mutable in the construction of self and subjectivity. This study uses the conceptual framework of gende

Communication Strategies Within the Mental Health Context-The Evidence for Nurses, Midwives, and Social Workers. A Rapid Review.

Effective communication in mental health settings is central to compassionate, ethical, and person-centred care. For nurses, midwives, and social workers, communication underpins trust, assessment accuracy, and recovery-oriented practice. This rapid review explored evidence-based communication strategies used by these disciplines within adult mental health contexts. Following PRISMA-ScR and JBI methodology, 18 studies published between 2015 and 2025 were analysed. Study quality was assessed using the Mixed Methods Assessment Tool. Three overarching themes emerged: professional mechanisms (refl

Optimization of dynamic incentive strategies for public transportation based on reinforcement learning and network synergy effect.

Aiming at the challenges of peak passenger congestion, user behavior heterogeneity and insufficient network synergy faced by public transportation systems in urbanization, this study proposed the Dynamic Incentive Strategy-Heterogeneous Response Synergy Model (DIS-HARM). The model integrated reinforcement learning, user heterogeneity modeling and small-world network synergy mechanism, adjusted the carbon credit intensity in real time by dynamic incentive generator, quantified the diminishing marginal utility effect of incentives for high-income groups by combining elastic user identifiers, and

Can children with autism recover? If so, how?

Although Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) are generally assumed to be lifelong, we review evidence that between 3% and 25% of children reportedly lose their ASD diagnosis and enter the normal range of cognitive, adaptive and social skills. Predictors of recovery include relatively high intelligence, receptive language, verbal and motor imitation, and motor development, but not overall symptom severity. Earlier age of diagnosis and treatment, and a diagnosis of Pervasive Developmental Disorder-Not Otherwise Specified are also favorable signs. The presence of seizures, mental retardation and gene
