Ethical and religious dilemmas of modern reproductive choices and the Islamic perspective.

Advances in the field of Assisted Reproductive Technologies (ART) are constantly evolving, starting from Artificial Insemination (AI) and in-vitro fertilization (IVF), to the current state of the art technologies that enable embryo biopsy for Pre-implantation Genetic Testing (PGT). The future includes gene mapping and DNA replacement technologies with the potential for the so-called "designer babies." In other words, shortly, a modern couple may be in a position to decide how to procreate and with whom; which pregnancy to keep and which one to terminate depending on their prior knowledge about

Voluntary and involuntary motor behaviours in the varieties of religious experience.

Religion is a widespread feature of human life. Religions typically include both distinctive varieties of experience and also a set of foundational beliefs. An additional, but often overlooked, part of many religions is their expression through specific actions, which we here designate religious motor behaviours. Here we describe these religious motor behaviours and offer a taxonomy based on the conceptual schemes of movement neuroscience and neurology. Thus, religious rituals include both behaviours characterized by decreased motor output (e.g. ritualistic silence) and behaviours characterize

INTRODUCTION: Over the past decade, there has been a growing focus on the study of how religion and technology intersect, particularly within the field of digital religion studies. In recent years, digital religious activities have emerged on Chinese social media platforms, with the sharing and promotion of content related to religious activities becoming increasingly popular. In a country like China, which adheres to atheistic ideology, the emergence of religious activities among the Generation Z youth provides a unique case for academic research. However, there is very limited research on di

Epidemiology of breast cancer in a screened population.

Breast cancer risk factors were examined in a screened population expected to exhibit selection bias. Data were obtained for 1,383 breast cancer cases and 2,543 randomly selected controls screened at the Guttman Breast Diagnostic Institute between 1968 and 1979. Relative risk (RR) estimates were found to be elevated for the usual factors: greater age, greater weight, early menarche, late first live birth or nulliparity, late menopause, and family history of breast cancer. Adjustment for screening variables (number of screenings, breast symptomatology, and year of first screening) removed subst

The unwritten history of medical treatment: Evidence for ritual-healers and their activities in the pre-literate past.

OBJECTIVE: To reveal the presence and activities of healers from funerary contexts. MATERIALS: Ethnohistoric and ethnographic textual descriptions and the bioarchaeological record. METHODS: A synthesis of human remains, grave contexts, and funerary objects. Supernatural explanations across 114 societies are more common for natural than social phenomena.

Humans across the globe use supernatural beliefs to explain the world around them. This article explores whether cultural groups invoke the supernatural more to explain natural phenomena (for example, storms, disease outbreaks) or social phenomena (for example, murder, warfare). Quantitative analysis of ethnographic text across 114 geographically and culturally diverse societies found that supernatural explanations are more prevalent for natural than for social phenomena, consistent with theories that ground the origin of religious belief in a human tendency to perceive intent and agency in th

Invited Commentary: Explaining the Relationship Between Attending Worship Services and Mortality-A Brief Excursion Into the Contribution of Social Relationships in Religious Institutions.

In this issue of the Journal, VanderWeele et al. (Am J Epidemiol. 2017;000(00):000-000) report that more frequent attendance at worship services is associated with a lower mortality risk. However, the underlying processes that might explain this relationship were not discussed fully. A problem arises because the potentially beneficial association between attending worship services and mortality risk may be due to a number of different factors. At least part of the explanation may be found by turning to social relationships that arise in religious institutions. Within this context, there are po

Kendrick v. Bowen, 15 April 1987, modified on 15 May 1987.

The plaintiffs, federal taxpayers, challenged the constitutionality of the Adolescent Family Life Act, 42 U.S.C. Sections 300z-300z-10 (1981), provisions of which allow religious organizations to use government funds for, among other things, the counseling and teaching of adolescents on matters related to premarital sexual relations and teenage pregnancy. They claimed that these provisions violated the Establishment Clause of the First Amendment, which provides that "Congress shall make no law respecting the establishment of religion." While the Court held that the Act had a valid secular purp
