Free-Roaming Cat (Felis Catus) Management and Welfare Policies in Two University Campuses in Beirut, Lebanon: Strengths, Weaknesses, and Opportunities.

Little information has been reported about the welfare and management of free-roaming animals in Middle Eastern countries. Here we describe a case study of free-roaming cat (Felis catus) management policies in two universities in Beirut, Lebanon whereby cats are immensely valued for their presence and the benefits they bring to students and employees. Guided by concern for animal welfare, the innovative, humane approaches by the universities include arranging adoptions, discouraging pet abandonment, food provision, health monitoring, nurturing a social responsibility consciousness among young

Intersection between access difficulties and obstetric violence in abortion itineraries.

In Brazil, several limitations are imposed upon the access of women undergoing abortion to the healthcare network, primarily caused by the i … l professional attitudes. The results point to the urgency of implementing public policies in which reproductive rights are as effective as human rights.

Official development assistance: from dependency to sustainability.

Shifting geopolitical policies, competing priorities and declines in national economies have lately led to a decrease in foreign aid from various donor countries with implications for multilateral agencies. This sharp fall in official development assistance threatens the attainment of sustainable development goals, especially as pertaining to sexual and reproductive health and rights across the global south. International concerns have led to calls for innovative partnerships, alternative resource mobilisation, and stronger community engagement. This challenge offers opportunities for both gov

Where did we go wrong? Recruitment challenges in exploring LGBTIQA+ experiences following miscarriage.

This editorial examines recruitment challenges during a qualitative study on LGBTIQA+ experiences of miscarriage. Despite targeted outreach, engagement was low, prompting reflection on broader barriers. We suggest four key factors: systemic discrimination in medicine and law; the small number of LGBTIQA+ people who have pursued conception and experienced miscarriage; increasing hostility toward LGBTIQA+ communities; and the psychosocial sensitivity of the topic. These challenges reflect wider patterns of exclusion from reproductive health and research. We argue for academic advocacy to address

The legal status of embryos and implications for reproductive technologies and biotechnology research.

The legal status of embryos in American law is changing. At present, most states do not afford embryos the same protections as a born person, but some states are attempting to change this standard. Granting embryos the same legal status as born human beings poses a significant problem for industries that work with embryos, especially fertility treatment facilities and scientists researching stem cell and gene therapy technologies. This paper describes the methods of defining embryos in American law, and discusses the implications of granting embryos the same rights as born persons for the repr

Borders, bodies, and barriers: Legal vulnerabilities and reproductive health challenges of Afghan women immigrants in the host society of Pakistan.

The study aimed to investigate the influence of legal status on reproductive health service availability for Afghan women immigrants and their adopted coping methods with obstacles. The study employed a qualitative design utilizing narrative in-depth interviews with twelve undocumented Afghan women, supplemented by five key informant interviews and field observations. The study findings revealed that legal uncertainty, along with cultural constraints, act as the main factor preventing undocumented women from accessing public healthcare facilities through their inability to present Proof of Reg

Fertility concerns among people living with HIV: a systematic review and meta-synthesis.

This meta-synthesis systematically reviewed qualitative studies on fertility concerns among people living with HIV (PLWH) to inform targeted interventions. A systematic search of PubMed, Web of Science, CINAHL, Cochrane, and Embase was conducted from inception to October 15, 2025. Synthesizing 76 extracted themes from 18 studies revealed 11 subthemes organized into three overarching dimensions: biological (fear of transmission, health decline), psychological (shock, chronic distress, internalized stigma, reproductive ambivalence), and social (externalized stigma, economic constraints, policy/n

Self-care provision of contraception: Evidence and insights from contraceptive injectable self-administration.

As new reproductive health products become available, women increasingly want to take a participatory role in their health. New developments and formulations of contraceptive products provide an opportunity to support this evolving trend toward self-care. Self-care, as defined by the World Health Organization (WHO), highlights the ability of individuals to promote health, prevent disease, and manage their own health with or without the support of a health care provider. The recently released WHO Guidelines on Self-Care Interventions for Health: Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights include

Strategies and considerations for distributing and recovering mouse lines.

As more and more genetically modified mouse lines are being generated, it becomes increasingly common to share animal models among different research institutions. Live mice are routinely transferred between animal facilities. Due to various issues concerning animal welfare, intellectual property rights, colony health status and biohazard, significant paperwork and coordination are required before any animal travel can take place. Shipping fresh or frozen preimplantation embryos, gametes, or reproductive organs can bypass some of the issues associated with live animal transfer, but it requires

Classroom Debate as a Pedagogical Method to Explore the Relationship Between the Medical System and Patient Community Members.

There are multiple complexities within the practice of medicine wherein the vantage of the medical community might be limited or in direct conflict with the vantage of a patient population. Reproductive justice (RJ) is a framework developed from the vantage of Black women's health activists to identify and address inequitable reproductive health outcomes, consider the intersection of reproductive rights and social justice, and center the experiences of historically marginalized communities. Using the contemporary example of the federal Medicaid Sterilization Form, we highlight how the pedagogy…

FIGIJ Advocacy Statement on Climate Change.

Climate change is an escalating global crisis that disproportionately threatens the health and rights of children and adolescents, with girls facing particularly heightened vulnerability. Increasing temperatures, extreme weather events, food and water insecurity, and exposure to environmental toxins directly and indirectly affect sexual and reproductive health. These impacts include altered timing of menarche, worsened dysmenorrhea, increased risks of subfertility and pregnancy complications, and reduced access to essential reproductive health services. Broader climate-related instability furt

Legal challenges in expanding the provider base for abortion in Asia.

In Asia as elsewhere, strict regulations on who is authorized to provide abortion services and to prescribe or dispense medical abortion adversely impact access, especially for marginalized persons and residents in remote areas. The WHO's 2022 Abortion Care Guideline provides an important framework for states to formulate and implement policies to serve sexual and reproductive rights of access to abortion services. The Guideline calls for decriminalization of abortion services to increase authorization to provide abortion services and to promote self-managed medical abortion. This review exami…

Best Practice Contraception Care for Women with Obesity: A Review of Current Evidence.

The prevalence of obesity among females of reproductive age is increasing globally. Access to the complete range of appropriate contraceptive options is essential for upholding the reproductive rights of this population group. People with obesity can experience stigma and discrimination when seeking healthcare, and despite limited evidence for provider bias in the context of contraception, awareness for its potential at an individual provider and health systems level is essential. While use of some hormonal contraceptives may be restricted due to increased health risks in people with obesity, …

Feminism, biomedicine and the 'reproductive destiny' of women in clinical texts on the birth control pill.

The birth control pill is one of the most popular forms of contraception in North America and has been a key player in women's rights activism for over 50 years. In this paper, I conduct a feminist deconstructive analysis of 12 biomedical texts on the birth control pill, published between 1965 and 2016. This study is situated amongst the feminist scholarship that challenges the representation of women's bodies in biomedicine. Findings suggest that clinical texts on the birth control pill continue to universalise women's lives and experiences, and essentialise them based on their reproductive c

Abortion and contraception: attitudes of South african university students.

Despite the availability of contraception, the rates of abortion among young women in South Africa continue to increase. We designed a study to examine young people's attitudes about abortion and contraception. One hundred and eighty-eight South African university students (97 females and 91 males) completed the survey. While we found moral objections to abortion for the sample as a whole, females showed stronger support for availability of abortion and women's autonomy compared with males. The respondents acknowledged the importance of contraception at a personal and general level, but more t
