Neighborhood material deprivation and days at home after glioblastoma diagnosis.

PURPOSE: To examine the association between neighborhood material deprivation and days at home (DAH) after glioblastoma diagnosis. METHODS: This population-based retrospective cohort study used linked administrative data from Ontario, Canada, for adults diagnosed with glioblastoma during 2003-2023. Material deprivation was assigned using Ontario Marginalization Index quintiles (Q1, least deprived; Q5, most deprived). The primary outcome was DAH within 365 days, defined as days alive outside acute hospitals, inpatient rehabilitation, and continuing or complex care. The primary analysis include

Does Housing Eviction Modify the Effects of Alcohol Outlet Density on Hospitalizations for Assault and Alcohol Use Disorder in Pennsylvania?

BACKGROUND: Examining how the relationship between alcohol outlet density and alcohol-related harms may vary by neighborhood-level factors is important for informing the evaluation and implementation of environmental alcohol interventions and identifying other community conditions that can be modified to reduce alcohol-related harms and inequities. This study aims to extend prior research by testing whether housing eviction-a cause of housing insecurity and neighborhood destabilization-modifies the impact of alcohol outlet density on hospitalizations for assault and alcohol use disorder (AUD)

Depression and Crime Across Different Neighborhoods in the Swedish General Population.

IMPORTANCE: Depression and factors reflecting neighborhood social structure (ie, socioeconomic deprivation, ethnic heterogeneity, residential mobility, and urbanicity) have each been linked to criminal convictions. However, how the association between depression and crime varies across different neighborhood types, and the extent to which it reflects unmeasured familial confounding, remains unclear. OBJECTIVE: To examine whether the association between depression and violent and nonviolent criminal convictions varies across neighborhood types, and to assess the extent to which unmeasured fami

Neighborhood Hostility is Associated With the Relationship Between Park Proximity and Physical Activity Among Youth: National Evidence From Chile.

PURPOSE: Physical inactivity among youth is highly prevalent worldwide. Although proximity to parks and recreational facilities is generally associated with higher physical activity (PA), unsafe or hostile neighborhood environments may limit their use. This study examined whether neighborhood hostility moderates the association between access to recreational facilities and adherence to World Health Organization PA guidelines among Chilean youth. METHODS: This cross-sectional study analyzed data from the 2024 National Physical Activity and Sport Survey of Chile, including 3,477 urban participa

Pavements to Longevity: The Influence of Neighborhood Walkability on Mortality in Taiwan.

BACKGROUND: There is limited information on the association between walkability and health in Asian countries. OBJECTIVE: Our study aimed to investigate the association between neighborhood walkability and mortality in Taiwanese adults. METHODS: We selected 457,874 participants (≥18 y of age) from Taiwan who joined a standard medical examination program between 1998 and 2016 and followed them until 31 July 2021. Three walkability measures were estimated within a walking distance of 640m of participant's addresses: points of interest (POI), transit stations, and impedance (restrictions to wal

The Fall of Violence and the Reconfiguration of Urban Neighborhoods.

Over the past few decades, U.S. cities have changed dramatically, largely because of two major trends: the fall of violence and the rise of urban inequality. Despite the attention given to each of these trends, little research has assessed how they are related to each other. This study is the first to generate causal evidence on the impact of violent crime on economic residential segregation. We document the effect of the crime drop on economic segregation in 500 U.S. cities between 1990 and 2010, using exogenous shocks to city crime rates to identify causal effects. We find that declining vio

Neighborhood Deprivation and Adolescent Mental Health: The Protective Role of School Staffing Patterns.

OBJECTIVE: Schools are key for advancing adolescent well-being, yet the role of school-level factors in supporting student mental health in the context of neighborhood deprivation is unknown. METHOD: Students (N = 30,469, age: mean = 15.11 years, SD = 1.75 years) in 62 middle and high schools in Massachusetts completed the Substance Use and Risk Factors (SURF) Survey to assess psychiatric symptoms. Neighborhood deprivation was assessed through the census-extracted Area Deprivation Index (ADI). School-level moderators included school staffing patterns (teacher and mental health staff-to-studen

Sociodemographic characteristics and functional health among Thai older adults in skipped generation households.

A substantial number of skipped generation households (SGHHs), where grandparents live with grandchildren in the absence of the middle generation, is observed in Thailand. The functional health (FH) of older adults with SGHHs is a concern because many of them take care of their grandchildren. While some studies have indicated the socioeconomic vulnerabilities of SGHHs, a social value on intergenerational exchange is considered favourable to SGHHs. This study examined the FH of older adults in SGHHs in comparison with those in other living arrangements, after adjusting for sociodemographic vari

Neighborhood evictions, household children, and preterm birth among Black birthing people.

BACKGROUND: Neighborhood evictions are a key component of community-level housing instability and disproportionately impact communities of color. Increased neighborhood evictions may be associated with increased preterm birth (PTB). Previous research suggests familial distress as a potential driver of increased PTB among Black birthing parents exposed to high neighborhood eviction rates. In this study, we explore whether the association of neighborhood evictions with PTB differs depending on the presence or absence of children in the household during pregnancy. METHODS: We used information fr

Spatial-Temporal Patterns in the Enteric Pathogen Contamination of Soil in the Public Environments of Low- and Middle-Income Neighborhoods in Nairobi, Kenya.

Public spaces in countries with limited societal development can be contaminated with feces containing pathogenic microbes from animals and people. Data on contamination levels, spatial distribution, and the diversity of enteric pathogens in the public settings of low- and middle-income neighborhoods are crucial for devising strategies that minimize the enteric infection burden. The objective of this study was to compare spatial-temporal differences in the detection rate and diversity of enteric pathogens in the public spaces of low- and middle-income neighborhoods of Nairobi, Kenya. A Systematic Review of Areal Units and Adjacency Used in Bayesian Spatial and Spatio-Temporal Conditional Autoregressive Models in Health Research.

Advancements in Bayesian spatial and spatio-temporal modelling have been observed in recent years. Despite this, there are unresolved issues about the choice of appropriate spatial unit and adjacency matrix in disease mapping. There is limited systematic review evidence on this topic. This review aimed to address these problems. We searched seven databases to find published articles on this topic. A modified quality assessment tool was used to assess the quality of studies. A total of 52 studies were included, of which 26 (50.0%) were on infectious diseases, 10 (19.2%) on chronic diseases, 8 (

Measuring The Enduring Imprint Of Structural Racism On American Neighborhoods.

A long history of discriminatory policies in the United States has created disparities in neighborhood resources that shape ethnoracial health inequities today. To quantify these differences, we organized publicly available data on forty-two variables at the census tract level within nine domains affected by structural racism: built environment, criminal justice, education, employment, housing, income and poverty, social cohesion, transportation, and wealth. Using data from multiple sources at several levels of geography, we developed scores in each domain, as well as a summary score that we c

The Changing Landscape of Food Deserts and Swamps over More than a Decade in Flanders, Belgium.

Food deserts and swamps have previously been mostly studied in Anglo-Saxon countries such as the USA and Great Britain. This research is one of the first studies to map food deserts and swamps in a mainland European, densely populated but heavily fragmented region such as Flanders. The evolution of food deserts and swamps between 2008 and 2020 was assessed. Special focus was given to areas where high numbers of elderly, young people and/or families with low income live. Food deserts were calculated based on supermarket access within 1000 m and bus stop availability, while food swamps were calc

Longitudinal neighbourhood determinants with cognitive health and dementia disparities: protocol of the Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis Neighborhoods and Aging prospective cohort study.

INTRODUCTION: The burden of Alzheimer's disease (AD) and AD-related dementias (ADRD) is increasing nationally and globally, with disproportionate impacts on lower-income, lower education and systematically marginalised older adults. Presence of inequalities in neighbourhood factors (eg, social context, physical and built environments) may affect risk of cognitive decline and be key for intervening on AD/ADRD disparities at the population level. However, existing studies are limited by a dearth of longitudinal, detailed neighbourhood measures linked to rich, prospective cohort data. Our main ob

"I'm definitely not socially excluded!"- Perceptions of social exclusion among Australian government housing residents aged 80 and older who live alone.

The oldest old - those aged 80 years and over - are the fastest growing sector of the Australian population and are generally assumed to be at risk of social exclusion which impedes healthy aging. The voices of those thought to be vulnerable to social exclusion are seldom heard. Informed by a critical gerontology framework, socio-ecological model of health and life-course perspectives, this research involved semi-structured in-depth interviews with a purposive sample of 13 people aged 80 and older living alone in government housing, in a socio-economically disadvantaged neighborhood in Melbour

Examining the relationship of sociodemographic factors, neighborhood cohesion and abnormal sleep duration among U.S. foreign-born subpopulations in the National Health Interview Survey.

BACKGROUND: Limited studies have examined the relationship of neighborhood cohesion and sleep duration between U.S. foreign-born Hispanics/Latinos and non-Hispanics/Latinos. METHODS: We conducted a multinomial logistic regression using the 2013-2018 National Health Interview Survey on U.S. foreign-born adults ≥18 (N = 27,253). The outcome variable, sleep duration, was categorized as short sleep (≤6 hours), normal sleep (7 to 8 hours), and long sleep (≥9 hours). Neighborhood cohesion was categorized using tertiles (low, medium, high) from self-reported Likert scores. Our model included sociode

Non-Linear Effects of the Built Environment and Social Environment on Bus Use among Older Adults in China: An Application of the XGBoost Model.

Global aging has raised increasing concerns on the health and well-being of older adults. Public transport is a viable option to improve the mobility and quality of life among older adults. However, policies that promote the public transport use among older adults are rare. This study utilizes the eXtreme Gradient Boosting (XGBoost) decision tree to explore the non-linear associations of the built and social environment with bus use among older adults in China. The bus use of older adults was obtained from the Zhongshan Household Travel Survey (ZHTS) in 2012. Results show that non-linear relat

Nonlinear Associations of the Built Environment with Cycling Frequency among Older Adults in Zhongshan, China.

The health and welfare of older adults have raised increasing attention due to global aging. Cycling is a physical activity and mode of transportation to enhance the mobility and quality of life among older adults. Nevertheless, the planning strategies to promote cycling among older adults are underutilized. Therefore, this paper describes the nonlinear associations of the built environment with cycling frequency among older adults. The data were collected from the Zhongshan Household Travel Survey (ZHTS) in 2012. The modeling approach was the eXtreme Gradient Boosting (XGBoost) model. The fin
