[Circulatory consequences of retinal vein occlusions. Advantages of dynamic angiography].

PURPOSE: To compare angiographic features in patients with branch vein (BRVO) and central retinal vein occlusion (CRVO) and to discuss their possible significance. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Clinical and indocyanine green (ICG) videoangiographic data of 35 patients with CRVO and 5 patients with BRVO were reviewed. In order to more fully understand the significance of hemodynamic alterations, patients with a decrease in retinal flow velocity from other causes (optic neuritis, carotid-cavernous fistula, carotid artery stenosis) were compared to patients with vein occlusion. RESULTS: Whatever the ty…

Systemic diseases associated with various types of retinal vein occlusion.

PURPOSE: To investigate systemic diseases associated with various types of retinal vein occlusion. METHODS: We investigated prospectively in 1090 consecutive patients with retinal vein occlusion, almost all Caucasian (consistent with the racial pattern here), the prevalence of associated systemic disorders before or at the onset of various types of retinal vein occlusion. The patients were categorized into six types of retinal vein occlusion based on defined criteria: nonischemic and ischemic central retinal vein occlusion, nonischemic and ischemic hemi-central retinal vein occlusion, and maj…

Surgical chorioretinal venous anastomosis for ischemic central retinal vein occlusion.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: To report results of a pilot study to create chorioretinal venous anastomosis (CRVA) in eyes with ischemic central retinal vein occlusion (CRVO) via a pars plana approach. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Five eyes of 5 patients with ischemic CRVO underwent surgical CRVA. Following pars plana vitrectomy, the posterior hyaloid face was removed, and slit-like incisions were made with a microvitreoretinal blade adjacent to a major retinal vein in each quadrant. Small pieces of 50 Mersilene sutures (Ethicon, Somerville, NJ) were positioned over the vein and inserted into these incisi…

Central retinal vein occlusion associated with the polycystic ovarian syndrome.

We report a case of central retinal vein occlusion (CRVO) in a young woman with polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS). CRVO in young patients is a rare condition, frequently associated with a severe underlying systemic disorder. This is the first report of CRVO associated with documented PCOS. We discuss the therapeutic dilemma.

Tractional detachment of the macula following branch retinal vein occlusion.

In two patients, a detachment of the macula occurred following a branch retinal vein occlusion. Vitreoretinal relationships were investigated and documented by biomicroscopic photography. Both eyes showed partial posterior vitreous detachment with dense adhesions to a preretinal membrane at the macula. Vitreous contraction and traction appeared to be responsible for the detachment.

Streptokinase in central retinal vein occlusion: a controlled clinical trial.

Forty patients with central retinal vein occlusion were allocated at random either to a treatment group given streptokinase followed by anticoagulatns or to a control group given no specific treatment. The two groups, which were each of 20 patients, were broadly similar in respect of clinical and laboratory values and similar in their initial visual acuity. At follow-up ("final" vision) the visual acuity in the treated group was significantly better than in the untreated group. Only one treated patient developed thrombotic glaucoma compared with four controls. Streptokinase may, however, have …

So-called "central retinal vein occlusion". II. Venous stasis retinopathy.

28 patients (29 eyes) with venous stasis retinopathy (VSR) were studied. This study indicates that VSR is a self-limited, chronic and comparatively benign condition as compared to hemorrhagic retinopathy. No patient with VSR progressed to hemorrhagic retinopathy. The main complication which required management in VSR was the deterioration of central visual acuity (VA) due to development of macular edema which, if untreated, ended in cystoid macular degeneration and permanent central scotoma. Thus the indication for treatment in these cases was the fall of central VA. Ten eyes showed no deterio

Rate and associations of inner retinal thinning in eyes with retinal vein occlusion and regressed macular oedema.

PURPOSE: To investigate the associations between visual acuity (VA) and structural optical coherence tomography (OCT) features in retinal vein occlusion (RVO) eyes after cystoid macular oedema (CMO) regression and to assess whether inner retinal thinning is progressive. METHODS: Retrospective observational study of RVO eyes with regressed CMO for at least 6 months. OCT scans at CMO regression were analysed, and features were correlated with VA at that visit. The inner retinal thickness was longitudinally compared between RVO and unaffected fellow eyes (controls) with linear mixed models. The …

Variability in Capillary Perfusion Is Increased in Regions of Retinal Ischemia Due to Branch Retinal Vein Occlusion.

PURPOSE: To investigate alterations in macular perfusion variability due to branch retinal vein occlusion (BRVO) using a novel approach based on optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA) coefficient of variation (CoV) analysis. METHODS: Thirteen eyes of 13 patients with macular ischemia due to BRVO were studied. Multiple consecutive en face OCTA images were acquired. Bias field correction, spatial alignment, and normalization of intensities across the images were performed followed by pixelwise computation of standard deviation divided by the mean to generate a CoV map. Region of intere…

Simultaneous Branch Retinal Artery and Central Retinal Vein Occlusion Improved with No Ocular Therapy: A Case Report.

A rarely described condition known as branch retinal artery occlusion (BRAO) with concurrent obstruction of the central retinal vein (CRVO) is characterized by diffuse retinal hemorrhages, dilated and tortuous retinal veins, macular and disc edema, cotton wool spots, and a generalized delay in arteriovenous transit on fluorescein angiography, together with a retinal whitening in the area of the affected retinal arterial branch. Although BRAO and CRVO may share underlying systemic risk factors, the pathogenesis of combined BRAO + CRVO is still unknown. We present a BRAO + CRVO case report conce…
