Clearing the cobwebs: An analysis of the timing of youth concussion legislation in U.S. states.

After decades of ignoring head injury in youth sports, U.S. states passed youth concussion legislation with stipulations about when athletes can return to play. Why were some states slower to pass laws than others? We consider this question through the lens of institutional medicalization, where medically informed policies are enacted. Our study recognizes the uneven nature of policy enactment across time and space with event history methods. We explore the influence of high school sport participation and other variables on the timing of legislation in all fifty states, 2007-2014. States with

School masking and COVID-19 community transmission: a synthetic control study.

INTRODUCTION: K-12 schools are not only educational settings but also hubs of social interaction, making them potential drivers of disease transmission within households and communities. While many existing studies have assessed school masking in relation to in-school transmission, the broader community impact of mandatory school masking policies on SARS-CoV-2 infection rates remains poorly understood. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective quasi-experimental study using the synthetic control method to evaluate the association between masking policies and community infection rates during the f

Sport, healthcare and educational organisations' perceptions of a framework for managing concussion in New Zealand schools: a qualitative study.

INTRODUCTION: Concussion guidelines exist for Aotearoa New Zealand schools for safe return-to-learn/sports, yet are infrequently implemented. We previously co-designed a framework for managing concussion in schools with school and sports stakeholders and students with concussion and their parents, and piloted the framework in 12 schools. AIM: We explored perceptions of key national, regional, and local stakeholders regarding the value of a FRAmework for maNaging Concussion in Schools (FRANCS) and develop recommendations for wider-scale implementation. METHODS: Using Participatory Action Rese

Return to sport and daily life activities after vertebral body tethering for AIS: analysis of the sport activity questionnaire.

PURPOSE: Vertebral body tethering (VBT) is an alternative to fusion for selected scoliosis patients. As VBT does not limit spine mobility, it has been propagated that this technique allows a quicker return to physical activity than fusion. However, no data are available to support this statement. Aim of this study was to quantify how much time patients required to resume preoperative activity level and to seek possible associations between return to physical activity and demographic, radiographic and surgical data. METHODS: One year postoperatively, the validated sport activity questionnaire

The Nonmarket Benefits of Education and Ability.

This paper analyzes the non-market benefits of education and ability. Using a dynamic model of educational choice we estimate returns to education that account for selection bias and sorting on gains. We investigate a range of non-market outcomes including incarceration, mental health, voter participation, trust, and participation in welfare. We find distinct patterns of returns that depend on the levels of schooling and ability. Unlike the monetary benefits of education, the benefits to education for many non-market outcomes are greater for low-ability persons. College graduation decreases we

Understanding American Indian Youth in Residential Recovery from Substance Use Disorder: Risk and Protective Experiences and Perceived Recovery Support.

Historical trauma has contributed to the reality that addiction disproportionately affects tribal communities, including American Indian youth. We sought to understand American Indian youths' own experiences and perceptions of the environments to which they return after completing residential treatment for substance use disorder. We recruited three cohorts of American Indian residents of a substance use disorder treatment facility (N = 40). These residents completed a survey that measured risk and protective factors, as well as actual risk behaviors, including drug use, gambling, and violence.

Acute hemorrhagic conjunctivitis, Key West, Florida. An assessment of risk factors for introduction of illness into households and secondary spread during the 1981 epidemic.

From August 22 to November 6, 1981, 989 cases of acute hemorrhagic conjunctivitis were identified in Key West, Florida. The outbreak probably began when an infected 12-year-old Key West resident returned from the Bahamas and transmitted the illness to several neighborhood playmates. The rate of illness was highest for school-aged children, and a high proportion of cases occurred among blacks living in two adjacent low-income housing tracts. A telephone survey of persons living in these two tracts showed that the risk for introduction of illness into a household was 3.8 times greater for famili

Recovery of horses from dysautonomia (grass sickness).

The outcome for 35 horses with chronic dysautonomia which were kept in the hospital at the Royal (Dick) School of Veterinary Studies and subsequently returned to their owners is recorded. They constituted 42.7 per cent of the 82 chronic cases seen between 1991 and 1994; the other 47 horses were euthanased while in hospital. Of the 35 animals returned to their owners four died and 27 were available for follow up; of these 27, 12 were working competitively and six were being trained for future competitive work. It takes at least a year before it is clear whether a horse can compete successfully

Addressing physician shortages in New Mexico through a combined BA/MD program.

The University of New Mexico School of Medicine and College of Arts and Sciences developed its combined BA/MD degree program, which will increase the medical school class from 75 students to 100 in the fall of 2010, to address the critical issue of physician shortages in underserved New Mexico. The program, which began operation at the undergraduate (i.e., college) level in 2006, expands opportunities in medical education for New Mexico students, especially those from rural and underserved minority communities, and prepares them to practice in underserved areas of New Mexico. In the BA/MD prog

Arthroscopic treatment of synovial chondromatosis of the ankle.

We report a case of synovial chondromatosis of the ankle joint, which has been successfully treated with arthroscopic removal of loose bodies and synovectomy, with the patient immediately returning to school and activities of daily living. Recovery after arthroscopic debridement and loose body removal is much shorter in comparison with arthrotomy, and there is no need of immobilization postoperatively.
