OBJECTIVE: To analyze the clinical course, treatment, complications, outcome, and quality of life (QOL) in patients with perineal/perianal rhabdomyosarcoma (PRMS) treated within the CWS-86, -91, -96, and -2002P trials.
BACKGROUND: Although multiple international study trials exist for the treatment of rhabdomyosarcoma, only very limited information is given on treatment, outcome, and QOL in PRMS.
METHODS: A total of 35 patients suffering from PRMS were treated with neoadjuvant chemotherapy. Local therapy with radiation and/or surgery was performed, followed by adjuvant chemotherapy. Function

A general practitioner was consulted by a 15-year-old girl, virgo, suffering from foetid vaginal discharge. The girl was seen by a gynaecologist after antimicrobial treatment had failed. Further investigations revealed that a embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma was present, a sarcoma botryoides. The tumour originating from the cervix uteri was resected completely after which chemotherapy was started. One year later there were no sequelae or indications of metastases. Sarcoma botryoides has a better prognosis than other types of rhabdomyosarcoma. The prognosis is also influenced by the site of origin, w

This report concerns a 20-year-old female who had a F.I.G.O. stage I rhabdomyosarcoma (sarcoma botryoides) of the cervix with a predominant embryonal pattern and heterologous cartilage that pursued an aggressive course despite surgery and chemotherapy. The patient had a pelvic recurrence, developed pulmonary metastases 15 months after diagnosis, and died 6 months later. Despite some previously published favorable prognostic assessments about this unique variant of cervical rhabdomyosarcoma, our limited experience would interject a note of caution, especially in the presence of a focal alveolar

Orbital rhabdomyosarcoma is the most common orbital malignancy of childhood with the common presentation of rapidly evolving unilateral proptosis. We studied six patients who were diagnosed and treated for rhabdomyosarcoma between January 1999 and June 2004. The age of the patients ranged from 4 to 29 years. Four patients presented with acute onset proptosis associated with signs of inflammation, mimicking orbital cellulitis. One patient presented with lid mass. Another patient presented with a soft, blind eye that was pushed superotemporally by a large inflammed, vascularised mass. Embryonal

WTX is a tumor suppressor gene expressed during embryonic development and inactivated in 20-30% of cases of Wilms tumor, the most common pediatric kidney cancer. WTX has been implicated in several cellular processes including Wnt signaling, WT1 transcription, NRF2 degradation, and p53 function. Given that WTX is widely expressed during embryonic development and has been recently shown to regulate mesenchymal precursor cells in several organs, we tested for the potential involvement of WTX in a panel of pediatric tumors and adult sarcomas. A total of 353 tumors were screened for WTX deletions b

BACKGROUND: Rhabdomyosarcoma is a rare type of soft-tissue sarcoma that is more frequently observed in children and is less common in adults. Rhabdomyosarcoma can occur in any part of the body, including tissues without skeletal muscles. The main subtypes of rhabdomyosarcoma are embryonal, alveolar, and pleomorphic. Pleomorphic rhabdomyosarcoma is a rare variant typically found in adults over 45 years old and is characterized by early metastasis.
CASE PRESENTATION: This article reports a rare case of primary pleomorphic rhabdomyosarcoma in the duodenum of A 67-year-old Iranian male. The patie

Undifferentiated (embryonal) liver sarcoma (UELS) is a rare tumor that typically occurs in children. The association of UELS with neoplasm other than mesenchymal liver hamartoma is exceedingly rare. The aim of the study was to report 3 cases of UELS, 2 of them being interesting because of their association with another neoplasm, vaginal embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma in a teenage girl and B-acute lymphoblastic leukemia in a middle-aged woman. Besides, one of our cases of UELS, in a 58-year-old woman, is an extremely rare presentation of such a tumor in a middle-aged adult. The patient's clinical f

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to determine the rhabdomyosarcoma types involving the head and neck (H&N) region in children and their immunophenotype.
DESIGN: Anatomic pathology archives at Texas Children's Hospital were searched for all rhabdomyosarcoma cases over a 20-year period. One-hundred and thirty-seven cases were identified, with 50 being H&N cases. The cases were typed according to the Intergroup Rhabdomyosarcoma Study (IRS) criteria. Immunocytochemistry for myogenic and non-myogenic markers was performed on all H&N cases. Electron micrographs from cases (n=32) where ultra

BACKGROUND: Rhabdomyosarcoma (RMS) is a rare malignancy that affects both children and young adults. Therefore, the current incidence and mortality rates of ocular and orbital rhabdomyosarcoma (ORMS) need to be clarified. We aimed to explore the epidemiology, trends, and survival outcomes of ORMS in the United States population spanning over two decades, from 1996 to 2018.
METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed 92,633 patients with ocular and adnexal malignancies and identified 640 ORMS cases from the North American Association of National Cancer Registries. Demographics, tumor characteristics,

We report a case of rhabdomyosarcoma arising in a 34-year-old woman with a 16-year history of oral contraceptive use. This is the first reported case of hepatic rhabdomyosarcoma associated with oral contraception. The tumor did not grossly or microscopically involve biliary structures or gall bladder. It was mostly comprised of undifferentiated spindle cells that were histologically similar to embryonal sarcoma. Foci of cells showing rhabdomyoblastic differentiation blended into poorly formed muscle bundles. No epithelial neoplasm was identified by either morphologic or immunohistochemical ana

Costello syndrome is caused by heterozygous de novo missense mutations in the protooncogene HRAS with tumor predisposition, especially rhabdomyosarcoma. We here report two pediatric patients with Costello syndrome and umbilical ligament rhabdomyosarcoma. A review of the literature published in English in MEDLINE from January 1971 to June 2016 using the search terms "Costello syndrome" and "rhabdomyosarcoma" was performed, including two new cases that we describe. Twenty-six patients with Costello syndrome and rhabdomyosarcoma were recorded with mean age of diagnosis of 2 years and 8 months. Th

Rhabdomyosarcoma (RMS) is a high-grade sarcoma that predominantly affects children, and rarely, the adult population. RMS demonstrates three major histologic variants: Embryonal, alveolar, and pleomorphic. A limited number of documented pure RMS cases of the gynecologic organs in adult women are found in the literature. Of these reports, the fallopian tube (FT) is reported as the primary site in only three cases, those included one of embryonal and two of the pleomorphic histologic variants. Herein, we report the first case of alveolar RMS arising in the FT of an adult woman and presenting as

Rhabdomyosarcoma (RMS) is the most common soft-tissue tumor in children, frequently affecting the nose, nasopharynx, and paranasal sinuses. RMS of this sinonasal region manifests with non-specific nasal symptoms of allergic rhinitis, sinusitis, or upper airway infection. Associated ocular symptoms are rare. We describe a young girl who presented with acute onset squint secondary to sinonasal RMS. Imaging showed an aggressive sinonasal tumor with oropharyngeal, intraorbital, and intracranial extension. Histopathological findings were consistent with a diagnosis of rhabdomyosarcoma, embryonal ty…

We report the case of a 22-year old female presenting with an embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma of the cervix that was successfully treated by surgery followed by adjuvant radiation therapy and chemotherapy. She subsequently developed radiation cystitis after 10 years of follow-up. She was successfully treated with cystoscopic fulguration. In this report, we discuss a review of management strategies for cervical rhabdomyosarcoma and also throw some light on incidence and management of radiation cystitis after pelvic radiotherapy. We discuss the dose independence of radiation cystitis, which can be se

Costello Syndrome (CS) results from a germline mutation in the HRAS gene. Rhabdomyosarcoma in CS patients has arisen from various sites but not the orbit. The authors present the first case report of orbital rhabdomyosarcoma in a patient with CS. An 18-month-old male known for CS presented with progressively worsening proptosis and periorbital edema. On presentation, he had proptosis with inferolateral globe displacement, chemosis and injection. An urgent computed tomography scan revealed a left orbital mass extending from the posterior aspect of the globe to the orbital apex, and pathological

BACKGROUND: Orbital metastasis from rhabdomyosarcoma is a rare disorder with a poor prognosis for long-term survival. Only one other detailed account of this disorder has appeared in the ophthalmic literature.
METHODS: The authors report the clinical features of four patients with presumed orbital metastasis from alveolar and embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma.
RESULTS: The most common ophthalmic manifestations of orbital metastasis from rhabdomyosarcoma in these patients included proptosis, reduced visual acuity, orbital pain, and motility disorders. Computed tomography documented orbital masses in

Rhabdomyosarcoma (RMS) is a morphologically heterogeneous high-grade malignancy that occurs uncommonly in the pediatric genitourinary (GU) system, and the most typical clinical symptoms are urinary frequency, urgency, hematuria, and associated with infection. The boys in this case, persistent urinary incontinence was relatively rare, and it was easily misdiagnosed as pediatric urinary incontinence in clinical diagnosis. Incontinence disease and lower urinary tract symptoms were identified by imaging examination, and final pathological biopsy confirmed the diagnosis of pediatric GU embryonal rh

A newborn male Holstein calf developed a nodular enlargement at the tip of the tongue. Histopathological examination of the mass revealed predominant proliferating small, round, spindloid or polygonal neoplastic cells with scattered myoblast- and myotube-like cells and multinuclear giant cells. Phosphotungstic acid haematoxylin staining revealed cytoplasmic cross-striations in a few neoplastic cells. Neoplastic cells were immunopositive for vimentin, desmin, myoD1, myogenin, myoglobin and α-smooth muscle actin. The mass was diagnosed as embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma. To the best of our knowledge,

We present a rare case of a four-year-old boy with a botyroid embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma of the right middle ear. Rhabdomyosarcoma is a soft tissue malignancy which is thought to originate from embryonic mesenchymal cells of striated skeletal muscle. It is a disease primarily of children and is exceptionally rare in parameningeal regions. The diagnosis is often delayed and easily misdiagnosed as aural polyp. Therefore, advanced disease is common at the time of diagnosis. A four-year-old boy presented with a four-month history of recurrent left ear blood and pus discharge, otalgia and fevers
