[Definition and clinic of the allergic rhinitis].

The allergic rhinitis is the most common immune disorder with a lifetime prevalence of 24% and one of the most common chronic diseases at all--with tendency to rise. It occurs in childhood and influences the patients' social life, school performance and labour productivity. Furthermore the allergic rhinitis is accompanied by a lot of comorbidities, including conjunctivitis, asthma bronchiale, food allergy, neurodermatitis and sinusitis. For example the risk for asthma is 3.2-fold higher for adults with allergic rhinitis than for healthy people.

Indications for surgery in refractory rhinitis.

Medical treatment of chronic rhinitis is successful in a majority of patients, but there is a still large population of patients who fail medical therapy. Surgical treatment for patients with severe persistent allergic rhinitis is not a new solution, but recent advancements in technology and surgical technique have made surgery safer and more effective. There is no gold standard of treatment in patients with refractory rhinitis, and surgeons may select a variety of procedures and techniques based on a patient's anatomy, severity of disease, and comorbidities. Unfortunately, there are currently…

Is allergic rhinitis a trivial disease?

BACKGROUND: Asthma and rhinitis often coexist, which potentially increases the disease severity and can negatively impact a patients' quality of life. However, there are few reports based on data obtained from the International Study of Asthma and Allergies in Childhood examining asthma severity in combination with rhinitisrelated symptoms. OBJECTIVE: To demonstrate whether current rhinitis and current rhinoconjunctivitis are associated with the development of asthma or its increasing severity in Brazilian adolescents. METHODS: The prevalence of current asthma was correlated with the prevale…

Chronic rhinitis: a manifestation of leprosy.

Leprosy, or Hansen disease, is an infection that affects the mucous membranes of the respiratory tract and may manifest with nasal symptoms of chronic rhinitis, including nasal congestion, rhinorrhea, and intermittent epistaxis. We present a case of a woman diagnosed with leprosy as an incidental finding from a biopsy obtained during endoscopic sinus surgery for the management of chronic rhinitis. The diagnosis of leprosy should be considered in patients with nasal symptoms and presumptive chronic rhinitis who do not respond adequately to standard therapies.

The effects of spirulina on allergic rhinitis.

The prevalence of allergic rhinitis is increasing globally due to various causes. It affects the quality life of a large group of people in all around the world. Allergic rhinitis still remains inadequately controlled with present medical means. The need of continuous medical therapy makes individuals anxious about the side effects of the drugs. So there is a need for an alternative strategy. Effects of spirulina, tinospora cordifolia and butterbur were investigated recently on allergic rhinitis in just very few investigations. Spirulina represents a blue-green alga that is produced and commer…

The role of the nervous system in rhinitis.

The nose provides defensive and homeostatic functions requiring rapid responses to physical and chemical stimuli. As a result, it is armed w … rated by inputs from other body regions. Hence all symptoms that constitute the nosologic entity of rhinitis can be triggered through neural pathways. In addition, neural signals generated in the nose can influence distal physiology, such as that of the bronchial tree and the cardiovascular system. Neural function can be chronically upregulated in the pres …

Influences of allergic rhinitis on sleep.

BACKGROUND: Allergic rhinitis is classically characterized by sneezing, pruritus, rhinorrhea, and nasal congestion. These symptoms can lead to impaired nocturnal sleep, and this impairment results in daytime fatigue and somnolence, reducing both learning and work efficiency and decreasing quality of life. STUDY DESIGN: In addition, the mediators of AR, including histamine, leukotrienes, cytokines, and prostaglandins, may play a role in sleep regulation and, thus, may be directly involved in this impairment independent of nasal obstruction. Recumbency and/or diurnal variation augments turbinat…

The asthma and allergic rhinitis link.

During the past 10 years, our understanding of asthma and allergic rhinitis (AR) has evolved. The historic perspective of these allergen-induced disorders as distinct and separate entities is being displaced by current thinking that they are described better as a continuum of inflammation involving one common airway. Therefore, traditional therapies originally indicated for AR and asthma are being reassessed to explore their potential value in both upper- and lower-airway diseases. Recently, there has been a renewed interest in the role that histamines play in lower-airway disease, and interes…

Rhinitis: a dose of epidemiological reality.

In the wide spectrum of medical practice, rhinitis is often incorrectly assumed to be solely allergic in etiology. Consequently, other rhinitis subtypes (nonallergic and mixed) remain under-diagnosed. This is of concern because inaccurate diagnosis may lead to unsatisfactory treatment outcome. Contributing to this under-diagnosis is the fact that primary care practitioners do not often have at their disposal the same diagnostic tools as the allergist. Tools that the allergist is more likely to use include nasal cytology, skin testing and in vitro assays for specific immunoglobulin E. Patients …

The evolution of pharmacotherapy for rhinitis and urticaria.

The efficacy of antihistamines in the treatment of allergic rhinitis and urticaria is compared. In treating allergic rhinitis, the new second- and third-generation antihistamines have multiple advantages including rapid onset of action, extended duration of action, and efficacy for nearly all the symptoms that are produced by allergen sensitization. These include non-nasal and nasal symptoms. These agents are generally nonsedating and can be administered either once or twice daily. There is minimal potentiation for QTC prolongation, and they are safe and effective as first-line therapies for s…

Evaluation and management of allergic rhinitis.

Allergic rhinitis is a problematic disorder that is common. The practicing physician recognizes the majority of the overt clinical symptoms of sneezing, nasal itching, postnasal discharge, and eye symptoms but may not be attuned to the more subtle symptoms of lethargy, headache, and loss of productivity they create. Food sensitivities may complicate the evaluation and treatment of the sensitive patient, and frequently the idea of foods causing problems with rhinitis is ignored. For most patients, practical medications are beneficial in reducing symptoms without producing the side effects of se…

Rhinitis as a mechanism of respiratory defense.

The incidence of rhinitis is on the increase, especially in towns and cities with high levels of pollution from motor traffic and industry. There is a growing body of evidence which links this increased incidence of rhinitis to chronic nasal irritation from industrial pollution. Studies on the mechanisms of nasal inflammation and the nasal immune response are now providing insights into the etiology of rhinitis. This knowledge will help in the development of therapies aimed at alleviating the symptoms of rhinitis and controlling the development of rhinitis in susceptible individuals. This revi…

Diagnosis and treatment of allergic rhinitis.

Allergic rhinitis is frequently seen by primary care providers. Symptoms include rhinorrhea, itching of nose and eyes, nasal congestion, and sneezing. They occur when the patient is exposed to antigens stimulating mediator release. History is essential to assist differential diagnosis and provide education. This article reviews common findings of the physical exam, diagnostic testing, and differential diagnosis. The first line of treatment is avoidance, followed by medications such as antihistamines, decongestants, and nasal steroids. If these treatments are not effective, then referral to an …

Allergic rhinitis in a herd of cattle.

Allergic rhinitis was identified in a herd of Hereford cattle. Affected cattle had clinical signs of rhinitis (eg, nasal discharge, sneezing, nasal irritation, and nasal pruritus) and multiple small proliferative lesions in the nasal passages. Eosinophils were the predominant cell type in nasal discharges, and histologic examination of nasal mucosa biopsy specimens revealed chronic proliferative eosinophilic rhinitis. Results of CBC were normal; plasma fibrinogen concentrations were within reference limits. Results of intradermal allergen sensitivity testing and an ELISA for allergen-specific …
