Molecular Profiling of Ticks and Associated Pathogens: First Report of Rickettsia sibirica, Rickettsia slovaca, and Babesia microti in Ticks From Pakistan.

Global distribution of ticks and their associated tick-borne pathogens (TBPs) presents substantial health concerns for both humans and anima … on cattle (544/186; 2.92), while least was found on goats (272/164; 1.66). Various TBPs, including Rickettsia (R) spp. (via gltA, sca4, ompA, ompB genes), Anaplasma (A) sp. (via 16S rRNA gene), Coxiella burnetii (via IS1111 gene), Piroplasm and Hepatozoon (H) spp. (via 18S rRNA gene) were screened. The Rh. microplus tick species showed highest positivity ra …

Pangenomic and genomic plasticity analyses of the genus Rickettsia.

The Rickettsia genus comprises obligate intracellular bacteria transmitted by arthropods and responsible for clinically relevant zoonoses, rickettsioses, such as spotted fever and typhus. The difficulty of cultivating these bacteria in vitro reinforces the importance of in silico approaches, such as pangenomic and genomic plasticity analyses. This study analyzed 165 genomes from 31 Rickettsia species available in the REFSEQ (NCBI) database. Tools such as Orthofinder, ANIclustermap, Gegenees, and Mauve were used to classify genes into core, shared, and singletons, assess genomic similarity, and…

[ON THE ROLE OF RICKETTSIA RAOULTII IN THE EPIDEMIOLOGY OF RICKETTSIOSES IN RUSSIA].

The paper analyzes data on the prevalence and possible epidemiological importance of Rickettsia raoultii. The possible risk of infection in the population was assessed from the results of a serological study of patients after tick suction and from those of molecular biological determination of contamination of removed carriers. The place of Rickettsia raoultii among other rickettsia causing rickettsioses of a tick-borne spotted fever group is assessed in Russia.

Spotted fever group Rickettsiae in ticks in Cyprus.

In two surveys conducted from March 1999 to March 2001 and from January 2004 to December 2006, a total of 3,950 ticks (belonging to ten different species) were collected from seven domestic and wild animals (goat, sheep, cattle, dog, fox, hare, and mouflon) from different localities throughout Cyprus. In order to establish their infection rate with Spotted Fever Rickettsiae (SFG), ticks were pooled and tested by polymerase chain reaction targeting gltA and ompA genes, followed by sequencing analysis. When tick pools tested positive, individual ticks were then tested one by one, and of the 3,95…

[Meningoencephalitis caused by Rickettsia conorii in a young infant].

INTRODUCTION: Mediterranean spotted fever is an infectious disease due to Rickettsia conori, endemic in the Mediterranean basin. It is usually considered to be a benign disease; however, severe systemic manifestations have been reported in which neurological involvement occurs. These complications are rare in children. CASE REPORT: We report a case of a 14-month-old boy, who was hospitalized for meningoencephalitis after seven days of high fever and maculopapular rash. On clinical observation there were generalized maculopapular elements and an inoculation eschar tache noire at the right ear.…

Functional analysis of secA homologues from rickettsiae.

The molecular basis of protein secretion that underlines rickettsial pathogenesis remains unknown. This paper reports the molecular and functional analysis of the putative secA gene, an essential component of the Sec-dependent protein secretion pathway, from Rickettsia rickettsii and Rickettsia typhi, the aetiological agents of Rocky Mountain spotted fever and murine typhus, respectively. The sequence analysis of the cloned secA genes from R. rickettsii and R. typhi show ORFs of 2721 and 2718 nt, respectively. Alignment of the deduced amino acid sequences reveals the presence of highly conserv…

A case of pleurisy associated with antibodies to Rickettsia conorii.

Rickettsia conorii is endemic in Mediterranean area. We describe an unusual sace of R. Conorii infection, which concerns a farmer with clinical, radiological and cytological findings of pleurisy without evidence of malignancy. An elevated antibody titre for R. Conorii was observed, using an indirect immunofluorescent antibody test. After treatment with Doxycycline, the patient presented a significant improvement of his clinical and radiological image and a four-fold decrease of the antibody titre for R. conorii.
