Knuckle pads: does knuckle cracking play an etiologic role?

Very little has been published on knuckle pads and the cosmetic and psychological effects they can have. In children, most knuckle pads are considered to be idiopathic; however, familial cases as well as those caused by trauma have been described. We report a 14-year-old African American girl with a 3-year history of slowly enlarging hyperkeratotic nodules over multiple finger joints and on the lateral aspects of several fingers. These lesions were initially confined to the patient's left hand but subsequently involved the right hand. The patient and her mother denied any unusual hobbies or sp

Does the pineal gland play a role in neuroendocrine fear responses?

The pineal gland secretes melatonin under an influence of suprachiasmatic nucleus neurones. Pinealectomy or melatonin administration affects behavioural responses to novel stimuli. Fear or novel stimuli inhibit vasopressin (VP) and facilitate oxytocin (OT) or prolactin (PRL) release from the pituitary. Thus the suprachiasmatic nucleus-pineal gland system may modulate VP, OT and PRL responses to conditioned fear stimuli. In the present experiments with male rats, pinealectomy or melatonin administration did not significantly change VP, OT or PRL responses to conditioned fear stimuli. Electrolyt

Defecography: does parity play a role in the development of rectal prolapse?

Few studies related to parity address the changes in anorectal function in women. Since the majority of patients with rectal prolapse are women, we undertook this study to assess the role of parity in the development of rectal prolapse. We retrospectively reviewed defecography studies performed on 354 female patients over a 10-year period. Studies noting the presence of intra-anal and external rectal prolapse (full thickness protrusion of the rectum into and through the anal sphincter) were reviewed. Cases with intrarectal or hidden rectal prolapse, a condition of lesser clinical importance, w

Fetal alcohol syndrome: does alcohol withdrawal play a role?

Alcohol use by a pregnant woman may interfere with the development of her fetus. Newborns whose mothers are intoxicated during delivery can experience withdrawal symptoms, such as tremors and even seizures. It is likely that withdrawal also can occur during fetal development. Thus, the possibility exists that withdrawal by the pregnant woman may exacerbate alcohol's adverse effects on her fetus. One potential mechanism through which alcohol withdrawal might damage the fetus involves the receptor for the neurotransmitter glutamate (i.e., the N-methyl-D-aspartate [NMDA] receptor). This receptor

What role does Helicobacter pylori play in gastric cancer?

Several lines of evidence support an association between Helicobacter pylori infection and gastric cancer. The natural history of H. pylori-associated gastritis is inexorable progression ultimately leading to gastric atrophy. In general, this process requires between 20 and 40 years to complete. Atrophic gastritis is widely considered to be a precursor lesion of the intestinal type of gastric cancer. Moreover, areas with a high prevalence of H. pylori infection also have a high prevalence of gastric cancer. Strong evidence from three prospective studies shows the risk of gastric cancer to be i

Does food intolerance play a role in juvenile chronic arthritis?

Sixty children with juvenile chronic arthritis (JCA) have been examined at the paediatric rheumatology out-patient clinic in Maastricht, of whom three ultimately appeared to have a food intolerance. In one of these three patients, there appeared to be a relationship with joint complaints. In the course of the elimination/challenge tests which were conducted, severe painful swelling of the knee occurred rapidly after each challenge. Three challenges were carried out with the same result each time. Since the symptoms did not disappear entirely following elimination of milk, it was concluded that

Kinetoplasts play an important role in the drug responses of Trypanosoma brucei.

Trypanosoma brucei E164 and a dyskinetoplastic derivative, Dysk164, were injected into mice that were treated subsequently with methylglyoxal-bis-guanylhydrazone, berenil, ethidium bromide, and acriflavine. Additionally, parasites were photoaffinity labeled with ethidium monoazide to effect covalent drug attachment prior to injection into animals. In all cases, killing of animals with E164 was blocked by the drug treatment, whereas killing due to Dysk164 was not. These findings are consistent with the view that the intact kinetoplast plays an essential role in the action of these drugs.

The frontotemporal region plays a role in the genesis of migraine without aura.

We have compared the migraine-inducing effect of nitroglycerin ointment applied to the frontotemporal region of the head, which is innervated by the ophthalmic and maxillary divisions of the trigeminal nerve, with that of nitroglycerin applied to the chin (innervated by the mandibular division), the posterolateral region of the neck (innervated by the second and third cervical roots), the lateral surface of the proximal third of the forearm (innervated by the sixth cervical root), and the medial surface of the upper-arm region (second dorsal root). One hundred patients suffering from migraine

Does lead play a role in the development of chronic renal disease?

For many decades lead has been considered to be one of the causes of chronic renal failure. A critical analysis of the available epidemiological studies, however, indicates that the relationship between lead exposure and the development of chronic renal failure is largely circumstantial. Indeed, several aspects remain obscure: relative and absolute risk, risk factors, duration of exposure, pathology and diagnostic criteria. Moreover, methodological problems related to cohort selection (i.e. the 'Healthy worker effect'), study design and definition of renal dysfunction may limit the value of th

Does Coercive Process Play a Role in Teen Dating Violence?

Coercion theory posits that a vicious cycle of negative reinforcement traps both parents and children, shaping young children to become stably aggressive in conflicts with their parents. Research on intimate partner violence has found some evidence supporting the application of coercion theory in explaining aggressive escalation in adult conflicts as well. It is unclear whether the same processes are at play during teens' early dating relationships. On the one hand, dating aggression emerges as soon as dating relationships do. On the other hand, we also know that if aggression presents extreme
