Smart farming with AI: Enhancing anemia detection in small ruminants.

Accurate classification of FAMACHA© scores is essential for assessing anemia in small ruminants and optimizing parasite management strategies in livestock agriculture. The FAMACHA© system categorizes anemia severity on a scale from 1 to 5, where scores 1 and 2 indicate healthy animals, score 3 represents a borderline condition, and scores 4 and 5 indicate severe anemia. In this study, a dataset of 4700 images of the lower eye conjunctiva of young male goats was collected weekly over six months using a Samsung A54 smartphone. Traditional FAMACHA© assessment methods rely on subjective visual exa

Current and Emerging Diagnostic Approaches to Bacterial Diseases of Ruminants.

The diagnostic approaches and methods to detect bacterial pathogens in ruminants are discussed, with a focus on cattle. Conventional diagnostic methods using culture, isolation, and characterization are being replaced or supplemented with new methods. These include molecular diagnostics such as real-time polymerase chain reaction and whole-genome sequencing. In addition, methods such as matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization-time-of-flight mass spectrometry enable rapid identification and enhanced pathogen characterization. These emerging diagnostic tools can greatly enhance the ability t

The role of small ruminants in the epidemiology of leptospirosis.

Leptospirosis is a common global zoonotic disease of man and all farm animals. Although most leptospiral infections in sheep and goats are asymptomatic, they may play a role in the epidemiology of the disease by the spread of Leptospira through the urine. This study was carried out to evaluate the role of sheep and goats in the epidemiology of leptospirosis. Blood and urine samples were taken from 210 goats and 246 sheep. To detect antibodies, sera samples were tested with 8 live serovars of L. interrogans (Hardjo, Pomona, Grippotyphosa, Canicola, Ballum, Icterhemorrhagiae, Tarasovi, and Austr

Review: Seasonal differences in the physiology of wild northern ruminants.

Ruminants living in seasonal environments face a two-fold challenge during winter. The energetic cost of maintaining a high body temperature is higher at lower ambient temperatures, and this is compounded by poor availability and quality of feed. Wild ruminants acclimatize to this energetic challenge by hypothermia, that is, reduced endogenous heat production and abandoning the maintenance of a high body temperature, particularly in peripheral body parts. Further but lesser contributions to lower energy expenditure during winter are reduced foraging activity; lower heat increment of feeding; a

Endemic and Emerging Arboviruses in Domestic Ruminants in East Asia.

Epizootic congenital abnormalities caused by Akabane, Aino, and Chuzan viruses have damaged the reproduction of domestic ruminants in East Asia for many years. In the past, large outbreaks of febrile illness related to bovine ephemeral fever and Ibaraki viruses severely affected the cattle industry in that region. In recent years, vaccines against these viruses have reduced the occurrence of diseases, although the viruses are still circulating and have occasionally caused sporadic and small-scaled epidemics. Over a long-term monitoring period, many arboviruses other than the above-mentioned vi

Morphological and molecular characterization of Paramphistomum epiclitum of small ruminants.

Morphological and molecular identification can pave the way to design the most effective control measures against the Paramphistomum epiclitum in small ruminants. Morphology of the flukes had described the features of Paramphistomum genus. Body was conical with concave ventral and convex dorsal surface, tegumental spines all around the body in the immature stage, terminal funnel shape oral sucker, sub-terminal acetabulum, blind caeca with a serpentine course touching the anterior level of the acetabulum. Vitelline glands were at the lateral margins of the body extended from the pharynx to the

Functional connectivity in ruminants: A generalized state-dependent modelling approach.

Animal behaviour is increasingly seen as an important component in maintaining functional connectivity between patches in fragmented landscapes. However, models that explicitly incorporate behavioural trade-offs are rarely applied to landscape planning problems like connectivity. The aim of this study was to explore how state-dependent behaviour influenced functional connectivity between patches from a theoretical perspective. We investigated how inter-patch distances influenced functional connectivity using a dynamic state variable model framework. The decision making process of an individual

Strategies to Optimize the Efficacy of Anthelmintic Drugs in Ruminants.

Anthelmintic resistance in human and animal pathogenic helminths has been spreading in prevalence and severity. Multidrug resistance is a widespread problem in livestock animals. The use of available pharmacology-based information is critical to the design of successful future approaches for parasite control. Relevant scientific work supporting the main strategies to optimize anthelmintic therapy in ruminants under the current drug-resistance scenario is described here. We emphasize the need for further integrated pharmaco-parasitological knowledge to extend the lifespan of both traditional an

Spermatozoa Cryopreservation: State of Art and Future in Small Ruminants.

The cryotolerance of farm animal spermatozoa varies according to their specific features, such as size, shape, and lipid composition. Thus, it is impossible to develop a standardized freezing procedure for different kinds of livestock species. The establishment of an efficient semen cryopreservation procedure will facilitate long-term conservation of small ruminant genetic resources and extension of artificial insemination in daily production. Different from sheep, goat seminal plasma contains a phospholipase, which can affect spermatozoa viability through interaction with milk or egg yolk. Cu

Fasciola and fasciolosis in ruminants in Europe: Identifying research needs.

Fasciola hepatica is a trematode parasite with a global distribution, which is responsible for considerable disease and production losses in a range of food producing species. It is also identified by WHO as a re-emerging neglected tropical disease associated with endemic and epidemic outbreaks of disease in human populations. In Europe, F. hepatica is mostly associated with disease in sheep, cattle and goats. This study reviews the most recent advances in our understanding of the transmission, diagnosis, epidemiology and the economic impact of fasciolosis. We also focus on the impact of the s

Occurrence of Bluetongue in ruminants in Tamil Nadu, South India.

Tamil Nadu is located in the South-Eastern part of Indian peninsula, between 8.087° and 13.09°N and 76.50° and 80.27°E. Bluetongue (BT) was first reported in this region in sheep during 1982 with regular occurrence thereafter. In 1989-1990, 1997-1998 and 2005-2006, there was wide spread occurrence of BT resulting in huge mortality of sheep. The present study had the goal of isolating the BTV from outbreaks in sheep occurred in Tamil Naadu between 2003-2011 and comparing the VP2 gene sequences of the BTV isolates involved in such outbreaks. Serotypes 1, 2, 16, and 23 of the Bluetongue virus (BT

Detection of Mycoplasma agalactiae in Small Ruminants of Southeast Iran.

Agalactia is an infectious and contagious disease of small ruminants caused by Mycoplasma agalactiae (M. agalactiae). Although different microorganism strains contribute to this disease, M. agalactiae is known as the most prominent causative agent. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the rate of M. agalactiae involvement in contagious agalactia in the southeast region of Iran. Sampling was performed from milk, conjunctiva, ear lesions, and joints exudate of suspicious sheep and goat flocks according to the reports of Iran Veterinary Organization. The presence of Mycoplasma and its speci

Liver fluke vaccines in ruminants: strategies, progress and future opportunities.

The development of a vaccine for Fasciola spp. in livestock is a challenge and would be advanced by harnessing our knowledge of acquired immune mechanisms expressed by resistant livestock against fluke infection. Antibody-dependent cell-mediated cytotoxicity directed to the surface tegument of juvenile/immature flukes is a host immune effector mechanism, suggesting that antigens on the surface of young flukes may represent prime candidates for a fluke vaccine. A Type 1 immune response shortly after fluke infection is associated with resistance to infection in resistant sheep, indicating that v

Assisted reproductive technologies in the reproductive management of small ruminants.

In modern agriculture, assisted reproductive technologies are being used for out of season oestrus induction, enhancement of reproductive performance and genetic improvement. In addition, they can have substantial contribution in preservation of endangered species or breeds, as well as in eradication programs of various diseases. While their applications are widespread in cattle, in small ruminants it is almost restricted to artificial insemination. The main limitations of a wider application in small ruminants are the naturally occurring anoestrus period, the variability of response to supero

Embryonic and early foetal losses in cattle and other ruminants.

Embryo survival is a major factor affecting production and economic efficiency in all systems of ruminant milk and meat production. For heifers, beef and moderate yielding dairy cows, does and camelids it appears that fertilization generally lies between 90% and 100%. In high-producing dairy cows there is a less substantive body of literature, but it would appear that it is somewhat lower and perhaps more variable. In cattle, the major component of embryo loss occurs before day 16 following breeding with some evidence of greater losses before day 8 in high-producing dairy cows. In cattle late
