Stimulant actions of histamine H1 antagonists on operant behavior in the squirrel monkey.

Squirrel monkeys were studied under fixed-interval schedules of reinforcement in which the first response (lever press) after a fixed period time resulted either in the delivery of a food pellet or in the termination of stimuli associated with impending electric shock delivery. Benztropine mesylate (0.03-1.7 mg/kg), promethazine HCl (0.3-10 mg/kg), and diphenhydramine HCl (0.3-17 mg/kg) all produced marked increases in responding at intermediate doses. The increases in responding were at least as great as those observed with psychomotor stimulants, such as amphetamine, in this species under si

The prostate of the nonhuman primate: normal anatomy and pathology.

The caudal and cranial prostate of different species of nonhuman primates were examined for histologic characteristics and pathological abnormalities. One hundred specimens from 12 species were represented. Among the pathologies found were: 1) cystic hyperplasia; 2) fibromuscular hyperplasia; 3) squamous metaplasia; 4) chronic and acute bacterial prostatitis; 5) prostate adenocarcinoma; and 6) other miscellaneous pathologic changes. A historical review of histological characteristics and pathological abnormalities of the nonhuman primate prostate is given. Based upon findings in this study, an

Chronic experimental glaucoma in primates. I. Production of elevated intraocular pressure by anterior chamber injection of autologous ghost red blood cells.

Chronic elevations of intraocular pressure (IOP) were produced in rabbit and monkey eyes by anterior chamber injection of autologous fixed red blood cells. The method confirms the possibility of secondary glaucoma due to trabecular obstruction by ghost cells in eyes with intraocular hemorrhage. In primates, decreased aqueous outflow may result from direct obstruction by free cells and macrophages as well as swelling of trabecular endothelium following phagocytosis of cellular debris. IOP elevations for from 2 days to greater than 1 month were produced in order to study the effects of elevated

Air caloric stimulation with tympanic membrane perforation.

Warm air caloric stimulation in an ear with tympanic membrane perforation or mastoidectomy cavity often causes contralateral nystagmus. Secondary nystagmus is common. Our evidence with squirrel monkeys and patients indicates that the primary "inversion" results from endolymph cooling due to evaporative cooling due to evaporative cooling of the mucus lining the middle ear cavity, by the dry air stimulus. Disconjugate horizontal nystagmus was found in a patient with large eardrum perforation, after cold air caloric stimulation. The effect probably resulted from stimulation of the anterior or pos

Bile, sulphur and carbohydrate metabolic variation co-occur with host adiposity in mice colonized with primate microbiota.

Although mechanistic links between the microbiome and chronic disease are increasingly well defined, how microbiomes facilitate normal variation in host metabolism remains less clear. Building on our recent demonstration that pooled faecal inocula from different primate species can cause relative differences in mouse host adiposity, we define potential mechanisms by which this could occur. Using existing samples from germ-free mice inoculated with faecal samples from humans (Homo sapiens), rhesus macaques (Macaca mulatta) and squirrel monkeys (Saimiri boliviensis), we integrate shotgun metagen…

LESIONS OF THE FEMALE REPRODUCTIVE TRACT IN JAPANESE MACAQUE ( MACACA FUSCATA) FROM TWO CAPTIVE COLONIES.

Reproductive lesions have been described in various nonhuman primate species, including rhesus macaques ( Macaca mulatta), cynomolgus macaques ( Macaca fascicularis), baboons ( Papio spp.), squirrel monkeys ( Saimiri sciureus), and chimpanzees ( Pan spp.); however, there are few publications describing reproductive disease and pathology in Japanese macaques ( Macaca fuscata). A retrospective evaluation of postmortem reports for two captive M. fuscata populations housed within zoos from 1982 through 2015 was completed, comparing reproductive diseases diagnosed by gross pathology and histopathol…

Comparison of the primate alphaherpesviruses. I. Characterization of two herpesviruses from spider monkeys and squirrel monkeys and viral polypeptides synthesized in infected cells.

Biological and biochemical properties of two neurotropic herpesviruses of New World monkeys--Herpesvirus saimiri type 1 (HVS-1) and Herpesvirus ateles type 1 (HVA-1)--were examined and compared. HVS-1 and HVA-1 both exhibited a time course of replication similar to another primate herpesvirus, SA 8. Both viruses grew rapidly and high titers of infectious virus were readily produced. HVS-1 and HVA-1 were also able to replicate efficiently in cell lines derived from a number of primate and non-primate species. Analysis of proteins synthesized in infected cells revealed the presence of over 30 vi…

Resting-State Networks of Awake Adolescent and Adult Squirrel Monkeys Using Ultra-High Field (9.4 T) Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging.

Resting-state networks (RSNs) are increasingly forwarded as candidate biomarkers for neuropsychiatric disorders. Such biomarkers may provide objective measures for evaluating novel therapeutic interventions in nonhuman primates often used in translational neuroimaging research. This study aimed to characterize the RSNs of awake squirrel monkeys and compare the characteristics of those networks in adolescent and adult subjects. Twenty-seven squirrel monkeys [n = 12 adolescents (6 male/6 female) ∼2.5 years and n = 15 adults (7 male/8 female) ∼9.5 years] were gradually acclimated to awake scannin

Interactions within and between parallel parietal-frontal networks involved in complex motor behaviors in prosimian galagos and a squirrel monkey.

Long-train intracortical microstimulation (ICMS) of motor (M1) and posterior parietal cortices (PPC) in primates reveals cortical domains for different ethologically relevant behaviors. How functional domains interact with each other in producing motor behaviors is not known. In this study, we tested our hypothesis that matching domains interact to produce a specific complex movement, whereas connections between nonmatching domains are involved in suppression of conflicting motor outputs to prevent competing movements. In anesthetized galagos, we used 500-ms trains of ICMS to evoke complex mov

Longitudinal assessment of spinal cord injuries in nonhuman primates with quantitative magnetization transfer.

PURPOSE: This study aimed to evaluate the reproducibility and specificity of quantitative magnetization transfer (qMT) imaging for monitoring spinal cord injuries (SCIs). METHODS: MRI scans were performed in anesthetized monkeys at 9.4T, before and serially after a unilateral lesion of the cervical spinal cord. A two-pool fitting model was used to derive qMT parameters. RESULTS: qMT measures were reproducible across normal subjects, with an average pool size ratio (PSR) of 0.086 ± 0.003 (mean ± SD) for gray matter, and 0.120 ± 0.005 for white matter, respectively. Compared with normal gray m

Isobolographic analysis of chlordiazepoxide and triazolam combinations in squirrel monkeys discriminating triazolam.

RATIONALE: The discriminative stimulus (DS) effects of chlordiazepoxide (CDP) differ from those of other typical benzodiazepine (BZ) agonists in that CDP does not always occasion full substitution for a BZ agonist DS. OBJECTIVES: The present study tested the hypothesis that the unusual DS effects of CDP may result from its relatively low intrinsic efficacy by examining the combinations of CDP and triazolam using isobolographic analysis in squirrel monkeys discriminating triazolam. METHODS AND RESULTS: Squirrel monkeys were previously trained to discriminate triazolam (0.03 mg/kg, i.v.) from

Discriminative-stimulus effects of clozapine in squirrel monkeys: comparison with conventional and novel antipsychotic drugs.

The effects of conventional and novel atypical antipsychotic drugs were compared to clozapine in squirrel monkeys that discriminated I.M. injections of clozapine (1.0 mg/kg) from saline in a two-lever drug discrimination procedure. Clozapine (0.03-3.0 mg/kg) produced dose-related increases in responding on the clozapine-associated lever with full substitution at the training dose in all monkeys. Dose-related increases in responding on the clozapine-associated lever and full substitution also were observed with structural analogues of clozapine including perlapine and fluperlapine (0.1-3.0 mg/k

Anatomy and physiology of saccadic long-lead burst neurons recorded in the alert squirrel monkey. I. Descending projections from the mesencephalon.

1. The intra-axonal recording and horseradish peroxidase injection technique together with spontaneous eye movement monitoring has been employed in alert behaving monkeys to study the discharge pattern and axonal projections of mesencephalic saccade-related long-lead burst neurons (LLBNs). 2. Most of the recovered axons (N = 21) belonged to two classes of neurons. The majority (N = 13) were identified as efferents of the superior colliculus and had circumscribed movement fields typical of collicular saccade-related burst neurons. This discharge pattern, their responses to electrical stimulatio

Role of otolith endorgans in the genesis of vestibular-visual conflict sickness (pitch) in the squirrel monkey (first report).

This experiment was designed to clarify each vestibular submodality's role in the genesis of vestibular-visual conflict sickness in pitch. We wanted to determine whether the ablation of the macula utriculi and macula sacculi, totally or separately, unilaterally and bilaterally, preserving the semicircular canals intact, could eliminate the conflict emesis in the squirrel monkey model. Observations were carried out over 5 months. In susceptible animals, the difference in conflict sickness scores between the pre- and the postutriculosacculectomy conditions was statistically significant. However,

Adaptation and habituation of motion-induced vomiting in squirrel monkeys.

Nonrestrained adult squirrel monkeys were found to be prolific vomiters when rotated in the horizontal plane for at least 1 h with visual cues available. When multiple daily spins were given, monkeys who vomited early during the first session tended to habituate during subsequent rotations. Subjects who vomited late during the first spin tended to vomit increasingly earlier for several days before the trend reverted to habituation. When a single rotation was continued for up to 8 h, emetic waves occurred with a high probability density for about 2 h, then ceased for many hours with an occasion

The anti-emetic properties of 1-sulpiride in a ground-based model of space motion sickness.

L-sulpiride, at a dose of 4 mg/kg, essentially abolished motion-induced emesis in a group of 6 squirrel monkeys undergoing horizontal rotation at 25 rpm, a terrestrial model of space motion sickness (SMS). Extrapyramidal side effects were not observed. In the absence of the drug, the usual emetic response returned. In comparison while typical neuroleptics were also strongly anti-emetic, they produced a considerable degree of rigidity and akinesia.

Suppression of behavior by food pellet-lithium chloride pairings in squirrel monkeys.

Responding by squirrel monkeys was maintained under a 30-response fixed-ratio schedule of food presentation; during different sessions responding produced either sucrose-flavored or banana-flavored food pellets. Pre-session administration of doses of lithium chloride (LiCl) less than 3.0 mEq/kg did not alter rates of responding whereas pairing either type of pellet with post-session injections of 1.8 mEq/kg LiCl suppressed both lever pressing and consumption during subsequent sessions in which that pellet type was available. When post-session injections of LiCl were discontinued, responding re
