We examined the effects of the acute administration of salmon calcitonin on phosphate metabolism in tumoral calcinosis. Neutron activation analysis was employed to determine total body calcium in C3H/St (Ha) female mice. Ninty-nine percent of total body calcium is in bone and loss of calcium was used as an index of osteoporosis. Heparin (500 U/kg B.I.D.) treatment for three months resulted in significant osteoporosis. Both human and salmon calcitonin (4 MRC U/Kg B.I.D.) prevented heparin induced osteoporosis. The results suggest that calcitonin may prevent pathological fractures in patients on anticoagulants and other osteoporosis inducing regimens.

A multicenter randomized double-blind trial on the use of synthetic salmon calcitonin (SCT) was carried out in 94 patients with acute pancreatitis. In addition to strict standard treatment--without aprotinin, atropine, or antacids--50 patients received daily 3 x 20 micrograms = 300 MRCU SCT intravenously and 44 patients received placebo for 6 days. An elastase I-like enzyme was purified to homogeneity from the pyloric caeca of North Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) and compared with porcine elastase I. The molecular weight and isoelectric point were estimated to be 27 kDa and over 9.3, respectively. The pH optimum was between 8.0 and 9.5, and the enzyme was unstable at pH values below 4. In two patients with sickle cell disease (one hemoglobin SC and one hemoglobin SS), central retinal artery occlusions developed. In one case, the occlusion followed a retrobulbar injection of lidocaine hydrochloride. Although the central retinal artery reperfused in each patient, many secondary peripheral retinal arteriolar occlusions remained.
