PURPOSE: Emerging biomarkers of cancer cachexia and their roles in sarcopenia and prognosis are poorly understood. Baseline assessments of anthropometrics, sarcopenia, cachexia status and biomarkers of cachexia were measured in patients with advanced cancer and healthy controls. Thereafter, relationships of the biomarkers with cachexia and sarcopenia were explored.
METHODS: A prospective case-control design was used, including 40 patients with advanced cancer and 40 gender, age-matched controls. Bioelectrical impedance [skeletal muscle index (SMI)] and hand dynamometry [hand grip strength (HG

Sarcopenia, a group of skeletal muscle diseases with high prevalence in older adults, usually manifests as loss of muscle mass and strength, and/or physical performance decline. Cognitive impairment, defined as impaired function in one or more cognitive domains such as memory, language, computation, comprehension, executive, and visuospatial skills, affects the quality of life and social functioning of patients. Both sarcopenia and cognitive impairment are common geriatric syndromes, and the two disorders interact and influence each other. Declining muscle function accelerates cognitive impair

With the increasing number of elderly individuals worldwide, the prevalence of age-related loss of muscle mass, referred to as sarcopenia, is expected to increase. Sarcopenia is a relatively new recognized syndrome, which is thought to affect 13% individuals worldwide, and the significant efforts made by different groups have advanced our understanding of the diagnosis, treatment, and natural history of this condition. However, the challenge is now to standardize its measurement and diagnosis to facilitate research in this area and a greater understanding of this condition and its management b

Nutrition assessment can be challenging in children with end-stage organ disease and in those requiring an organ transplant. The effect of poor nutrition status can exert long-lasting effects on children with end-stage organ disease requiring transplantation. Malnutrition, sarcopenia, and frailty are conditions that require provision of optimal nutrition to prevent or support the treatment of these conditions. Unfortunately, the literature on the assessment of malnutrition, sarcopenia, and frailty in pediatric end-stage organ disease is scarce, thus leading to confusion on how to effectively i

Sarcopenia is an age-related condition that involves a progressive decline in muscle mass and function, leading to increased risk of falls, frailty, and mortality. Although the exact mechanisms are not fully understood, aging-related processes like inflammation, oxidative stress, reduced mitochondrial capacity, and cell apoptosis contribute to this decline. Disruption of the circadian system with age may initiate these pathways in skeletal muscle, preceding the onset of sarcopenia. At present, there is no pharmacological treatment for sarcopenia, only resistance exercise and proper nutrition m

Sarcopenia is an age-related clinical complaint characterized by the progressive deterioration of skeletal muscle mass and strength over time. Type 2 diabetes (T2D) is associated with faster and more relevant skeletal muscle impairment. Both conditions influence each other, leading to negative consequences on glycemic control, cardiovascular risk, general health status, risk of falls, frailty, overall quality of life, and mortality. PubMed/Medline, Scopus, Web of Science, and Google Scholar were searched for research articles, scientific reports, observational studies, clinical trials, narrati

Sarcopenia and spinal spondylosis (SS) are important health challenges among older individuals; however, data regarding the effect of sarcopenia on SS are lacking. Hence, we aimed to organize the existing knowledge on the impact of sarcopenia on SS and explore potential issues in the available literature. We examined the trends and interventions regarding sarcopenia and SS, searching five databases (PubMed, Embase, CINHAL, Web of Science, and Cochrane Library) from inception to January 2023. Sarcopenia-related events were screened, selected, and reviewed, ultimately identifying 19 relevant stu

Significant loss of muscle mass may occur in cachexia and sarcopenia, which are major causes of mortality and disability. Cachexia represents a complex multi-organ syndrome associated with cancer and chronic diseases. It is often characterized by body weight loss, inflammation, and muscle and adipose wasting. Progressive muscle loss is also a hallmark of healthy aging, which is emerging worldwide as a main demographic trend. A great challenge for the health care systems is the age-related decline in functionality which threatens the independence and quality of life of elderly people. This biol

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of skeletal sarcopenia on the prognosis of intertrochanteric fracture in the elderly.
METHODS: We collected information on 144 patients with femoral intertrochanteric fracture (FIF). The influence of sarcopenia on the chance of death was determined using binary Probit regression analysis. For additional analysis, the Chow test was utilized to select the best distinguishing node in the instrumental activities of daily living (IADL) score. We looked for characteristics that were linked to a higher probability of death and a poor IAD

BACKGROUND: Sarcopenia is defined as decreased skeletal muscle mass and muscle functions (strength and physical performance). Muscle mass is measured by specific methods, such as bioelectrical impedance analysis and dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry. However, the devices used for these methods are costly and are usually not portable. A simple tool to screen for sarcopenia without measuring muscle mass might be practical, especially in developing countries. The aim of this study was to design a simple screening tool and to validate its performance in screening for sarcopenia in older adult cance

BACKGROUND: Gut microbiota dysbiosis and sarcopenia commonly occur in the elderly. Although the concept of the gut-muscle axis has been raised, the casual relationship is still unclear. This systematic review analyses the current evidence of gut microbiota effects on muscle/sarcopenia.
METHODS: A systematic review was performed in PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, and The Cochrane Library databases using the keywords (microbiota* OR microbiome*) AND (sarcopen* OR muscle). Studies reporting the alterations of gut microbiota and muscle/physical performance were analysed.
RESULTS: A total of 26 p

BACKGROUND: Chronic kidney disease (CKD) leads to insulin resistance (IR) and sarcopenia, which are associated with a high mortality risk in CKD patients; however, their pathophysiologies remain unclear. Recently, alterations in gut microbiota have been reported to be associated with CKD. We aimed to determine whether uremic dysbiosis contributes to CKD-associated IR and sarcopenia.
METHODS: CKD was induced in specific pathogen-free mice via an adenine-containing diet; control animals were fed a normal diet. Fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) was performed by oral gavage in healthy germ-f

Sarcopenia refers to a decrease in skeletal muscle mass and function. Because sarcopenia affects mortality, and causes significant disability, the clinical importance of sarcopenia is emerging. At first, sarcopenia was recognized as an age-related disease but, recently, it has been reported to be prevalent also in younger patients with autoimmune diseases. Specifically, the association of sarcopenia and autoimmune diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis has been studied in detail. Although the pathogenesis of sarcopenia in autoimmune diseases has not been elucidated, chronic inflammation is beli

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Sarcopenia, defined as loss of muscle mass, strength and function, is associated with adverse clinical outcomes in patients with cirrhosis. Despite improved understanding of the multifaceted pathogenesis, there are few established therapies to treat or prevent muscle loss in this population. This narrative review examines the available literature investigating the role of nutraceuticals for the prevention or treatment of muscle wasting in chronic liver disease.
METHODS: A comprehensive search or Medline and PubMED databases was conducted. Reference lists were screened to

Hyponatremia is the most frequent electrolyte disorder found in clinical practice, particularly in hospitalized elderly patients, where it is associated with fractures, falls, hospital readmission, prolonged hospital stay and increased mortality. Pathophysiologically, hyponatremia can be induced by the reduction in sodium or potassium body content, and/or the increase in water body content. Sarcopenia is an ageing-associated progressive and generalized loss of musculoskeletal mass and strength which leads to low physical performance, particularly in the frail elderly. Since muscle mass is the

Aging is accompanied by profound changes in many physiological functions, leading to a decreased ability to cope with stressors. Many changes are subtle, but can negatively affect nutrient intake, leading to overt malnutrition. Poor oral health may affect food selection and nutrient intake, leading to malnutrition and, consequently, to frailty and sarcopenia. On the other hand, it has been highlighted that sarcopenia is a whole-body process also affecting muscles dedicated to chewing and swallowing. Hence, muscle decline of these muscle groups may also have a negative impact on nutrient intake

Sarcopenia is a very important issue in rehabilitation medicine and nutritional care. The prevalence of sarcopenia in older people is approximately 50% in the rehabilitation setting, and also approximately 15% of inpatients without sarcopenia upon admission developed sarcopenia during hospitalization. There is a concern that secondary sarcopenia may occur iatrogenically during hospitalization. Iatrogenic sarcopenia is defined as sarcopenia caused by the activities of medical staff including doctors, nurses, or other health care professionals in healthcare facilities. Iatrogenic sarcopenia is c
