[The neuronal activity of the cat motor cortex during the differentiation between the reactions of placing support on the right and left paws acquired by stimulation of the parietal cortex of either hemisphere].

Cats were simultaneously trained to differentiate two conditioned reflexes: conditions placing of the right and the left forepaws electrical stimulation of the ipsilateral parietal cortices (area 5) serving as a conditioned stimulus (the right and the left areas correspondingly). Single unit responses of the shortest latencies in the motor cortex did not depend upon the cases whether parietal stimulation evoked placing or did not. Excitatory single unit responses occurring within 20-200 ms latency period from the stimulation onset were observed to be present only if the placing reaction was pe

Bombesin produces hypothermia in insulin treated rats.

Previous studies have shown that central injection of bombesin produces hypothermia in food-deprived, but not food satiated rats at normal ambient temperatures. The present study evaluated the effects of bombesin on core body temperature (Tb) and feeding behavior in rats pretreated with insulin. Administration of bombesin (0.25, 0.5, and 1.0 microgram) into the lateral cerebral ventricle produced hypothermia in rats injected with insulin (10 U/kg; i.m.). No significant change in core temperature was observed in control rats following bombesin. Insulin treatments significantly stimulated feedin

Amylinergic control of food intake.

Amylin is a pancreatic B-cell hormone that plays an important role in the regulation of nutrient fluxes. As such, amylin reduces food intake in laboratory animals and man, slows gastric emptying and it reduces postprandial glucagon secretion. Amylin deficiency which occurs concomitantly to insulin deficiency in diabetes mellitus, may therefore contribute to some of the major derangements associated with this disorder (hyperphagia, excessive glucagon secretion, accelerated rate of gastric emptying). The described actions of amylin all seem to depend on a direct effect of amylin on the area post

The effect of estrogen on appetite.

Such eating disorders as anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, and binge eating disorder are associated with significant morbidity and mortality in women. The etiology of these disorders and the causes of women's increased vulnerability to them remain obscure. The lack of understanding of the biological bases of normal and abnormal human eating behavior impedes development of effective pharmacologic treatment for eating disorders. A review of basic research, implicating estradiol in the physiologic control of eating in laboratory animals, shows potential heuristic and mechanistic significance for

Behaviorally specific inhibition of sham feeding by amylin.

To further characterize amylin's inhibitory action on feeding, we examined the effects of intraperitoneal injections of amylin on sham feeding of sucrose in food-deprived male rats with chronic gastric cannulas. Thirty and 100 microg/kg amylin reduced sham feeding, but did not terminate it or elicit the behavioral sequence of satiety. Real feeding of sucrose, but not sham feeding, was reduced after injection of 10 microg/kg amylin. Amylin's inhibitory effect on sham feeding appeared behaviorally specific because neither 30 nor 100 microg/kg amylin affected sham drinking of water in thirsty rat

Effect of Oxytocin on Hunger Discrimination.

Centrally and peripherally administered oxytocin (OT) decreases food intake and activation of the endogenous OT systems, which is associated with termination of feeding. Evidence gathered thus far points to OT as a facilitator of early satiation, a peptide that reduces the need for a meal that has already begun. It is not known, however, whether OT can diminish a feeling of hunger, thereby decreasing a perceived need to seek calories. Therefore, in the current project, we first confirmed that intraperitoneal (i.p.) OT at 0.3-1 mg/kg reduces food intake in deprived and non-deprived rats. We the

Prevalence and symptom pattern of pathologic esophageal acid reflux in patients with functional dyspepsia based on the Rome III criteria.

OBJECTIVES: To determine the prevalence and symptom pattern of pathologic esophageal acid reflux (PEAR) in patients with functional dyspepsia (FD) using the Rome III criteria, and to explore the value of a proton pump inhibitor (PPI) test in distinguishing the patients with and those without PEAR among FD patients. METHODS: Consecutive FD patients who fulfilled the Rome III criteria without predominant typical reflux symptoms (i.e., heartburn or regurgitation) were enrolled. All patients underwent upper endoscopy and an ambulatory 24-h pH monitoring. PEAR was defined as the percentage total t

Amylin: A Multi-Functional Pancreatic Hormone-A Review.

Amylin is a pancreatic beta-cell hormone that sits at a systems hub connecting key aspects of energy metabolism. Amylin physiologically controls satiation, slows gastric emptying and limits postprandial glucagon release, while its actions also link homeostatic eating controls with reward driven behaviours via defined central nervous system pathways. Further, at least under certain conditions, aggregating amylin exerts a strong pathophysiological impact on the destruction of pancreatic beta-cells in Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2D), providing a plausible explanation for why a T2D-like disease ent

Vagal Sensory Gut-Brain Pathways That Control Eating-Satiety and Beyond.

The vagus nerve is the body's primary sensory conduit from gut to brain, traditionally viewed as a passive relay for satiety signals. However, emerging evidence reveals a far more complex system-one that actively encodes diverse aspects of meal-related information, from mechanical stretch to nutrient content, metabolic state, and even microbial metabolites. This review challenges the view of vagal afferent neurons (VANs) as simple meal-termination sensors and highlights their specialized subpopulations, diverse sensory modalities, and downstream brain circuits, which shape feeding behavior, me

Protein Source Influences Acute Appetite and Satiety but Not Subsequent Food Intake in Healthy Adults.

BACKGROUND: Although current recommendations encourage plant-based dietary patterns, data is limited as to whether the equivalent substitution of animal-based protein-rich foods with plant-based versions impacts ingestive behavior. OBJECTIVES: To compare higher-protein preloads, varying in protein source, on appetite, satiety, and subsequent energy intake. METHODS: Thirty-two adults (age: 25 ± 1 y; body mass index (BMI) measured in kg/m2: 24.2 ± 0.5 kg/m2) randomly consumed 250 kcal, protein-preload beverages (24 g protein), varying in protein source [whey, soy, and pea protein isolates (WHE

Branched chain amino acids stimulate gut satiety hormone cholecystokinin secretion through activation of the umami taste receptor T1R1/T1R3 using an in vitro porcine jejunum model.

Branched chain amino acids (BCAAs) are essential amino acids involved in regulation of feed intake. The function of BCAAs on the central nervous system has been extensively studied, but effects of BCAAs on secretion of gut satiety hormones and their underlying mechanisms are largely unknown. In this study, we evaluated the distribution of gut hormones and amino acid receptors in the porcine GI tract and found cholecystokinin (CCK) and taste dimeric receptor type 1 member 1/3 (T1R1/T1R3) were predominantly expressed in the jejunum and functionally interrelated. We further evaluated the effects

Food volume effects on intake and appetite in women with binge-eating disorder and weight-matched controls.

OBJECTIVE: Our study examined the effect of food volume on later intake and appetite ratings in 15 women with binge eating disorder (BED) and 15 healthy control women. METHOD: On nonconsecutive days, lower-volume (250 ml/171 kcal) and higher-volume milk-based preloads (500 ml/171 kcal) were served in counterbalanced order. Thirty minutes later, appetite ratings and intake at a buffet-style test-lunch were assessed. RESULTS: Higher-volume preloads decreased hunger, desire to eat, excitement about eating, desire for dessert, and loss of control over eating at test meals, relative to lower-volu

Gastric emptying in patients with restricting and binge/purging subtypes of anorexia nervosa.

OBJECTIVES: Gastrointestinal symptoms are common in anorexia and in bulimia nervosa, but their relationship with gastric dysmotility and their possible improvement with refeeding are still debated. METHODS: Twenty-three anorexic patients (12 with the binge/purging and 11 with the restricting subtypes) were studied using an ultrasonographic gastric-emptying test, psychopathological questionnaires, and bowel symptom questionnaires, before and after 4 and 22 wk rehabilitation. RESULTS: Gastric symptom scores were markedly higher in patients than in controls and improved significantly with treat

The stomach, cholecystokinin, and satiety.

The stomach of the rhesus monkey empties liquids in a fashion that varies with the character of the solutions. Physiological saline empties exponentially. Glucose solutions empty biphasically--rapidly for the first minutes, then slowly and proportionately to glucose concentration to deliver glucose calories through the pylorus at a regulated rate (0.4 kcal/min). This prolonged and regulated second phase of gastric emptying depends on intestinal inhibition of the stomach. Cholecystokinin (CCK), a hormone released by food in the intestine, is an inhibitor of gastric emptying. In vitro receptor a

Evidence for central neuropeptidergic control of rumination in sheep.

Effects of intracerebroventricular (ICV) vs. intravenous (IV) administration of tetragastrin, pentagastrin, CCK8 and gastrin 17 on rumination were investigated in conscious sheep. Administered at 26 pmoles/kg ICV both tetra and pentagastrin induced a premature short (15-27 min) period of rumination only 24 +/- 7 and 23 +/- 9 min after food distribution in place of 112 +/- 44 min in controls. Similar but less pronounced effects were observed for ICV administration of an equimolar dose of gastrin 17 whereas CCK8 did not promote an early period of rumination despite its anorectic effects. Motivational effects of hunger on time estimation and delay of gratification in obese and nonobese boys.

Time estimates and ability to delay gratification of obese and nonobese boys were compared by a 2x2x2 factorial experiment in which hunger and edibility of incentives were manipulated. Hunger did not affect estimates of the obese boys, while it significantly shortened estimates made by the nonobese boys when the hunger drive was made either specific or nonspecific by varying incentive conditions. Although estimates of the nonobese boys were significantly shorter in the edible than nonedible incentive condition, edibility of incentives did not affect the estiamtes of the obese, suggesting a gen

The influence of homeostatic mechanisms on neural regulation of food craving in anorexia nervosa.

BACKGROUND: Restrictive food intake in anorexia nervosa (AN) has been related to an overactive cognitive control network inhibiting intuitive motivational responses to food stimuli. However, the influence of short-term homeostatic signaling on the neural regulation of cue-induced food craving in AN is still unclear. METHODS: Twenty-five women with AN and 25 matched normal-weight women were examined on two occasions after receiving either glucose or water directly into their stomach using a nasogastric tube. Participants were blinded to the type of infusion. An event-related functional magneti

Amylinergic control of food intake in lean and obese rodents.

Obesity develops despite a complex and seemingly well orchestrated network that controls eating, energy expenditure and ultimately body weight; many of the involved signals are derived from the gastrointestinal tract. It is assumed that this network as an entity aims at maintaining body weight and body adiposity at a relatively constant level, but the control mechanisms seem to fail at least if an individual is chronically exposed to an oversupply of food. This article summarizes recent findings about the role of amylin in the control of eating in lean and obese rodents. The article gives some

Micro- and macroanalyses of patterns within a meal in anorexia and bulimia nervosa.

Hospitalized women with anorexia nervosa and/or bulimia nervosa and dietarily restrained and unrestrained, clinically normal women were provided with a multi-item breakfast meal. Eating patterns and hunger and satiety ratings were assessed. Subjects were offered three foods which varied in fat and carbohydrate contents. Anorectic-restrictors differed most from the control subjects: they had a longer meal duration, a slower overall rate of eating, more frequent pauses during the meal, and more short bouts of eating. They also displayed abnormal ratings of hunger and satiety: they were generally

Lay facilitators as effective smoking cessation counselors.

The present study assessed the relative effectiveness of doctoral counseling students and lay facilitators in conducting smoking cessation programs. Subjects (55 women and 61 men) were randomly assigned to doctoral or to lay facilitators. Consistent with prediction, lay facilitators were at least as effective as doctoral students. Overall results were comparable to those obtained in previous work in this laboratory. Allowing a choice of preparation technique may in itself enhance treatment outcome. The ability of lay facilitators to achieve clinically effective results provides further support
