Scheuermann kyphosis is a structural hyperkyphosis defined radiographically as anterior wedging of ≥5° of at least three consecutive vertebral bodies. Typically, the disease develops during adolescence but may not present until adulthood. The etiology remains unknown. Indications for management include progressive deformity, pain, cosmesis, neurologic deficit, and cardiopulmonary compromise. Surgical intervention is indicated in patients with persistent pain and unacceptable deformity caused by significant kyphosis. Surgery can be performed through posterior-only, anterior-only, or combined an

This paper is designed to present an example from the domestic expert practice with the successful application of the radionuclide technique to visualize the bone lesions in a victim of a traffic accident having concomitant pathology of the osseous-articular apparatus (Scheuermann-Mau disease). The use of the osteoscintigraphic method made it possible not only to confirm the injury to the spinal column and the sternum but also to ensure its differential diagnostics from the concurrent pathology. Also, the method allowed to detect the exact location of the fractures. Moreover, it proved possibl

In recent years there has been spectacular progress in the approach to various disorders of the spinal column. Owing to improved methods of osteosynthesis there is no longer so much need for long periods of postoperative bed rest. Of all the scolioses, idiopathic scoliosis is most common. The vast majority of these cases are not clinically significant. What is seen in the remaining cases if left untreated is a progression in the curvature during growth. Progressive idiopathic scoliosis can be effectively treated using conservative methods. Screening at school is an important part of this proce

Idiopathic scoliosis is a complex three-dimensional deformity and in the thoracic region the essential lesion lies in the sagittal plane in the form of an area of inappropriate lordosis. The thoracic kyphosis is normally protected from buckling by being behind the axis of spinal column rotation but when the thoracic lordosis develops it brings the apical region anterior to this axis and thus under compression with resultant buckling failure of the spinal column. The condition of idiopathic thoracic scoliosis is the opposite to idiopathic hyperkyphosis (Scheuermann's disease), the latter being

STUDY DESIGN: A prospective randomized study.
OBJECTIVE: To introduce an operative technique that prevents proximal junctional kyphosis (PJK) in Scheuermann disease after a segmental posterior spinal instrumentation and fusion.
SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: PJK is the progression of kyphotic deformity at the proximal end of a construct >10 degrees, and it can be seen up to 30% after posterior Scheuermann kyphosis surgery. After posterior fusion the biomechanics of the spine changes and the loss of motion at the fused levels is compensated by increased motion at other unfused segments. As a res…

Sixty-seven patients who had a diagnosis of Scheuermann kyphosis and a mean angle of kyphosis of 71 degrees were evaluated after an average follow-up of thirty-two years (range, ten to forty-eight years) after the diagnosis. All sixty-seven patients completed a questionnaire; fifty-four had a physical examination and radiographs; fifty-two, pulmonary function testing; and forty-five, strength-testing of the trunk muscles. The results were compared with those in a control group of thirty-four subjects who were matched for age and sex. The patients who had Scheuermann kyphosis had more intense b

OBJECTIVE: To analyze the efficacy of the method for selecting the distal level of fusion in treatment of thoracic hyperkyphosis in patients with Scheuermann's disease.
BACKGROUND: The fusion area needs to include all the kyphotic deformity in Scheuermann patients; however, precise levels of the distal fixation have not been determined yet.
STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective cohort review.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Thirty-six patients were operated in the Department of Children and Adolescent Spine Pathology between 2007 and 2010. These patients were divided into two groups: in group I (n = 29) a low
