Linear scleroderma represents a unique form of localized scleroderma that primarily affects the pediatric population, with 67% of patients diagnosed before 18 years of age. When linear scleroderma occurs on the head, it is referred to as linear scleroderma en coup de sabre, given the resemblance of the skin lesions to the stroke of a sabre. Here we describe 3 pediatric patients with linear scleroderma en coup de sabre who presented with neurologic abnormalities before or concurrent with the diagnosis of their skin disease. Our patients' cases highlight the underrecognized relationship between

Scleroderma is a rare disorder of unknown etiology. Circumscribed scleroderma is a localized focal form. It may present as well defined elevated or depressed white or yellowish patches termed "morphea," or linear bands made up of a furrow with elevated ridges on the margins described as "coup de sabre." The oral-facial characteristics of circumscribed scleroderma in a ten year old afflicted female are described in detail.

Scleroderma is a rare connective tissue disorder with multisystem involvement with unknown and complex etiopathogenesis. Scleroderma is classified based on clinical and serological criteria and can be divided into two forms: localized scleroderma or systemic sclerosis, which can further be classified into limited systemic sclerosis or diffuse systemic sclerosis. There are few cases of aortic aneurysm and left ventricle aneurysm in systemic sclerosis but no such case in limited scleroderma in available literature. Here, we describe a rare case of limited systemic sclerosis with left ventricular

Parry-Romberg syndrome (PRS), also known as progressive facial hemiatrophy, is a rare neurocutaneous disorder characterized by progressive, unilateral atrophy of the facial tissues. It usually appears during childhood or early adulthood; however, adult-onset cases are increasingly being recognized. PRS significantly overlaps with localized scleroderma, especially the en coup de sabre (ECDS) subtype, indicating a common pathophysiological mechanism. We present a 52-year-old female patient with adult-onset PRS associated with ECDS. The patient was first diagnosed with localized scleroderma in 19

Coexistence of localized scleroderma with other autoimmune disorders is not seen frequently. It has been reported to occur with myasthenia gravis, hemiatrophy and systemic lupus erythematosus. In this report we describe an association wherein linear scleroderma coexisted with autoimmune haemolytic anaemia.

Linear scleroderma is a form of localized scleroderma that presents as band-like sclerotic lesions. When it occurs on the scalp or forehead, it is called "en coup de sabre scleroderma" (ECDS). Extracutaneous associations, mostly neurologic, have been described with ECDS. We report a patient with ECDS associated with multiple cerebral cavernomas. This serves to highlight the importance of neuroimaging and multidisciplinary team involvement in patients with ECDS.

En coup de sabre deformity (ECDS) is a form of localized scleroderma in the frontoparietal region caused by progressive subcutaneous tissue atrophy and bony defect. Although ECDS involves two layers, skin/subcutaneous tissue and bone, the existing literature mainly focuses only on treating the skin/subcutaneous tissue layer. In this case series, we aimed to propose a novel approach that includes the combined use of fat grafting and demineralized bone matrix (DBM). Four patients with ECDS deformity, operated between February 2016 and October 2018, were retrospectively evaluated. All the patient

Localized scleroderma is an uncommon disease, only infrequently encountered by dermatologists in private practices or even in larger academic centers. Because of its rarity, current treatment guidelines are mostly based on low-level clinical evidence and expert opinions. The aim of this study was to evaluate treatment strategies to treat localized scleroderma. A questionnaire was developed and sent to dermatologists in Hungary. 101 returned questionnaires were eligible for evaluation. 87.12% of clinicians employed local steroids. Antibiotics were the most preferred systemic agents. Penicillin

Linear scleroderma is a subtype of localized scleroderma generally observed in children, and may produce secondary bone and joint deformities. Its localization at the foot or ankle is rarely reported. A complete review of the literature reveals 21 cases of foot or ankle deformity due to linear scleroderma to which we add one case. The clinical and radiological aspects of the deformity, its pathogenesis, histological findings as well as orthopaedic management are presented and discussed.

Using antibodies to alpha-smooth muscle actin and desmin on paraffin-embedded formalin-fixed tissue sections, the authors demonstrate that fibroblastic cells of localized and systemic scleroderma lesions express features of smooth muscle differentiation. Eleven of eleven skin specimens of systemic sclerosis patients and two of four skin specimens of localized scleroderma displayed the presence of fibroblasts expressing alpha-smooth muscle actin, a cell population that predominated in areas of prominent collagen deposition. A similar fibroblastic phenotype was found in the esophagus, the liver,

Circumscribed scleroderma belongs to the groups of the diseases characterized by fibrosis of the skin and the deeper tissue. According to the published data, 47% to 76% patients with circumscribed scleroderma present antinuclear antibodies (ANA) as well as antibodies to Borrelia burgdorferi which is believed to be causative factor of the disease. The study was conducted in the group of 50 consecutive patients with circumscribed sclerosis (en plaque, deep linear, atrophoderma Pasini-Pierini). Antinuclear antibodies were detected in 18% of the patients in the titer of 1:40 to 1:320. There was st

Scleroderma is classified as two separate but related entities, a localized form and a systemic form. The classification scheme for morphea presented here is that of Peterson et al, which divides morphea into five categories: plaque, generalized, bullous, linear, and deep. Using this system, these authors estimated the incidence rate of localized scleroderma to be 27 new cases per million population per year. Overall survival was similar to that of the general population. There was a preponderance of female cases (approximately 3:1) for all forms of morphea except for linear scleroderma, which

Scleroderma en coup de sabre, a variant of localized scleroderma, is a disorder of unknown origin characterized by fibrosis of connective tissue. Rare complications of scleroderma en coup de sabre are orbital and intracerebral involvement. We describe a patient with scleroderma en coup de sabre in whom intracerebral and orbital lesions developed after 2 decades of disease duration. Clinically, she had epilepsy, impaired vision, and retro-ocular pain of the affected eye. A 12-month course of interferon-gamma stopped progression of visual symptoms caused by orbital fibrous tissue. To our knowled

Pseudo-scleroderma should not be confused with true scleroderma, the prognosis of which is unpredictable and often serious. Progressive acrosclerosis must be differentiated from Raynaud's disease, congenital or hereditary disorders of unknown aetiology: Werner's syndrome, acrogeria and progeria; Rothmund-Thomson's syndrome, Steinert's disease, phenylketonuria, disorders of glycogen metabolism; metabolic disorders: mutilating acropathies, scleromyxoedema, porphyria cutanea tarda; occupational and iatrogenic disorders: acroosteolysis, toxic epidermic syndrome (Spain), scleroderma-like change ind

Eosinophilic fasciitis is a rare disease in children. Although changes similar to linear scleroderma have been reported, the outcome is usually good. In this report, a 10-year-old boy who developed eosinophilic fasciitis without a good response to steroids is presented. He progressed to linear scleroderma within months. Our case reinforces the hypothesis that eosinophilic fasciitis may be an early manifestation or a variant of localized scleroderma similar to the other cases in the literature.

Juvenile scleroderma with its two varieties, juvenile localized scleroderma and systemic sclerosis (SSc), represents the third most frequent rheumatic disease in childhood. In juvenile SSc, new developments have been recently reported in the fields of classification and monitoring. The introduction of new classification criteria for adult SSc has stimulated new ideas on how to improve the performance of the provisional 2007 PRES/ACR/EULAR pediatric criteria. The introduction of a multidimensional severity score, named "J4S," which includes parameters on growth, skin, and internal organ involve

We describe a 4-year-old girl with hemifacial atrophy. She had a linear white-colored sclerotic plaque on the right submandibular area of skin. Histologic findings of the lesion were consistent with a diagnosis of scleroderma. The relationship between progressive facial hemiatrophy and linear scleroderma are discussed. We think that linear scleroderma of childhood and hemifacial atrophy have considerable clinical overlap and these two syndromes appear to be manifestations of the same or related pathogenic processes. Recently, the beneficial effects of 1.25-dihydroxyvitamin D3 (calcitriol) were
