[Aortoesophageal fistula by swallowed foreign body--a case report and review of the literature].

A case of aortoesophageal fistula is presented. The etiology, symptoms, and diagnosis of aortoesophageal fistula are reviewed. A 22-year-old nurse died just after massive hematemesis. The autopsy finding revealed massive hemorrhage in the gastrointestinal tract and conspicuously pale organs. The fistula between the thoracic descending aorta and esophagus was observed. Microscopically, acute inflammation and blood clots containing bacterial colonies were found around the fistulous tract. Eight days before her death, she felt retrosternal sticking pain just after eating a baked slice of sea brea

Heavy metals produce toxicity, oxidative stress and apoptosis in the marine teleost fish SAF-1 cell line.

The use of cell lines to test the toxicity of aquatic pollutants is a valuable alternative to fish bioassays. In this study, fibroblast SAF-1 cells from the marine gilthead seabream (Sparus aurata L.) were exposed for 24 h to the heavy metals Cd, Hg, MeHg (Methylmercury), As or Pb and the resulting cytotoxicity was assessed. Neutral red (NR), MTT-tetrazolio (MTT), crystal violet (CV) and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) viability tests showed that SAF-1 cells exposed to the above heavy metals produced a dose-dependent reduction in the number of viable cells. Methylmercury showed the highest toxicit

Evaluating Plasma-Handling Effects on Extracellular Vesicle RNA Yield and Cargo Profiles in Fish: A Methodological Insight.

Extracellular vesicle (EV)-derived RNA (EV-RNA) is emerging as a valuable biomarker source in aquatic species. However, the composition and stability of long RNA species, particularly messenger RNA (mRNAs) and long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs), remain largely unexplored in teleosts. Pre-analytical factors such as input plasma volume and storage conditions may influence RNA recovery, especially in low-input samples like fish plasma. Here, we evaluated the effects of input sample volume and freezing storage on EV-RNA yield and integrity in gilthead sea bream (Sparus aurata) plasma using the exoRNea

Dietary choline supplementation attenuated high-fat diet-induced inflammation through regulation of lipid metabolism and suppression of NFκB activation in juvenile black seabream (Acanthopagrus schlegelii).

The present study aimed to investigate whether dietary choline can regulate lipid metabolism and suppress NFκB activation and, consequently, attenuate inflammation induced by a high-fat diet in black sea bream (Acanthopagrus schlegelii). An 8-week feeding trial was conducted on fish with an initial weight of 8·16 ± 0·01 g. Five diets were formulated: control, low-fat diet (11 %); HFD, high-fat diet (17 %); and HFD supplemented with graded levels of choline (3, 6 or 12 g/kg) termed HFD + C1, HFD + C2 and HFD + C3, respectively. Dietary choline decreased lipid content in whole body and tissues.

Dietary lutein mitigates high fat diet and lipopolysaccharide induced intestinal barrier dysfunction and immune inflammatory responses in juvenile black seabream (Acanthopagrus schlegelii).

High-fat diets (HFDs) can impair intestinal homeostasis and innate immune function in fish, whereas nutritional immunomodulation may provide an effective strategy to improve immune response to LPS challenge in aquaculture species. This study investigated whether dietary lutein (LU) alleviates HFD-induced immune dysfunction and improves the response of juvenile black seabream (Acanthopagrus schlegelii) to lipopolysaccharide (LPS) challenge. Fish were fed a normal-fat diet containing 8% lipid, an HFD containing 18% lipid, or the HFD supplemented with 0.125%, 0.25% and 0.50% LU for 10 weeks, foll

Tamoxifen persistently disrupts the humoral adaptive immune response of gilthead seabream (Sparus aurata L.).

There is increasing concern about the possible effect of pharmaceutical compounds may have on the fish immune system. Bath exposition of 17α-ethynylestradiol (EE2), a synthetic estrogen used in oral contraceptives, altered the immune response of the gilthead seabream (Sparus aurata L.), a marine hermaphrodite teleost. Tamoxifen (Tmx) is a selective estrogen-receptor modulator used in hormone replacement therapy, the effects of which are unknown in fish immunity. This study aims to investigate the effects of dietary administration of EE2 (5 μg/g food) and Tmx (100 μg/g food) on the immune respo

Post-treatment of biologically treated wastewater containing organic contaminants using a sequence of H2O2 based advanced oxidation processes: photolysis and catalytic wet oxidation.

In this paper the feasibility of a multi-barrier treatment (MBT) for the regeneration of synthetic industrial wastewater (SIWW) was evaluated. Industrial pollutants (orange II, phenol, 4-chlorophenol and phenanthrene) were added to the effluent of municipal wastewater treatment plant. The proposed MBT begins with a microfiltration membrane pretreatment (MF), followed by hydrogen peroxide photolysis (H2O2/UVC) and finishing, as a polishing step, with catalytic wet peroxide oxidation (CWPO) using granular activated carbon (GAC) at ambient conditions. During the microfiltration step (0.7 μm) the

Complement consumption by Photobacterium damselae subsp. piscicida in seabream, red porgy and seabass normal and immune serum. Effect of the capsule on the bactericidal effect.

A virulent strain of Photobacterium damselae subsp. piscicida (Pdp) was grown without (C form) or with (C+ form) glucose supplementation, the latter to enhance capsule formation. Both forms were resistant to killing by normal serum of seabream, red porgy and seabass. However, the C form was killed by immune serum of all three fish species while the C+ form was killed only by seabream and red porgy sera and to a lesser extent than the C form. Both C and C+ forms consumed complement in normal serum and this consumption was enhanced by precoating the bacteria in specific fish antibody. Complement

Mucins as diagnostic and prognostic biomarkers in a fish-parasite model: transcriptional and functional analysis.

Mucins are O-glycosylated glycoproteins present on the apex of all wet-surfaced epithelia with a well-defined expression pattern, which is disrupted in response to a wide range of injuries or challenges. The aim of this study was to identify mucin gene sequences of gilthead sea bream (GSB), to determine its pattern of distribution in fish tissues and to analyse their transcriptional regulation by dietary and pathogenic factors. Exhaustive search of fish mucins was done in GSB after de novo assembly of next-generation sequencing data hosted in the IATS transcriptome database (www.nutrigroup-iat

Seasonal effect on biomarkers of exposure to petroleum hydrocarbons in fish from Kuwait's marine area.

The aquatic biota of the Arabian Gulf deals with exposure to chronic oil pollution, several constituents of which cause induction of Cytochrome P450 1A that serves as a biomarker of AhR ligand exposure. In this study, fluorescent aromatic compounds (FACs) in bile and 7-ethoxyresorufin-o-deethylase (EROD) catalytic activity were determined as a measure of exposure biomarkers in two fish species, yellow fin seabream (Acanthopagrus latus) and tonguesole (Cynoglossus arel) captured from Kuwait Bay and outside the Bay area. FACs in fish bile determined by using fixed-wavelength fluorescence (FF) sh

Identification and expression of a novel class of glutathione-S-transferase from amphioxus Branchiostoma belcheri with implications to the origin of vertebrate liver.

Glutathione-S-transferases have been identified in all the living species examined so far, yet little is known to date about them in amphioxus, a model organism for insights into the origin and evolution of vertebrates. We have isolated a cDNA encoding an amphioxus (Branchiostoma belcheri) glutathione-S-transferase with a predicted molecular mass of approximately 26 kDa, from the gut cDNA library. The glutathione-S-transferase had 43.7-51.8% identity to most glutathione-S-transferases identified from aquatic organisms including fish and green alga, but it was much less identical (<27%) to othe

The type II interleukin-1 receptor (IL-1RII) of the bony fish gilthead seabream Sparus aurata is strongly induced after infection and tightly regulated at transcriptional and post-transcriptional levels.

Interleukin-1beta (IL-1beta) is the prototypic pro-inflammatory cytokine. All the biological effects of IL-1beta are mediated through interaction with type 1 IL-1 receptor (IL-1RI), whereas another receptor, called type 2 IL-1R (IL-1RII), lacks an intracellular signalling domain and acts as a decoy receptor that down-regulates responses to IL-1beta. Although both receptors are present in bony fish, their expression and biological role in the regulation of IL-1beta activity in non-mammalian vertebrates remain to be established. In this study, a homologue of mammalian IL-1RII was isolated and ch

Screening of pesticides and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in feeds and fish tissues by gas chromatography coupled to high-resolution mass spectrometry using atmospheric pressure chemical ionization.

This paper reports a wide-scope screening for detection and identification of pesticides and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in feeds and fish tissues. QuEChERS sample treatment was applied, using freezing as an additional cleanup. Analysis was carried out by gas chromatography coupled to hybrid quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometry with atmospheric pressure chemical ionization (GC-(APCI) QTOF MS). The qualitative validation was performed for over 133 representative pesticides and 24 PAHs at 0.01 and 0.05 mg/kg. Subsequent application of the screening method to aquaculture sample

A possible new role for fish retinal serotonin-N-acetyltransferase-1 (AANAT1): Dopamine metabolism.

Serotonin-N-acetyltransferase (arylalkylamine-N-acetyltransferase, AANAT) is the key enzyme in the generation of melatonin rhythms in the pineal gland and retinal photoreceptors. Rhythmic AANAT activity drives rhythmic melatonin production in these tissues. Two AANATs, AANAT1 and AANAT2, are present in teleost fish species. Different spatial expression patterns, enzyme kinetics and substrate preferences suggest that they may have different functions. Enzyme activity assays revealed that recombinant seabream and zebrafish AANAT1s, but not AANAT2s, acetylate dopamine with kinetic characteristics

Co-encapsulation of chrysophsin-1 and epirubicin in PEGylated liposomes circumvents multidrug resistance in HeLa cells.

Chrysophsin-1, an amphipathic alpha-helical antimicrobial peptide, is isolated from the gills of the red sea bream and possesses different structure and mechanism(s) in comparison with traditional multidrug resistance (MDR) modulators. For the purpose of reducing off-target normal cell toxicity, it is rational to incorporate chrysophsin-1 and epirubicin in a PEGylated liposomal formulation. In the present study, we report a multifunctional liposomes with epirubicin as an antineoplastic agent and an apoptosis inducer, as well as chrysophsin-1 as a MDR transporter inhibitor and an apoptosis modu

Disruption of gut integrity and permeability contributes to enteritis in a fish-parasite model: a story told from serum metabolomics.

BACKGROUND: In the animal production sector, enteritis is responsible for serious economic losses, and intestinal parasitism is a major stress factor leading to malnutrition and lowered performance and animal production efficiency. The effect of enteric parasites on the gut function of teleost fish, which represent the most ancient bony vertebrates, is far from being understood. The intestinal myxozoan parasite Enteromyxum leei dwells between gut epithelial cells and causes severe enteritis in gilthead sea bream (Sparus aurata), anorexia, cachexia, growth impairment, reduced marketability and

Identification of a β1 integrin isoform with restricted tissue expression in a teleost fish.

The composition and organisation of extracellular matrix (ECM)-related molecules change during development. These components interact with different cell surface receptors to modulate the transduction of signals for cell growth, differentiation, migration, proliferation and apoptosis. Previous findings in the teleost fish gilthead seabream (Sparus aurata L., Teleostei), a marine protandrous hermaphrodite fish, showed that endocrine and immune stimuli are able to modulate the expression of ECM-related molecules, as well as specific correlations between them. In the present study, quantitative r

Arachidonic acid reduces the stress response of gilthead seabream Sparus aurata L.

In this study the influence of the dietary level of the fatty acid arachidonic acid (ArA, 20:4n-6) was determined on the acute stress response and osmoregulation of adult gilthead seabream Sparus aurata L. Seabream were fed a diet containing either 0.9% or 2.4% of total fatty acids as ArA for 18 days before being subjected to a 5 min period of net confinement. Prior to this stressor, a subgroup of fish from both dietary treatment groups was treated with acetylsalicylic acid (ASA), an irreversible blocker of cyclooxygenase (COX). Cholinesterase activity in gilthead seabream (Sparus aurata) larvae: Characterization and sensitivity to the organophosphate azinphosmethyl.

Assessment of cholinesterase (ChE) inhibition is widely used as a specific biomarker for evaluating the exposure and effects of non-target organisms to anticholinesterase agents. Cholinesterase and carboxylesterase activities have been measured in larvae of gilthead seabream, Sparus aurata, during the endogenous feeding stage, and ChE was characterized with the aid of diagnostic substrates and inhibitors. The results of the present study showed that whole-body ChE of yolk-sac seabream larvae possesses typical properties of acetylcholinesterase (AChE) with a apparent affinity constant (K(m)) of
