Modeling seawater intrusion along the Alabama coastline using physical and machine learning models to evaluate the effects of multiscale natural and anthropogenic stresses.

Seawater intrusion threatens groundwater resources in coastal regions, including southern Baldwin County, Alabama, where the freshwater-salt … Coastal lowlands aquifer system (CL1) in the southern Baldwin County region is more susceptible to sea level rise and groundwater extraction than deeper aquifers. Based on these findings, a cross-sectional numerical model (physics approach) for the CL1 aquifer was developed to evaluate tidal and storm surge effects, using Tropical Storm Claudette (June 2021) as …

Microbial Communities Display Key Functional Differences between Reference and Restored Salt Marshes.

Salt marshes, despite their ecological importance (i.e., carbon sequestration) and rapid decline due to climate change and sea-level rise. Salt marsh ecosystems provide essential services such as removal of pollutants, carbon sequestration, and protection of coastal lands from storm surges. These services are strongly influenced by plant productivity, which is closely linked to microbial processes such as biogeochemical cycling of carbon, nitrogen, and sulfur. To retain carbon sequestration and other ecological functions, substantial efforts are currently directed towards coastal marsh restora

Effect of biodegradable and conventional microplastic exposure in combination with seawater inundation on the coastal terrestrial plant Plantago coronopus.

Coastal ecosystems face a multitude of pressures including plastic pollution and increased flood risk due to sea level rise and the frequency and severity of storms. Experiments seldom examine multiple stressors such as these, but here we quantified the effect of microplastics (polyethylene terephthalate (PET): a durable plastic and polybutylene adipate terephthalate (PBAT): a biodegradable polymer), in combination with simulated seawater inundation on the coastal species Plantago coronopus. After 35-days exposure to plastic (0.02 g.Kg-1, <300 μm diameter), P. coronopus were flooded to pot hei…

Flooding by sea and brackish waters enhances mobility of Cd, Zn and Pb from airborne dusts in coastal soils.

Sea level rise and extreme weather conditions caused by climatic changes enhance the frequency and length of submersion events in coastal soils, causing deposited airborne dusts to get in contact with marine salts. The behaviour of Cd, Zn and Pb from pedogenetic minerals and from dusts from mining and smelting activities, added to two soils under different agricultural management (arable and grassland) was examined after soil flooding for 1, 7 and 30 days with waters of increasing salinities (0, 4.37, 8.75, 17.25 and 34.5 g L-1). A rain water event following 1 d flooding released an extra amou…

Distinguishing the Effects of Stress Intensity and Stress Duration in Plant Responses to Salinity.

Species-specific variation in response to stress is a key driver of ecological patterns. As climate change alters stress regimes, coastal plants are experiencing intensifying salinity stress due to sea-level rise and more intense storms. This study investigates the variation in species' responses to presses and pulses of salinity stress in five glycophytic and five halophytic species to determine whether salinity intensity, duration, or their interaction best explain patterns of survival and performance. In salinity stress exposure experiments, we manipulated the intensity and duration of sali

Identifying driving hydrogeomorphic factors of coastal wetland downgrading using random forest classification models.

Coastal wetlands provide critical ecosystem services but are experiencing disruptions caused by inundation and saltwater intrusion under intensified climate change, sea-level rise, and anthropogenic activities. Recent studies have shown that these disturbances downgraded coastal wetlands mainly through affecting their hydrological processes. However, research on what is the most critical driver for wetland downgrading and how it affects coastal wetlands is still in its infancy. This study examined drivers of three types of wetland downgrading, including woody wetland loss, emergent herbaceous

Participatory and Spatial Analyses of Environmental Justice Communities' Concerns about a Proposed Storm Surge and Flood Protection Seawall.

In response to increasing threats from sea-level rise and storm surge, the City of Charleston, South Carolina, and the US Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) propose constructing a seawall around the Charleston peninsula. The proposed seawall will terminate close to lower wealth, predominantly minority communities. These communities are identified as environmental justice (EJ) communities due to their history of inequitable burdens of industrial and urban pollution and proximity to highways and US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) designated Superfund sites. The present study documents communi

Climate change and health care facilities: A risk analysis framework through a mapping review.

INTRODUCTION: Climate change (CC) has been identified as the biggest global health threat of the 21st century. Although health care facilities (HCF) play a central role in the care of populations, there has been no comprehensive assessment of the impact of CC on HCF. The objective of our study was to highlight the components of HCFs affected by CC through a mapping review of the literature. METHODS: To meet our objective, we first assessed the place of HCFs in relation to CC in the scientific literature and in the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) reports. Bibliometric data fro

Surveillance and Control of Antibiotic Resistance in the Mediterranean Region.

Antibiotic resistance is one of the most relevant problems in the healthcare: the growth of resistant microorganisms in healthcare settings is a worrisome threat, raising length to stay (LOS), morbidity and mortality in those patients. The importance of the antibiotic resistance and its spread around the world, gave rise to the activation of several surveillance systems, based especially on the collection of laboratory data to local or national level. The objective of this work is to carry out a review of the scientific literature existing on the topic and scientific activities related to surv

The effect of different volumes of fluid resuscitation on traumatic-hemorrhagic shock at high altitude in the unacclimated rat.

The effects of different volumes of fluid resuscitation on traumatic hemorrhagic shock in unacclimated rats to high altitude were investigated. Seventy-eight Wistar rats were transported to LaSa, Tibet, 3760 meters above sea level, and traumatic hemorrhagic shock was induced by right-femur fracture plus bleeding to 45 mmHg of mean arterial pressure (MAP) for 1 h under the anesthesia of sodium pentobarbital (40 mg/kg, i.p.). Experiments were conducted in two series. In series I, 36 rats were equally divided into six groups: sham-operated, untreated (traumatic shock without fluid infusion), and

Digitalis toxicity during acute hypoxia in intact conscious dogs.

Intact, conscious dogs were studied under normal and hypobaric conditions to assess the influence of acute hypoxia on the ability of the animals to tolerate ouabain. Animals were made acutely hypoxic by exposure to hypobaric conditions in a chamber maintained at 446 mm Hg. The ability of the dogs to tolerate ouabain was determined by administering intravenously 7.5 mug/kg of the drug as a loading dose followed by infusion at a rate of 3.0 mug/kg/min to an end point consisting of the development of ventricular or atrioventricular junctional tachycardia. Eight dogs, each acting as its own contro

Seasonal variation in plasma thyroid hormone concentrations in coastal versus inland populations of juvenile American alligators (Alligator mississippiensis): influence of plasma iodide concentrations.

Thyroid hormones, essential for normal growth and health, are associated with changes in temperature, photoperiod, and reproduction. Iodide, a necessary element for thyroid hormone production, varies in diet, and is more abundant in estuarine environments, which could alter thyroid hormone variation. However, associations between thyroid hormone concentrations in animals from marine versus freshwater environments, which could become more pertinent with rising sea levels associated with global climate change, are not well studied. To determine the importance of dietary iodide in seasonal variat

Climate resilient adaptation of coastal amenities for wellbeing.

Blue spaces are recognised as vital public resources that support human health and wellbeing through pathways such as physical activity, psychological restoration and social connection. Coastal environments are especially distinctive for their multisensory stimuli, expansive vistas and cultural significance, with benefits shaped by environmental quality, accessibility and usability. Climate change threatens these benefits via extreme events, such as storm surges and flooding, and gradual processes, including rising sea levels, erosion and warming temperatures, which can also alter people's per

Ocean acidification and its regulating factors in the East China Sea off the Yangtze River estuary.

This study examines the seasonal variations in carbonate system parameters in the East China Sea (ECS) off the Yangtze River estuary (YRE) and analyzes the contributions of anthropogenic CO₂ and eutrophication to acidification. Carbonate parameters data were collected during summer 2019 and combined winter 2011. During winter, acidification is primarily driven by rising atmospheric CO₂, with minimal impact from biological processes. In contrast, summer presents a different pattern: enhanced photosynthesis due to eutrophication in surface waters helps mitigate the acidification effects of atmos

Navigating the nexus: climate dynamics and microplastics pollution in coastal ecosystems.

Microplastics (MPs) pollution is an emerging environmental health concern, impacting soil, plants, animals, and humans through their entry into the food chain via bioaccumulation. Human activities such as improper solid waste dumping are significant sources that ultimately transport MPs into the water bodies of the coastal areas. Moreover, there is a complex interplay between the coastal climate dynamics, environmental factors, the burgeoning issue of MPs pollution and the complex web of coastal pollution. We embark on a comprehensive journey, synthesizing the latest research across multiple d

Reevaluating the wave power-salt marsh retreat relationship.

Salt marshes are threatened by rising sea levels and human activities, and a major mechanism of marsh loss is edge retreat or erosion. To understand and predict loss in these valuable ecosystems, studies have related erosion to marsh hydrodynamics and wave characteristics such as wave power. Across global studies, erosion is reported to be largely linearly related to wave power, with this relationship having implications for the resilience of marshes to extreme events such as storms. However, there is significant variability in this relationship across marshes because of marsh heterogeneity an

Burkholderia pseudomallei distribution in Australasia is linked to paleogeographic and anthropogenic history.

Burkholderia pseudomallei is the environmental bacillus that causes melioidosis; a disease clinically significant in Australia and Southeast Asia but emerging in tropical and sub-tropical regions around the globe. Previous studies have placed the ancestral population of the organism in Australia with a single lineage disseminated to Southeast Asia. We have previously characterized B. pseudomallei isolates from New Guinea and the Torres Strait archipelago; remote regions that share paleogeographic ties with Australia. These studies identified regional biogeographical boundaries. In this study,

Salinity reduces site quality and mangrove forest functions. From monitoring to understanding.

Mangroves continue to be threatened across their range by a mix of anthropogenic and climate change-related stress. Climate change-induced salinity is likely to alter the structure and functions of highly productive mangrove systems. However, we still lack a comprehensive understanding of how rising salinity affects forest structure and functions because of the limited availability of mangrove field data. Therefore, based on extensive spatiotemporal mangrove data covering a large-scale salinity gradient, collected from the world's largest single tract mangrove ecosystem - the Bangladesh Sundar
