Feasibility of the HEAR-aware App for Hearing Loss Self-Management: A Nonrandomized Intervention Study to Examine Intervention Acceptability and the Stages-of-Change Concept.

OBJECTIVES: The HEAR-aware project targets adults ≥50 years who were recently diagnosed with hearing loss and declined hearing aids, but were open for support via a smartphone app on different target behaviors (TBs). The HEAR-aware app, based on Ecological Momentary Assessment and Ecological Momentary Intervention (EMA, EMI), contains educational materials ("snippets") tailored partly to the user's experienced listening situations. The app aims to increase adults' TB-specific readiness to take action on hearing problems. The present study focused on examining feasibility regarding three novel

Identification, design, and in vivo proof of concept of a shared APC neoantigen delivered via a self-amplifying RNA containing virus-like nanoparticle for cancer vaccination.

Colorectal Cancer (CRC) accounts for the second highest number of cancer-related mortalities rate worldwide, and its incidence and mortality is expected to continue to increase in the coming years. Over 80% of CRC cases are caused by mutation in the Adenomatous Polyposis Coli (APC) gene, a tumor suppressor gene involved in the Wnt signaling pathway that prevents uncontrolled cell growth. Familial Adenomatous Polyposis (FAP) is a rare, inherited, pediatric disorder characterized by the development of countless adenomatous (benign) polyps in the colon and/or rectum, and over the patient's lifeti

Proof-of-Concept Study of Using Supervised Machine Learning Algorithms to Predict Self-Care and Glycemic Control in Type 1 Diabetes Patients on Insulin Pump Therapy.

OBJECTIVE: Using supervised machine learning algorithms (SMLAs), we built models to predict the probability of type 1 diabetes mellitus patients on insulin pump therapy for meeting insulin pump self-management behavioral (IPSMB) criteria and achieving good glycemic response within 6 months. METHODS: This was a single-center retrospective chart review of 100 adult type 1 diabetes mellitus patients on insulin pump therapy (≥6 months). Three SMLAs were deployed: multivariable logistic regression (LR), random forest (RF), and K-nearest neighbor (k-NN); validated using repeated three-fold cross-va

Best laid plans...pre and postpartum comparison of self and spouse concepts in primiparous Lamaze couples who share delivery and those who do not.

The present study investigated pre and postpartum attitudes toward self, spouse, and ideal of 47 primiparous couples who chose the psychoprophylactic (Lamaze) method of childbirth, 34 who were able to share the delivery as planned (y/y), and 13 who were blocked from doing so due to complications necessitating cesarean sections (y/n). Osgood Semantic Differential ratings revealed that both y/n men and women perceived self and various ideal concepts lower pre and postnatally than did y/y subjects. Both groups of women showed statistically significant increases pre-post in activity for several co

Are university students with childhood neglect experiences more likely to engage in online trolling? The mediating role of depressive symptoms and the moderating role of self-concept clarity.

BACKGROUND: Given the prevalence of online trolling among university students, identifying its contributing factors is essential. However, few studies have explored the potential role of past family experience in facilitating this behavior, or the mediating and buffering mechanisms underlying this relationship. OBJECTIVE: This study sought to examine the relationship between childhood neglect and online trolling among university students, as well as the mediating mechanism of depressive symptoms and the moderating mechanism of self-concept clarity in this relationship. METHODS: A three-wave

Examining the dynamics of the implicit and the explicit self-concept in social anxiety: changes in the Implicit Association Test-Anxiety and the Social Phobia Anxiety Inventory following treatment.

In this study, we analyzed changes in the strength of self-anxiety associations--as measured by the Implicit Association Test-Anxiety (IAT-Anxiety; Egloff & Schmukle, 2002) and the Social Phobia Anxiety Inventory (SPAI; Turner, Beidel, Dancu, & Stanley, 1989)--following treatment of social anxiety. We assessed socially anxious participants (N = 24) prior to and following a group-based treatment; and we assessed healthy controls (N = 24) at matched time points. Results showed (a) higher implicit and explicit anxiety in socially anxious participants (as compared to controls) prior to treatment a

Evaluation of a hybrid telehealth care pathway for patients with axial spondyloarthritis including self-sampling at home: results of a longitudinal proof-of-concept mixed-methods study (TeleSpactive).

Patients with axial spondyloarthritis (axSpA) require close monitoring to achieve the goal of sustained disease remission. Telehealth can facilitate continuous care while relieving scarce healthcare resources. In a mixed-methods proof-of-concept study, we investigated a hybrid telehealth care axSpA pathway in patients with stable disease over 6 months. Patients used a medical app to document disease activity (BASDAI and PtGA bi-weekly, flare questionnaire weekly). To enable a remote ASDAS-CRP (TELE-ASDAS-CRP), patients used a capillary self-sampling device at home. Monitoring results were disc

Sexual self-concept and sexual dysfunctions in men with fulfilled versus unfulfilled desire for children 15 years after onset: a propensity score-matched analysis from the Bavarian Men's Health-Study.

INTRODUCTION: An unmet desire for children may challenge masculine identity and therefore affect sexual self-concept and sexual functioning. The aim of this study was to examine long-term differences in sexual self-concept and sexual dysfunctions between men with fulfilled versus unfulfilled unmet desire for children. METHODS: Data were derived from the Bavarian Men's Health-Study, a cross-sectional survey including middle-aged men. The unmet desire for children was defined according to the World Health Organization criteria and assessed via structured interviews. Participants completed stand

Testing the vulnerability and scar model of the relationship between self-concept, social support and anxiety symptoms among children of HIV-infected parents in China: A 3-year longitudinal study.

BACKGROUND: Mental illness is a great concern among children of HIV-infected parents (COHIP), who are at their crucial stage of psychosocial development. It has been shown that self-concept (SC) and social support (SS) are important correlates of anxiety symptoms (AS), however, nature of the causality remained unclear. METHODS: A 3-year longitudinal study was conducted in rural Central China, where many people were infected with HIV through unhygienic blood donation. A total of 195 COHIP (mean age: 12.6 years, 49.2% male) completed the baseline assessment and were followed for three years. Cr

'Commanded to be ill, accused of being well' a lived-experience-led, qualitative investigation of service user perspectives on the impact of emotionally unstable personality disorder diagnosis on self-concept.

BACKGROUND: Emotionally unstable personality disorder (EUPD) is a mental disorder impairing health and functioning and increasing suicide risk and it is a stigmatised condition among healthcare professionals. EUPD diagnosis may significantly affect self-concept, yet no previous investigation has explicitly examined this. AIMS: To explore service user perspectives on (a) the impact of EUPD diagnosis on self-concept and (b) mediators of positive and negative impacts. METHODS: Service user-led, qualitative semi-structured interviews with n = 10 participants with EUPD. RESULTS: Perceived impact

Changes in self-concept, cardiovascular endurance and muscular strength of children with spina bifida aged 8 to 13 years in response to a 10-week physical-activity programme: a pilot study.

The purposes of this study were to document the self-concept, cardiovascular endurance and isometric muscular strength of children with spina bifida, and to examine the changes in these variables in response to a structured 10-week exercise programme. Eight children trained for about 1 hour a week for 10 weeks, while the five control-group children did not participate in the physical-activity programme. The exercise group improved significantly on five of eight criterion means, while the control group showed no significant improvements. This programme represents an initial attempt to delineate

Living with fibromyalgia: Scoping review of patients' lived experience.

BACKGROUND: Fibromyalgia (FM) profoundly affects not only physical functioning but also the lived experience of time, space, the body, selfhood, and relationships. Although many qualitative studies describe these challenges, their heterogeneity makes it difficult to identify common experiential patterns. The aim of this study was to synthesize first-person qualitative accounts of adults with fibromyalgia in order to identify the core experiential structures that characterize how the condition transforms temporality, embodiment, selfhood, spatiality, and intersubjective life. METHODS: We condu

Explicit and Implicit Self-esteem and Aggression: Differential Effects of Agency and Communion.

Previous work has shown that self-esteem is related to aggression and violence. However, self-esteem is a multidimensional construct, and so we isolated self-esteem related to agency (e.g., competence and assertiveness) and self-esteem related to communion (e.g., warmth and morality) using both explicit and implicit techniques and examined their relationship to two forms of aggression (proactive and reactive aggression) in two samples. In an undergraduate sample (N = 130), high levels of explicit agency were associated with increased aggression but only for those with low implicit agency. On t

Narcissism and Reactions to a Self-Esteem Insult: An Experiment Using Predictions from Self-Report and the Rorschach Task.

We used self-reported narcissistic grandiosity and vulnerability and a component derived from 11 potential grandiosity and narcissism variables (GNVs) coded from Rorschach behavior to predict fluctuations in self-esteem and their links to anger and defensive reactions. We assessed state mood, state self-esteem, and performance attributions in 105 college students who underwent a self-esteem manipulation involving success followed by failure on cognitive testing. Self-reported grandiosity predicted the disavowal of effortful ability as a factor in failure, but we did not replicate other previou
