Stimulation of the semicircular canals via the rotary chair as a means to test pharmacologic countermeasures for space motion sickness.

OBJECTIVE: Space motion sickness is currently treated pharmacologically with the empiric use of the H1 antihistamine promethazine, but use of this intervention is limited by the side effect of significant sedation. This creates a dilemma, as full cognition is particularly important during the same conditions likely to exacerbate the symptoms of space motion sickness. Using overstimulation of the semicircular canals with a rotary chair as a paradigm for space motion sickness, we evaluated four medications, commonly used for the treatment of terrestrial motion sickness and vertigo, for their eff…

Hearing Preservation After Segmental Semicircular Canal Destruction: A Report of Two Rare Cases.

Semicircular canal fistulas are a complication of cholesteatomatous otitis media. In extremely rare cases, extensive destruction of the bony labyrinth may result in loss of approximately one-third of the semicircular canal arc, often with wide exposure and partial injury to the membranous labyrinth, thereby increasing the risk of profound sensorineural hearing loss. Complete eradication of the cholesteatoma while preserving inner ear function remains challenging. Here, we report two rare cases of segmental loss of the semicircular canal arc in which useful hearing was retained. Case 1 involved

Double dehiscence (Superior semicircular canal and tegmen tympani) in the epicampaniform period (Arboli type).

PURPOSE: Although the superior semicircular canal dehiscence syndrome was described at the end of the 20th century, we want to check if it is a pathology that has existed since ancient times, through the anthropological study of bone remains. METHODS: We have carried out an anthropological and radiological study (CT scan) of 8 skulls found in caves, as secondary burials of the Arbolí type epicampaniform culture (1800 - 1700 BC) on the Iberian Peninsula. RESULTS: The 8 skulls (16 temporal bones) show a grade 4 degree of pneumatisation or hyperpneumatization. One of these skulls, belonging to

A new roll test to diagnose posterior semicircular canal benign paroxysmal positional vertigo.

BACKGROUND: The Dix-Hallpike (DH) test is a gold standard for diagnosing benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV). However, lateral semicircular canal BPPV is not rare. We have been performing the new roll test that begins from the sitting position and contains a head-hanging position, in order not to overlook lateral canal BPPV. We noticed that transient vertical/torsional nystagmus sometimes occurs during the new roll test. OBJECTIVE: To clarify the value of the new roll test in diagnosing posterior canal BPPV and elucidate the position that elicits nystagmus. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The

Resolution of atypical posterior semicircular canal BPPV: evidence for putative short-arm location.

This case demonstrates the successful identification and treatment of atypical posterior semicircular canal benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV) based on a unique presentation of positional nystagmus, the resultant nystagmus from repositioning manoeuvers, and restored function of the affected semicircular canal. This case illustrates the importance of completing a comprehensive clinical examination and the value for incorporating the video head impulse test as well as adjusting treatment based on testing and patient response when managing variant cases of BPPV.

Superior semicircular canal dehiscence and subsequent closure induces reversible impaired decision-making.

BACKGROUND: Vestibular loss and dysfunction has been associated with cognitive deficits, decreased spatial navigation, spatial memory, visuospatial ability, attention, executive function, and processing speed among others. Superior semicircular canal dehiscence (SSCD) is a vestibular-cochlear disorder in humans in which a pathological third mobile window of the otic capsule creates changes to the flow of sound pressure energy through the perilymph/endolymph. The primary symptoms include sound-induced dizziness/vertigo, inner ear conductive hearing loss, autophony, headaches, and visual problem

Bilateral Superior Semicircular Canal Dehiscence Concurrent With Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome: A Case Report.

Superior semicircular canal dehiscence (SSCD) is characterized by temporal bone thinning, which creates an opening between the inner ear and middle cranial fossa. Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, hypermobility type (EDS-HT) is a genetic collagen synthesis disorder, often resulting in bony abnormalities. We present the case of a 39-year-old female with EDS-HT who exhibited the otological symptoms characteristic of bilateral SSCD. High-resolution computed tomography (CT) scans confirmed the diagnosis. The patient elected for middle fossa craniotomy and noted symptomatic improvement. Due to its potential
