The calcium-sensitive receptor in the pathogenesis of sepsis.

Sepsis is an organ dysfunction caused by the body's dysfunctional response to infection, which is one of the most important causes of death in critically ill patients. It is characterized by high morbidity, high mortality, and high treatment costs. Currently, the treatment of sepsis relies mainly on supportive therapy, and there is a lack of targeted intervention ways. Studying the pathogenesis of sepsis and exploring new therapeutic targets are of great theoretical and clinical importance. Calcium-sensitive receptor (CaSR) is a cell membrane receptor belonging to the family of G protein-coupl

[Morphologic features of the chemosensory, visual and vestibular pathways of Helix lucorum].

The structure of chemosensory, visual and statocyst pathways of the snail Helix lucorum has been studied by means of five histological methods. The chemoreceptors of the optic tentacle bulb, small and large neurons of tentacle ganglion and bipolar cells of olfactory nerve send their processes to the CNS of the mollusc. In the CNS these processes divide into many clusters of branches. All protocerebral cells and the cluster of neurons of the commissural part of metacerebrum send their processes within the olfactory nerve towards the periphery. The axons of eye cells terminate in the enlargement

An intraoral thermoregulatory organ in the bowhead whale (Balaena mysticetus), the corpus cavernosum maxillaris.

The novel observation of a palatal retial organ in the bowhead whale (Balaena mysticetus) is reported, with characterization of its form and function. This bulbous ridge of highly vascularized tissue, here designated the corpus cavernosum maxillaris, runs along the center of the hard palate, expanding cranially to form two large lobes that terminate under the tip of the rostral palate, with another enlarged node at the caudal terminus. Gross anatomical and microscopic observation of tissue sections discloses a web-like internal mass with a large blood volume. Histological examination reveals l

Differences in sensory projections between macro- and microchaetes in Drosophilid flies.

From examination of the central axonal projections of sensory bristles on the notum of several species of Drosophilidae, we demonstrate different features that may indicate different functions for macro- and microchaetes. The large macrochaetes have conserved arborizations that correlate with their conserved position. Nevertheless, we find evidence for only two discrete projection patterns for bristles in the dorsocentral (DC) row, even when there may be four or five bristles present. We show that the small microchaetes of Drosophila melanogaster display regional specificity and subsets of con

Tasting arterial blood: what do the carotid chemoreceptors sense?

The carotid bodies are sensory organs that detect the chemical composition of the arterial blood. The carotid body sensory activity increases in response to arterial hypoxemia and the ensuing chemoreflex regulates vital homeostatic functions. Recent studies suggest that the carotid bodies might also sense arterial blood glucose and circulating insulin levels. This review focuses on how the carotid bodies sense O2, glucose, and insulin and some potential implications of these sensory functions on physiological regulation and in pathophysiological conditions. Emerging evidence suggests that carb

von Hippel-Lindau disease: a genetically transmitted multisystem neoplastic disorder.

von Hippel-Lindau disease is a rare hereditary disorder in which affected individuals are genetically predisposed to develop certain types of tumors and cysts in multiple organs. The most common manifestations are cerebellar, spinal and medullary hemangioblastomas, retinal angiomas, renal cell carcinomas, and pheochromocytomas. A lifelong diagnosis that requires intense follow-up for multiple and recurrent tumors, this disease can greatly impact a family's sense of emotional and physical well-being.

[Immunology and deafness. Manifestations of relapsing polychondritis in the ENT area. A case report].

Relapsing polychondritis is a rare episodic systemic disorder characterised by recurrent, widespread, and potentially destructive inflammatory lesions involving cartilaginous structures, the cardiovascular system, and organs of special sense, such as the eyes and ears. Although the aetiology is unknown and its pathogenesis is incompletely understood, experimental evidence strongly suggests that immunological mediated mechanisms are operative. The following case report adds some considerations to the discussion about the immunopathology of the inner ear.

Pregnancy-induced metabolic reprogramming and regenerative responses to pro-aging stresses.

Pregnancy is associated with physiological adaptations that affect virtually all organs, enabling the mother to support the growing fetus and placenta while withstanding the demands of pregnancy. As a result, mammalian pregnancy is a unique state that exerts paradoxical effects on maternal health. On one hand, the metabolic stress induced by pregnancy can accelerate aging and functional decline in organs. On the other hand, pregnancy activates metabolic programming and tissue regenerative responses that can reverse age-related impairments. In this sense, the oocyte-to-blastocyst transition is

Vestibular Organ Dissection and Whole-Mount Immunolabeling in Mouse.

The vestibular sensory apparatus contained in the inner ear is a marvelous evolutionary adaptation for sensing movement in 3 dimensions and is essential for an animal's sense of orientation in space, head movement, and balance. Damage to these systems through injury or disease can lead to vertigo, Meniere's disease, and other disorders that are profoundly debilitating. One challenge in studying vestibular organs is their location within the boney inner ear and their small size, especially in mice, which have become an advantageous mammalian model. This protocol describes the dissection procedu

Neuroplastic changes in functional wiring in sensory cortices of the congenitally deaf: A network analysis.

Congenital sensory deprivation induces significant changes in the structural and functional organisation of the brain. These are well-characterised by cross-modal plasticity, in which deprived cortical areas are recruited to process information from non-affected sensory modalities, as well as by other neuroplastic alterations within regions dedicated to the remaining senses. Here, we analysed visual and auditory networks of congenitally deaf and hearing individuals during different visual tasks to assess changes in network community structure and connectivity patterns due to congenital deafnes

Reduced Cortico-Cortical Resting-State Connectivity in Sensory Systems Related to Bodily Pain in Juvenile Fibromyalgia.

OBJECTIVE: Juvenile-onset fibromyalgia (JFM) is a paradigmatic chronic pain condition for which the underlying neurobiological substrates are poorly understood. This study examined, for the first time, data-driven resting-state functional connectivity (rsFC) alterations in 37 female adolescents with JFM compared with 43 healthy female adolescents and identified associations with bodily pain. METHODS: Whole-brain voxel-wise rsFC alterations were assessed using the intrinsic connectivity contrast, a measure of node centrality at each voxel, and seed-based analyses for interpretability. We studi

Vitamin A deficiency and sensory function.

Morphological investigation of tongue, olfactory epithelia, trachea and inner ear in vitamin A deficiency are reported. The results support assumptions concerning the loss of sensory function as been at least a secondary effect of alterations of the neighbourhood of the sensory cells caused by vitamin A deficiency. Taste buds are hindered in function by a dense layer of squamous cells and olfaction is decreased by atrophy of the surrounding respiratory epithelium. Inner ear functionality seems to be affected by vitamin A status via a stabilizing effect on the endolymph-perilymph barrier.

A horseradish peroxidase procedure for tracing the central projections of peripheral nerves in exsanguinated anamniotes.

This report outlines a procedure for demonstrating the central connections of peripheral nerves in anamniotes by exposing the nerves to horseradish peroxidase (HRP) subsequent to perfusion of the animal with cold saline. The tissue is fixed by immersion after a 6-10 h exposure to the HRP, embedded, sectioned and finally reacted using tetramethylbenzidine as a chromogen. The pattern of afferent projections of the posterior lateral line nerve in the teleost fish Crenicichla as demonstrated by this 'pre-perfused' technique is very similar to the pattern seen when using a standard HRP procedure re

Feedforward attentional selection in sensory cortex.

Salient objects grab attention because they stand out from their surroundings. Whether this phenomenon is accomplished by bottom-up sensory processing or requires top-down guidance is debated. We tested these alternative hypotheses by measuring how early and in which cortical layer(s) neural spiking distinguished a target from a distractor. We measured synaptic and spiking activity across cortical columns in mid-level area V4 of male macaque monkeys performing visual search for a color singleton. A neural signature of attentional capture was observed in the earliest response in the input layer

Homeotic genes have specific functional roles in the establishment of the Drosophila embryonic peripheral nervous system.

The Drosophila embryonic peripheral nervous system (PNS) contains segment-specific spatial patterns of sensory organs which derive from the ectoderm. Many studies have established that the homeotic genes of Drosophila control segment specific characteristics of the epidermis, and more recently these genes have also been shown to control gut morphogenesis through their expression in the visceral mesoderm (Tremml, G. and Bienz, M. (1989), EMBO J. 8, 2677-2685). We report here the roles of homeotic genes in establishing the spatial patterns of sensory organs in the embryonic PNS. The PNS was exam

[Topography of the ampulla of Lorenzini system of Raja clavata and its role in electroorientation].

A detailed scheme is presented of the peripheral region of electroreceptive system of Raja clavata. These morphological data are used to calculate the overall energetic directional diagram (DD), i. e. response of the ampullary apparatus to the direction of uniform electric field strength vector. The calculations show that the overall DD of two major ampullar groups has a circular appearance. The experimentally obtained thresholds to electric stimulations determined from recordings of the vegetative reaction (respiratory reflex) are also circular. The data obtained allow suggesting that Raja cl

[Relapsing polychondritis. Apropos a case].

Relapsing polychondritis is a rare disease of undetermined cause. The most frequently seen symptom is redness and swelling of cartilaginous ear, followed by cartilage inflammation elsewhere in the body and inflammation of special sense organs. This report describes recurrent attacks of relapsing polychondritis in one patient, who responded to low doses of corticosteroid therapy. The great relevance of cutaneous vasculitis in our patient, lead us to suggest that PR may fall in to the spectrum of systemic vasculitis.
