Vagal sensory pathway for the gut-brain communication.

The communication between the gut and brain is crucial for regulating various essential physiological functions, such as energy balance, fluid homeostasis, immune response, and emotion. The vagal sensory pathway plays an indispensable role in connecting the gut to the brain. Recently, our knowledge of the vagal gut-brain axis has significantly advanced through molecular genetic studies, revealing a diverse range of vagal sensory cell types with distinct peripheral innervations, response profiles, and physiological functions. Here, we review the current understanding of how vagal sensory neuron

Pathogen recognition by sensory neurons: hypotheses on the specificity of sensory neuron signaling.

Sensory neurons cooperate with barrier tissues and resident immune cells to form a significant aspect of defensive strategies in concert with the immune system. This assembly of neuroimmune cellular units is exemplified across evolution from early metazoans to mammalian life. As such, sensory neurons possess the capability to detect pathogenic infiltrates at barrier surfaces. This capacity relies on mechanisms that unleash specific cell signaling, trafficking and defensive reflexes. These pathways exploit mechanisms to amplify and enhance the alerting response should pathogenic infiltration se

A neural progenitor mitotic wave is required for asynchronous axon outgrowth and morphology.

Spatiotemporal mechanisms generating neural diversity are fundamental for understanding neural processes. Here, we investigated how neural diversity arises from neurons coming from identical progenitors. In the dorsal thorax of Drosophila, rows of mechanosensory organs originate from the division of sensory organ progenitor (SOPs). We show that in each row of the notum, an anteromedial located central SOP divides first, then neighbouring SOPs divide, and so on. This centrifugal wave of mitoses depends on cell-cell inhibitory interactions mediated by SOP cytoplasmic protrusions and Scabrous, a

Infectious and Inflammatory Pathways to Cough.

Coughing is a dynamic physiological process resulting from input of vagal sensory neurons innervating the airways and perceived airway irritation. Although cough serves to protect and clear the airways, it can also be exploited by respiratory pathogens to facilitate disease transmission. Microbial components or infection-induced inflammatory mediators can directly interact with sensory nerve receptors to induce a cough response. Analysis of cough-generated aerosols and transmission studies have further demonstrated how infectious disease is spread through coughing. This review summarizes the n

Redundant neural circuits regulate olfactory integration.

Olfactory integration is important for survival in a natural habitat. However, how the nervous system processes signals of two odorants present simultaneously to generate a coherent behavioral response is poorly understood. Here, we characterize circuit basis for a form of olfactory integration in Caenorhabditis elegans. We find that the presence of a repulsive odorant, 2-nonanone, that signals threat strongly blocks the attraction of other odorants, such as isoamyl alcohol (IAA) or benzaldehyde, that signal food. Using a forward genetic screen, we found that genes known to regulate the struct

On the morphology of antennular sensory and attachment organs in cypris larvae of the deep-sea vent/seep barnacles, Ashinkailepas and Neoverruca.

Barnacle cypris larvae show high morphological variation in the organs used in search of and attaching to a substratum. This variation may represent adaptation to the habitat of the species. Here, we studied SEM level morphologies of cypris antennular sensory and attachment organs in a deep-sea vent endemic species (Neoverruca sp.) and a vent/seep inhabiting species (Ashinkailepas seepiophila). We compare them with three species from other environments. The antennular morphologies of Neoverruca sp. and A. seepiophila were similar, which is consistent with recent molecular studies showing a clo

Rapidly adapting receptors in acute heart failure and their impact on dyspnea.

Acute heart failure is associated with dyspnea that is usually defined as difficulty in breathing that is accompanied by an element of distress. It is commonly associated with an increase in the rate of ventilation, wheezing, an increase in airway secretions and cough. This review examines the reflexes which generate these responses with particular reference to the role of rapidly adapting receptors (RAR) in the airways. The essential feature of acute heart failure is an increase in pulmonary extravascular fluid volume. Small acute increases in extravascular fluid volume in the airways activat

The uroepithelial-associated sensory web.

An important, but not well understood, function of epithelial cells is their ability to sense changes in their extracellular environment and then communicate these changes to the underlying nervous, connective, and muscular tissues. This communication is likely to be important for tube- and sac-shaped organs such as blood vessels, the lungs, the gut, and the bladder, whose normal function can be modulated by stimuli initiated within the epithelium. We propose that the uroepithelium, which lines the renal pelvis, ureters, and inner surface of the bladder, functions as an integral part of a 'sen

The immunopathology of olfactory nerve injury and hemorrhage in gerbils.

Patients with head injury may experience olfactory dysfunction. Unfortunately, little is known about changes in the olfactory neuroepithelium caused by intracranial olfactory nerve injury and hemorrhage. We performed olfactory nerve section or bulbectomy in 53 Mongolian gerbils and subjected the olfactory neuroepithelium to immunohistochemical analysis. A decrease or disappearance of the antiserum to an olfactory marker protein containing olfactory receptor neurons was evident in the sectioned group. Degeneration of the olfactory neuroepithelium contralateral to olfactory nerve injury was also

Carotid body chemoceptors: physiological role in buffering fall in blood pressure during sleep.

In cats whose aortic nerves were severed subsequent deafferentation of the carotid body chemoceptors (the carotid sinus baroceptors remaining intact) did not change arterial pressure during wakefulness or light sleep, but the falls in pressure during deep sleep were markedly exaggerated. Subsequent baroceptive denervation did not modify the hypotensive effect.

Distribution and possible function of transient receptor potential melastatin-7 in the rat cranial sensory ganglia.

The distribution of transient receptor potential melastatin 7 (TRPM7) was investigated in the trigeminal (TG), petrosal (PG), jugular (JG), and nodose ganglia (NG) in a rat model. Approximately half of the sensory neurons contained TRPM7-immunoreactivity in the TG, PG, JG, and NG. TRPM7-immunoreactive (-IR) sensory neurons had small- to medium-sized cell bodies. Triple immunofluorescence analysis revealed that TRPM7-IR sensory neurons showed mainly transient receptor potential vanilloid 1 (TRPV1) immunoreactivity, whereas less than 10% of TRPM7-IR neurons contained TRPV2-immunoreactivity. In t

Age- and size-related changes in the inner ear and hearing ability of the adult zebrafish (Danio rerio).

Fishes, unlike most other vertebrate groups, continue to add sensory hair cells to their ears for much of their lives. However, it is not clear whether the addition ever stops or how the addition of sensory cells impacts hearing ability. In this article, we tested both questions using the zebrafish, Danio rerio. Our results not only have important implications for understanding the consequences of adding sensory receptors, but these results for normal zebrafish also serve as valuable baseline information for future studies of select mutations on the ear and hearing of this species. Our results
