Methods to inform psychiatric nosology: Commentary on Fisher (2026).

An empirically derived system for classifying psychopathology has long been a goal in psychiatric research. The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) has been criticized for high comorbidity and heterogeneous symptom presentations among DSM diagnoses. Competing alternative models include the Hierarchical Taxonomy of Psychopathology, a quantitative, dimensional alternative, and network theories, which conceptualize mental disorders as emergent from dynamic interactions of symptoms and mechanisms. Fisher (see record 2026-72441-001) introduced a set-theoretic framework to id

Reasons for holding a Consensus Conference on neuropsychological rehabilitation in adult patients.

Neuropsychological deficits are common in various cerebrovascular, neurodegenerative and traumatic pathologies. Neuropsychological rehabilitation refers to a set of interventions that aim to improve a person's ability to perform cognitive tasks by retraining previously learned skills and teaching compensatory strategies. However, today there are some relevant points that need of further investigations. In 2007, a Task Force was set up under the auspices of several scientific societies that operate in the field of psychology, neuropsychology, rehabilitation and neurology (AIP, GIRN, SIMFER, SIN

Understanding consumers' adoption of new energy vehicles in the transition to sustainable transportation.

The advent of new energy vehicles (NEVs) presents hopeful pathways to alleviate the strain caused by fossil fuel consumption and environmental deterioration. However, the widespread adoption of NEVs remains a challenge. Current research on the adoption of NEVs tends to concentrate on factors like consumer psychology and vehicle performance while neglecting the role of cultural values and purchase costs in consumers’ decision-making process. Therefore, this study innovatively integrates uncertainty avoidance and price awareness into the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) and explores the moderat

Neurodevelopmental benefits of judo training in preschool children: a multinational, mixed methods follow-up study.

INTRODUCTION: In our quasi-experimental study, we evaluated the neurodevelopmental impact of judo on young children (n = 182) aged 4-7 years, specifically focusing on primitive reflex integration. Participants were divided into judo and non-judo control groups, and assessments were conducted over 6 months across Hungary, Slovakia, and Austria. METHODS: Neurodevelopmental changes were measured using Institute for Neuro-Physiological Psychology (INPP) and Physical and Neurological Examination for Soft Signs (PANESS) for children, while parents completed the Performance Skills Questionnaire (PSQ

Introduction to the special issue in honor of the life and work of Dr. Nancy Petry.

This special issue of Psychology of Addictive Behaviors honors the life and work of a beloved friend, colleague, and mentor, Dr. Nancy M. Petry, who died on July 17, 2018 of breast cancer. At the time of her death, Dr. Petry was the editor of this journal. We were gratified to receive many submissions for this issue, resulting in an outstanding set of 24 selected articles. These articles span the multiple areas of addiction research to which Dr. Petry made key contributions, and this introduction highlights her work in these areas. The topic areas in this issue include behavior analysis and be

Clinical dysfunction and psychosocial interventions: the interplay of research, methods, and conceptualization of challenges.

I describe the development and course of my research in studying clinical dysfunction among children, adolescents, and adults. This is an autobiographical account that highlights programs of research, career moves, and experiences along the way that were particularly influential. Research on specific topics and the methods to study them were inherently fascinating but invariably led me to broader issues well beyond what I was studying. The research alerted me to how and why current methods, assumptions, and research practices might be constraining and perhaps slightly misguided. My research an

Novel mixed-method, inclusive protocol involving global key stakeholders, including carers as experts, to co-develop relevant Caregiver-Reported Outcome Domains (CRODs) in skin disease.

INTRODUCTION: Ichthyoses comprise a heterogenous group of rare genetic skin disorders that involves the entire skin surface, often with additional syndromic features, and pose many clinical challenges. Without curative intervention, the mainstay of life-long symptom management is supportive in nature and can remain the responsibility of the caregiver. Although impact on the wider family is considered an important outcome of policies and services, there is a lack of caregiver consensus on what outcome domains to measure to fully assess the impact of ichthyosis on the patient and the caregiver.

The Neurocognitive Bases of Human Volition.

Volition refers to a capacity for endogenous action, particularly goal-directed endogenous action, shared by humans and some other animals. It has long been controversial whether a specific set of cognitive processes for volition exist in the human brain, and much scientific thinking on the topic continues to revolve around traditional metaphysical debates about free will. At its origins, scientific psychology had a strong engagement with volition. This was followed by a period of disenchantment, or even outright hostility, during the second half of the twentieth century. In this review, I aim

Trauma exposure, posttraumatic stress disorder and problem drinking in sexual assault survivors.

OBJECTIVE: Sexual assault history is associated with higher risk of problem drinking in women, yet little is known about mechanisms linking trauma histories to women's problem drinking. This study examined how trauma histories, alcohol-related cognitive mediators and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) relate to past-year problem drinking in adult female sexual assault survivors. METHOD: Data from self-report questionnaires completed by a large, diverse sample (N = 865) of community-residing women who had experienced adult sexual assault were analyzed. Structural equation modeling was used t

Visual expectation and dimensions of infant information processing.

Visual expectation was assessed in 103 black 6.5-month-olds using Haith, Hazan, and Goodman's paradigm and related to performance on standard developmental assessments and tests of information processing skill. As expected, percent anticipations was higher and RT lower than in 3.0-month-olds previously tested. Split-half and left-right correlations for the RT measures were moderate and similar to those previously reported, as was split-half reliability for percent anticipations. The 2 RT measures were related to fixation duration on both visual recognition memory (VRM) and cross-modal transfer

Conceptualization and validation of the TILT questionnaire: relationship with IGD and life satisfaction.

Currently, the study of esports is growing within the field of psychology. Among the different variables attracting interest - including stress or psychological factors associated with performance - an emerging concept known as tilt is gaining prominence in the literature. However, this construct has yet to be operationalized or defined. Thus, the present study aims to address this gap by defining and conceptualizing TILT while devising and validating a questionnaire to measure the construct in esports players. The initial phase of the study comprised 27 interviews conducted with professional

Disgust and fear-related UCS-expectancy bias in blood-fearful individuals.

People with specific fears tend to overestimate the occurrence of unpleasant consequences in situations involving their feared objects. Such expectancy bias logically acts in a way to confirm phobic fear and avoidance. Increasing evidence suggests that blood phobia is qualitatively different from other specific phobias. Confrontation with phobic stimuli gives rise to disgust and repulsion rather than (threat-induced) fear. Therefore, this study examined the role of disgust-related UCS expectancies following confrontation with blood phobia-relevant stimuli. Using a thought-experiment procedure,

Slow eye movements and subjective estimates of sleepiness predict EEG power changes during sleep deprivation.

RATIONALE: The aim of the present study was to assess, intraindividually, the relationship among slow eye movements, electroencephalogram (EEG) power, and subjective measures of sleepiness during a 40-hour sleep deprivation comparing 2 experimental conditions: eyes-open and eyes-closed. METHODS: Nineteen normal subjects participated in a sleep-deprivation protocol with recordings of the waking Cz-A1-2 EEG in 36 sessions at 1-hour intervals starting at 10:00 AM. Each session consisted of a 2-minute eyes-closed period, followed by a 4-minute eyes-open period. Electrooculogram, self-ratings (Kar

A test of the hopelessness theory of depression in unemployed young adults.

Recent research has failed to support the prediction based on hopelessness theory that hopelessness mediates the full relationship between attributional style for negative outcomes and depression. A re-examination of hopelessness theory, however, provides the hypothesis that a measure of hopelessness containing items directly relevant to an ongoing negative life-event will mediate the full relationship between attributional style for negative outcomes and depression. Hopelessness theory was extended with a second hypothesis that attributional style for positive outcomes is involved in the aeti

Students' expectations about peer pressure to engage in misconduct.

Previous research suggests that students with learning disabilities may differ from other students in their expectations of how peers are likely to propose engaging in misconduct. This study followed up on these findings using a methodology that did not require the participants to produce their responses verbally. Participants were 74 students with learning disabilities (53 male, 21 female) and 85 students without disabilities (40 male, 45 female) from high schools in three types of communities (urban, primarily black; urban, primarily Hispanic; suburban, primarily white). The students were pr

Modifying and developing health behavior.

The literatures on both behavior modification and behavioral development have engendered innovations in public health programs, addressing problems of patient adherance to preventive and therapeutic regimens, delay in seeking diagnosis of illness symptoms, risk-taking behavior, and other aspects of lifestyle associated with health. Because most of this literature derives from psychology, there has been a distinct bias in the construction of interventions, pointing them directly at individuals, usually in a counseling or small group mode of delivery. These developments served public health well

Being bad isn't always good: affective context moderates the attention bias toward negative information.

Research has demonstrated that people automatically devote more attention to negative information than to positive information. The authors conducted 3 experiments to test whether this bias is attenuated by a person's affective context. Specifically, the authors primed participants with positive and negative information using traditional (e.g., subliminal semantic priming) and nontraditional (e.g., social interactions) means and measured the amount of attention they allocated to positive and negative information. With both event-related brain potentials (Experiment 1) and the Stroop task (Expe

Exploring the experiences of diagnostic radiographers in trauma radiography in Zambia: Insights from a low-resource setting.

INTRODUCTION: Trauma is a major global cause of morbidity and mortality, with general radiography serving as the first-line diagnostic tool in emergency care. In Zambia, trauma accounts for approximately 20% of premature deaths, largely from road traffic accidents, falls, and assaults, with Lusaka Province reporting the highest incidence. Radiographers are essential in trauma care; however, their experiences in low-resource settings remain underexplored. This study explored diagnostic radiographers' experiences of trauma radiography at a Zambian teaching hospital. METHODS: Following ethical a

Associations between neural correlates of visual stimulus processing and set-shifting in ill and recovered women with anorexia nervosa.

Women ill with anorexia nervosa (AN) have been shown to exhibit altered cognitive functioning, particularly poor set-shifting (SS). In this study, we investigated whether brain activation in frontal and parietal regions during visual stimulus processing correlates with SS ability. Women currently ill with AN (AN; N=14), recovered women (REC; N=14) and healthy controls (HC; N=15), viewed alternating blocks of food and non-food pictures during functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). The Berg's Card Sorting Task was completed outside the scanner to measure SS. A priori regions of interest (

The coupling between spatial attention and other components of task-set: A task-switching investigation.

Is spatial attention reconfigured independently of, or in tandem with, other task-set components when the task changes? We tracked the eyes of participants cued to perform one of three digit-classification tasks, each consistently associated with a distinct location. Previously we observed, on task switch trials, a substantial delay in orientation to the task-relevant location and tendency to fixate the location of the previously relevant task-"attentional inertia". In the present experiments the cues specified (and instructions emphasized) the relevant location rather than the current task. I
