Comparison of bacterial translocation during traumatic shock and hemorrhagic shock in rats.

UNLABELLED: Traumatic shock has been classified as a kind of hypovolemic shock similar to hemorrhagic shock. Since bacterial translocation has been observed in shock, this study investigated the difference in bacterial translocation during traumatic shock and hemorrhagic shock, and considered this effect on lung injury during sepsis. METHODS: Forty-eight male or female Sprague-Dawley rats were divided into 2 groups, hemorrhagic shock and traumatic shock. Bacterial translocation, endotoxin, and blood gas were evaluated. Alterations of the lungs morphologically and functionally were observed.

CT hypotension complex (shock bowel) is not always due to traumatic hypovolemic shock.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of our study was to review the clinical and CT findings in a substantial series of 41 patients with the shock bowel sign to determine if there is an association between shock bowel (and other CT signs of hypotension) and conditions other than post-traumatic hypovolemic shock. CONCLUSION: The shock bowel sign and the CT hypotension complex are frequently associated with hypotension from causes other than trauma-induced hypovolemic shock, such as severe head or spine injury, cardiac arrest, septic shock, bacterial endocarditis, and diabetic ketoacidosis. Other elements of

Hemostatic resuscitation in traumatic hemorrhagic shock: case report.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: The aim of this paper is to report a case in which the damage control resuscitation (DCR) approach was successfully used to promote hemostatic resuscitation in a polytraumatized patient with severe hemorrhagic shock. CASE REPORT: Female patient, 32 years of age, with severe hemorrhagic shock due to polytrauma with hip fracture, who developed acidosis, coagulopathy, and hypothermia. During fluid resuscitation, the patient received blood products transfusion of fresh frozen plasma/packed red blood cells/platelet concentrate at a ratio of 1:1:1 and evolved intraoperati

Antibiotic pharmacokinetics following fluid resuscitation from traumatic shock.

OBJECTIVE: To describe the pharmacokinetic profile of aztreonam and vancomycin hydrochloride in a clinically relevant experimental model of hemorrhagic shock and trauma. METHODS: Ten mongrel pigs (mean +/- SD weight, 26.7 +/- 6.4 kg) were anesthetized with fentanyl citrate and ventilated, and an indwelling catheter was placed in the jugular vein. On day 3, all pigs were subjected to fentanyl administration, ventilation, soft-tissue injury, and an arterial hemorrhage (mean +/- SD, 40% +/- 8%). After a 1-hour shock period, baseline hemodynamics were restored by reinfusing shed blood plus twice

Salutary effects of anisodamine in murine traumatic shock.

Anisodamine, an alkaloid originally extracted from the Chinese herb Anisodus tanguticus, has been reported to possess beneficial actions in septic, superior mesenteric artery occlusion, and hemorrhagic shock. We have investigated its actions in traumatic shock in rats. Anisodamine (2.5 mg/kg) increased survival time from 1.4 +/- 0.2 h to 3.1 +/- 0.3 h (P less than 0.001) in traumatized rats with 50% of the drug-treated animals surviving at least 3.5 h. Drug treatment had no significant effect on plasma cathepsin D activity (12.0 +/- 2.3 vs 10.4 +/- 1.7; vehicle- vs drug-treated, respectively).

[Pathologic anatomy of traumatic shock during peace time].

The study on the morphology of organs in 316 fatalities due to traumatic shock and blood loss and organs of 120 dogs and 25 rats sacrificed after reproduction of closed trauma of the chest accompanied by blood loss revealed the dependence of morphological changes on the time of shock development and the size of blood loss. Soon after trauma, disorders in the permeability of the capillary basal membrane are found against the background of massive blood loss. Disorders in hemodynamics progress during the first 24 hours when first signs of necrobiosis of the parenchymatous organs begin to appear.

Protective actions of aprotinin in acute traumatic shock.

The effect of the protease inhibitor, aprotinin, was examined in rats during traumatic shock. In sham-operated control rats, intravenous administration of aprotinin (20,000 or 40,000 KIU/kg) showed no immediate changes in the mean arterial blood pressure and heart rate. In rats subjected to Noble-Collip drum trauma, aprotinin at a dose of 20,000 KIU/kg prolonged survival time to 2.1 +/- 0.3 hr (p less than 0.05) and 40,000 KIU/kg prolonged the survival time of rats to a greater extent (3.1 +/- 0.4 hr, p less than 0.001) compared to rats given only its vehicle (1.1 +/- 0.2 hr, mean +/- SE).
