PURPOSE: Juvenile recurrent parotitis (JRP) is characterized by intermittent swelling of one or both parotid glands simultaneously or on different occasions. The peak incidence of JRP is between the ages of 3 and 6 years, with predominance among males. The etiology and mechanism are still unknown. The diagnosis is made on a clinical basis and is confirmed by ultrasonography or sialography. Our objective was to present our long-term experience with endoscopic diagnosis and treatment of JRP.

The results achieved by experimental microsurgical suturing of salivary ducts in dogs are presented. Nine partial lesions and one complete transection of the ducts were made on parotid and submandibular ducts. Four to seven interrupted microsutures were used for each lesion. Non-neoplastic disorders of the parotid gland like chronic recurrent parotitis, asymptomatic gland enlargement or salivary fistulae present a therapeutic problem. Surgical removal of the gland is often difficult as scar tissue may be present in these benign diseases. Therefore alternative methods are suggested to eliminate parenchyma by inducing atrophy. Salivary isoamylase values in sera were evaluated before and after sialography in 14 patients with Sjögren's syndrome (SS) and were compared with those in non-SS patients. Non-SS patients consisted of cases of systemic lupus erythematosus, rheumatoid arthritis and ulcerative colitis. We compared two digital-image feature-extraction methods for the analysis of microsialograms of the mouse parotid gland following either overfilling, experimentally induced acute sialoadenitis or irradiation. Salivary gland diseases are very common disorders and require radiologic evaluation. Several radiologic methods are used for assessment of these diseases.
